Brief Industrial Profile of Nadia District
3
(WEST BENGAL)
1. General Characteristics of the District:
The name of Nadia is derived from Nabadwip. Some experts opined that the name of Nabadwip is derived from Nine is land i.e. I) Antadwwip ii) Simantadwip iii) Gourunomdwip vi) Madhyadwip v) Koledwip vi) Ritudwip vii) Madodrumdwip viii) Jagrudwip and ix) Rudradwip.
According to Narchari-a renowned author of Baishnav literature there is no separate village named Nadia. Nabadwip is surrounded by nine islands which are separated from each other but called one village. The Administrative Hqtrs. Continued to be at Kirishnagar from the period of British Ruler since 1772. The district is covered under Presidency Division and occupies 11th position in the State in respect of its size with an area of 3927 sq. km. It lies in the heart of Bengal Delta held within the arms of Ganga and Bhagirathi on the west and Mathabhanga on the North. The shape of the district is irregular lying north to south.
1.1 Location & Geographical Area.
The district lies between 22 53’ and 24 11’ north latitude and between 88
09’ and 88 48’ east longitude.
.
1.2 Topography
The soil of Nadia district is classified as Gangetic alluvium and is light texture in nature. Mostly the soil is a mixture of silt and sand and does not possess much moisture retaining capacity. However, in Ranaghat Sub- Division the soil characteristics are different. The soil here is composed of clay loam and in places, the surface soil has hardened into stiff black clay. Soil reaction varies around neutral from mildly acid to mildly alkaline and crops give good response to NPK fertilizers. The physiography of the district is mostly plain. There are pockets of mild slopes here and there. The whole district is a network of number of rivers and srteams. The principal rivers of the district are Bhagirathi, Jalangi, and Mathahbhanga. There are few more rivers in the district viz. Ichhamati, Churni, Bhairabi and Jamuna. All the rivers flow from north to south keeping pace with general slope with district land.
The maximum height of the district above sea level is 17.06 metres in the Police Station of Karimpur and the minimum is 7.31 metres in the Police Station of Chakdaha.

1.4 FOREST
Although forest is an important resource for industrial utilization its presence in Nadia district is practically significant. There is no large forest area in the district. However, for administrative purpose the district has been divided into two ranges. One is Krishnagar range which consists of Mayakol, Chakhatisala, Mahatpur and Betuadahari forests. The other one is Ranaghat range which consists of Debagram Krishnagar-Radhakhantapur and Sankarpur Forests area. Out of the total area of 3,85,695 hectares of land in the district, forest occupies only 1216 hectares of land which works out to be 0.32% of the total geographical area of the district. The forest produce available in the district are Teak, Sisu, Gamar and fuel wood.

3.6 Growth Trend
Generally, industries are not spread uniformly throughout a district. It has a tendency to agglomerate at certain places. There are various reasons which are attributed for the concentration of units. However, for maximum economic benefit and up-liftment of an area, Govt. agencies and planners select some centres which have maximum developmental potential with minimum infrastructure and economics of scale. In economic terminology such places are known as growth centre. Some economic indicators like i) Population size. ii)Availability of economic facilities, iii) Adequate transport and communication, iv) Proximity to the existing commercial centres and markets, v) Availability of secondary infrastructure are taken into account while selecting growth centres of a district.
After taking into consideration the above factors the Study Team has identified five places viz. a) Ranaghat b) Chaka c) Tehatta d) Gayespur and e) Nabadwip as Growth Centres in the district. Industrial projects implemented in the district

3.7 Vendorisation / Ancillarisation of the Industry
The question of ancillary development in a district/place arises, when there is
dominating presence of large/Medium industrial undertakings and they can generate continuous demand for their various requirements like spares, components, equipments, etc. In this regard, the district of Nadia is quite lagging behind other industrially advanced district of West Bengal. The existing large/medium industrial units are mainly engaged in the manufacture of cotton yarn, oxygen gas, medicine, chemical items, electrical components, milk and milk products etc. They hardly need any such products which can be ancillarised. Hence, ancillary development programme in the district is at its nascent stage.

5. General issues raised by industry association during the course of meeting Since the district is basically agrarian, most of the land is under cultivation. Only some blocks have cultivable waste land and residual areas, which can be used for industrial accommodation. Kalyani Shilapanchal area houses several small scale units but the area needs proper infrastructural development. The Industrial Estates in Kalyani have not been properly utilized and have not yielded the desired results. NH 34 runs through the district and ensures good connectivity with the neighbouring districts and States. The district is also well connected to Kolkata via road and railway transport. There are several large and medium scale units providing ample scope for development of ancillary industries in the district. This field needs to be properly explored.
