Can you put a price on keeping fit and healthy?

Uncertain economic times are still lingering and people are as guarded as ever with their savings, and rightly so. Supermarkets have cottoned on to this fact and are offering quality produce at much lower prices which is great, but there are many things that are still making harmful dents in our wallets: Petrol prices, public transport, social nights out... But what about keeping fit? It's true that there are many free activities out there that you can get involved in right away: Going for a run round your local park, taking a swim in the sea, meeting up with friends for a game of football (providing one of your friends has a ball of course)... The list goes on.

But what if you want to get into power lifting? Or learn a martial art? Or try your hand at wakeboarding? You then have membership / class fees to think about. You may need to purchase some specialised clothing or gear. Perhaps you'll even need to acquire some form of insurance... Things can quickly mount up. And what if two months down the line into your newly found hobby you discover that it is in fact not for you? We've all been there. I can look back to my youth and remember being sure that roller hockey was something I was going to love and continue doing (I think I lasted four sessions).

My point here is not to put you off taking up a new sport or activity, in fact it's quite the opposite. Through a bit of trial and error we all eventually find the activity that suits us. You may even be lucky enough to find

several. It's the activity that makes us smile when we think about it. That keeps us engaged and inspired. And that may one day turn from a simple hobby into a significant part of our lives, one that you will tell your grandchildren about.

If you think you have found this already then you are lucky, but don't worry if you haven't. Have a read through the following pages of our 8th issue and see if anything takes your fancy. Pick up the phone, ask them any questions you have on your mind and book yourself on to a trial session. You may take to the activity like a duck to water, or maybe you'll realise that unfortunately it just isn't for you. If so, try something else! What do you have to lose?!

Once you find that activity that strikes a chord keep at it. By this point you'll no doubt have to reveal some of your hard earned savings, but you can be safe in the knowledge that every penny is not only going towards making you fitter and healthier, but also happier. Get your friends involved and you can then share the happiness with them as well!

Keeping fit and healthy doesn't have to be expensive either. In fact, just by dropping our name you can take advantage of a host of special offers featured throughout the pages of this magazine (and now highlighted on our Directory pages at the back of the issue). Seize the day and make the most of them.

Finally, for the second year running we have our very own stand booked for this year's Paddle Round the Pier event on Hove Lawns taking place on July 7th and 8th. Come and find us and let us tell you more about the in's and out's of keeping active in Brighton and Hove. We may even have some fantastic freebies to give you as well...

Enjoy the issue,

Ash

RAPID RESULTS with Brighton Bootcamp

Having trained in generic gyms through my life it has been a breath of fresh air moving to Brighton Bootcamp, for me, the health club model no longer works, people are still doing the same things there that they were 10 years ago, with little sign of change. You will work a million times harder in a much shorter space of time if you head to Brighton Bootcamp, and you will notice immediate changes in your fitness levels. Paul and Rick are excellent trainers, I think that the perception of bootcamp training is that people are in your face shouting, that isn't what happens, they have high expectations which means in turn you will work harder and train properly. I would absolutely recommend Brighton Bootcamp to anyone who is serious about getting fit and anyone who is open minded enough to look beyond the tired old model of health clubs to achieve your goals.Matt W

I saw not only a drastic change in my body shape over the 6 week course, but I also felt an amazing sense of achievement and overall wellbeing. I now continue to go on a regular basis (warning - it's addictive!) and it's great to see the continuous changes in my body and feel myself getting stronger and fitter. I like to challenge myself and with the help of Paul and Rick, I have been reaching and even going beyond my goals. They make me feel as though I can achieve anything. Cat C

We use a style of training called ‘Metabolic Conditioning,’ this combines resistance and cardiovascular exercises into one short explosive workout. We believe that when it comes to getting into great shape that less is more, spend less time training but achieve more.

The Paddle Round The Pier Beach festival makes another triumphant return to our seafront this July 7th & 8th. The event which started in 1996 with just 50 people attending now expects nearer to 60,000 for 2012! Paddle Director Dave Samuel said of the event, “It’s just such an inspiring event to be involved in as it manages to cater for such a diverse crowd! In all these years we haven’t ever had one bit of trouble (and in 2011 we had around 50,000 visitors!) which

is testament to the great vibe the event exudes.”

