    I. Introduction to WHO andWHO WPRO

    The World Health Organizationwww.who.int is a specialized agencyof the United Nations with the globalhealth mission to support allcountries and peoples in their questto achieve the highest attainablelevel of health, defined in the WHOConstitution as "a state of completephysical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence ofdisease or infirmity."

    II. Development of WPRIM(a video presentation)

    What is WPRIM?The Western Pacific Region Index Medicus

    (WPRIM) is a joint project of WHO and theMember States of the Region.

    Goal:To create an online index of medical and

    health journals published in Member States ofthe WHO Western Pacific Region, which can beaccessed on the Internet thus ensuring globalaccessibility of medical and health research donein the Region.

    WPRIM and the Global HealthLibrary (GHL) The Global Health Library or GHL is an

    initiative of WHO in cooperation with theWHO Regional Offices. It aims to extendto all the benefits of knowledge that isessential to the fullest attainment ofhealth.

    WPRIM is searchable along with the otherindex medici of other WHO regions underthe GHL platform.

    Access to reliable health information

    GHL aims to strengthen, promote and develop worldwide networkson the collection, organization, dissemination and un iversal access toreliable health sciences information.

    be regularly published (at least 2 issues per year). However, ifthe journal is published only once a year, it will encouraged toincrease its frequency to at least two issues per year: and

    include "Instructions to Authors" reviewed and accepted by

    the National Journal Selection Committees.

    How journals for WPRIM are chosen?

    Note:

    The Country NJSC may decide to add country-specific criteria to theminimum journal selection criteria stated above.

    For example, the registration of clinical trials as a scientific and ethicalresponsibility.

    The following journal selection criteria were finalized and approved byrepresentatives of the National Journal Selection Committees (NJSC) ata Consultation held in Tokyo, Japan on 17-18 May 2007

    There are now 473 journal titles accepted inWPRIM from 11 contributing countries +1 journal published by WPRO as of August 2011

    IV. APAME, WPRIM and theLibrarians

    WPRIM and the Asia Pacific Associationof Medical Journal Editors (APAME) The Asia Pacific Association of Medical Journal Editors

    (APAME) was established during one of the meetings ofWPRIM in Seoul, Republic of Korea in 2007.

    APAME and WPRIM share the common goal of helping raise

    the level of journal publishing and promoting equitable accessto quality health research done in the Region.

    The vision of APAME is to promote health care through thedissemination of high quality knowledge and information onmedicine in the Asia Pacific Region

    Objectives of APAME1. To encourage collaboration and facilitate communication

    among medical journal editors in the Region and globally;

    2. To improve editorial standards and promote professionalismin medical editing and publishing through education, self-assessment, and self-governance;

    3. To facilitate research writing and peer-review processthrough training workshops, seminars and other activities;and

    4. To foster the continuing education of medical journaleditors, reviewers, editorial staff, publishers and librariansin the Region.

    APAME and the Philippine Association ofMedical Journal Editors (PAMJE)

    Article IV: Mission and ObjectivesThe mission of PAMJE is to contribute to the

    improvement of health in the Philippines and the AsiaPacific Region by ensuring the quality and disseminationof health-related information published in medicaljournals, utilized for the purposes of better decision-making and effective delivery of health services.

    PAMJE was established on May 5, 2011 at the ExecutiveLounge of the Department of Science and Technology

    APAME and the Philippine Association ofMedical Journal Editors (PAMJE)The objectives are to:

    (1) encourage collaboration and facilitate communication amongmedical and health journal editors in the Philippines and the AsiaPacific Region;(2) improve editorial standards and promote professionalism inmedical editing through education, self-assessment, and self-governance;(3) facilitate scholarly research writing and peer-reviewprocesses through training workshops, seminars and otheractivities; and(4) foster the continuing education of medical and health journaleditors, reviewers, editorial staff, publishers and librarians inthe country.

    Editors, previous editors, editorial staff, editorial assistantsand reviewers of peer-reviewed medical and health-related

    journals and those working in any branch of health-relatedscientific and technology communication in the Philippines, intheir capacity as Editor-In-Chief, Deputy, Associate,Assistant, Supplement and Managing Editors, other EditorialStaff, Reviewers, Librarians or Scientists and Technologists,are eligible for individual membership.

    There are two categories of individual membership- regular,and associate.

    APAME and the Philippine Association ofMedical Journal Editors (PAMJE)Regular membersEditors, previous editors and editorial staff of peer-reviewed medical and health-related journals and those working in editorial capacities in any branch of health-related scientific and technology communication in the Philippines, in their capacityas Editor-In-Chief, Deputy, Associate, Assistant, Supplement and ManagingEditors and other Editorial Staff, are eligible for Regular membership. Regularmembers may vote, hold office and serve on committees.

    Associate membersReviewers of peer-reviewed medical and health-related journals and those workingin any branch of health-related scientific and technology communication in the

    Philippines, in other capacities as Reviewers, Librarians or Scientists andTechnologists, are eligible for Associate membership. Associate members shallenjoy all the rights and privileges of a regular member except the rights to vote andto hold office.

    Singapore Declaration on Equitable AccessHealth Information in the Western PacificRegion

    The Singapore Declaration on equitable access to healthinformation in the Western Pacific Region was launched atthe International Forum on Academic Medical Publishingheld in conjunction with the Singapore Medical JournalGolden Jubilee Conference on November 6, 2009 inSingapore.

    Role of Librarians in the development ofWPRIM Knowledge sharing and capacity building

    Networking among librarians in the WPRmember countries to facilitate knowledgesharing experiences and skills

    Agree on standards used to index journals

    Train library users on the proper use of thedatabase (search techniques, etc.)

    Train staff on the management of the database(encoding, uploading, etc.)

    Role of Librarians in the development ofWPRIM Advocacy

    Promote the use and accessibility of librarydatabases

    Provide lectures and presentations tocolleagues, librarians, researchers,administrators in countries.
