The Brief

Manage, art direct, design and layout the 2011 Interdisciplinary Art & Design graduating students’ yearbook, from concept to print. The yearbook will total 60 pages and will showcase each individuals work on their own dedicated double page spread.

A collaborative project with Luke Hallam and Adam Townend.

Concept

The yearbook is a way for graduating students to showcase their work to other professionals. As such, the design and layout should allow the focus to rest firmly on the work itself. The yearbook should also provide examples of students work in a professional environment. The cover is a typographic installation, built to represent the craft and hard work each student has put in, and the range of disciplines they practice, providing a focal point for not just the yearbook but also the end of year show.

Cover

The cover is a wide angle shot of a 6ft x 10ft typographic installation of the theme of the yearbook chosen by the graduating class. It is a full wrap around cover and we made a decision fairly early on to not include any other type on the cover to keep it bold and simple. The installation was built by the students and shot in their studio, directed by our yearbook team.

Development & Collaborative Practice

There were many ideas and design directions discussed during the development of the yearbook layout. As a team we met every other day to discuss the work we had done and work out which direction we would head next. This meant that our design plans were more considered and effective, having the combined collaboration of three designers, helping the project to move along and develop in a way that could not be achieved separately.

Group meetings and discussions played a massive part in informing the end result along with regular weekly meetings with the course team and student representatives.

Layout

With a 60 page yearbook and 18 students, each was afforded their own double page spread to display their work in. The yearbook is symmetrical in page layout, with a central trio of spreads dedicated to the students work that already exists in the public domain, with 9 students in either half. There are coloured quotes pages that serve as a break between the student profiles, coming after the first 5 profiles, then book ending the central work in public spreads, then reflected in the back half splitting the profiles into 4 & 5.

Specs

With a small print run we were afforded the possibility within our budget for extra print finishes. However, after discussions with the client we decided we would not apply any unless it was necessary and that the cover image would speak for itself.

Working on a square format we worked with a 12 column grid with a 10mm margin and 4mm gutter, which afforded us the flexibility we would need to work with a range of work.

Delivery & Roles

The spreads adhere to the agreed 12x12 grid format, but within this we wanted to provide even more structure while not making every page look the same. For this I developed the idea of ‘page elements’, where each image and each profile block would be structured forms that can be transferable round the page. This means there is a continuity to the pages as the profile sections are the same format, but an added fluidity as the are arranged in different positions within the page.

My primary roles within the team were as concept developer, layout coordinator and liason with the client and our team.

As a team we each took responsibility at various points to work on sections that we would then bring together and develop into a final product.