New to this year is the dedicated Ukulele Stage and Maritime Marathon (see page 28), and all young warriors simply must enter The Great Outdoors Nerf Battle Cage! For the adults there's also the Brazilian Paddle Beach Party on the Saturday evening! Still there are the old favourites: The Kids Stage (and the new Kids Crèche facility), the Tuaca Music Stage and over ten first rate outdoor eateries (who all cater for vegetarian and GLUTEN FREE diets!). Lincoln Blandford, Tutor for YMCAfit and Personal Trainer offers his unique insight into ‘suspension fitness’, a fitness trend that is growing in popularity within fitness facilities around the country, and his views on whether this new approach to fitness will stand the test of time in a constantly evolving industry

The term ‘fitness fad’ is loosely attached to any new and wonderful piece of fitness equipment that comes onto the market. Some immediately envisage a new piece of machinery or inflatable tool to be the one-stop shop to save them hours of toil within a gym. This belief is then often enhanced further when the clever marketing gurus attempt to package it up in such a way. Others immediately assume that as it is not their regular exercise prescription of the treadmill, stationary bike or x-trainer that it will serve no benefit to them and as such they need not worry about a piece of kit that will doubtless be gone by the time they have plucked up the courage to give it a go.

Essentially exercisers exercise to look good, feel good and be healthy. This is the one constant in the constantly evolving world of fitness. So what makes a new piece of equipment take the route of the rowing machine or the spin class, and survive as opposed to a well-trodden path of jazzercise and Tae

KEEPING YOUR CLIENTS

Bo into the archives?

For any new piece of kit or new training modality to develop from a ‘fad’ into a mainstay of the fitness industry, it needs to have a beneficial effect on the fitness of those taking part and more so, clients need to believe in the product. To evaluate the benefits we must first understand how it works.

SUSPENSION FITNESSEvery day we all happily carry around with us a mass that many of us would struggle to push, pull or lift in a gym environment. Usually we are blissfully unaware of how we are required to move and control our bodyweight when we perform everyday tasks. Suspension fitness involves a rope and pulley system with adjustable straps and

grips with integrated foot cradles that takes your bodyweight and, through the manipulation of angles, levers and pivot points, puts it to work. Suspension fitness has made free weights and resistance machines less pivotal in producing a challenging resistance workout as we can use what we always have - ourselves and gravity.

The kit is portable and hugely versatile which, from a personal trainer’s perspective, makes it excellent value as there is less need to buy or carry lots of other equipment. As long as a secure anchor point can be found, suspension fitness offers trainers many effective options to work with diverse client groups.

The illusive answer of whether

“Every day we all happily carry around with us a mass that many of us would struggle to push, pull or lift in a

gym environment”

IN SUSPENSE

BtnActive#8_17May_Repro.indd 15 17/05/2012 11:54

Page 16: Brighton Active Issue 08

16 ISSUE #8 JUNE 2012

clients will buy into this form of training remains unanswered. Essentially, the success or failure of a product is primarily dependent on results. Therefore it’s important to establish what results can be achieved through suspension fitness. The success of a weight training programme is often determined by bigger muscles, or the result of hitting the treadmill is determined by feeling less tired doing day to day tasks and often losing weight, so with suspension fitness and its overarching grouping of ‘functional training’, how do we ascertain success, and more importantly is this going to dictate its longevity?

FUNCTIONALTrainers seem to differ on exactly what the term ‘functional’ means. Who can deny the functional

training devotees mantra of ‘the body only knows movement, not muscle’? I agree as ‘creatures’ we are intent led. We decide on an action and use the best strategy we have to achieve it rather than thinking biceps, triceps or anything else.

However ‘functional’ as a term can get tricky, even heated. Some argue a biceps curl could be functional for a bodybuilder! Others will say we should consider ‘functional training’ as whole-body ‘movement patterns’, something that would have assisted us in our hunter-gatherer pasts! Surely when exercising, we should work on challenging our inherent human ability to move which will improve our quality of life.

To counter the idea ‘everything must be functional’ it is worth noting that

some gym goers do know muscles and they may still just want bigger biceps and a narrower waist. I wonder if ‘functional’ became ‘physically attractive’ whether you would have people lining up to ‘get functional’? As a personal trainer, I’m conscious that some clients will still come to me to increase muscle size and to reduce body fat no matter what we think is the most

“It is a piece of kit that we’ve been waiting on for quite some time;

portable, cheap, accessible

and incredibly versatile”

BtnActive#8_17May_Repro.indd 16 17/05/2012 11:54

Page 17: Brighton Active Issue 08

www.brightonactive.com 17

interesting approach or the most functional exercise.

BLENDING NEW AND OLDAny new method of training will bring with it new ways to achieve benefits, and the good news is that ‘functional training’ and suspension fitness can help do these things. However, we don’t have to throw out everything we have previously done. Instead we should re-evaluate our past practice, keeping the methods that have proved effective and adapting the methods which have proved less so, so that we get the best of everything. But new approaches don’t have to come in to the detriment of older ones. It shouldn’t be all or nothing. There should be a clever manipulation of new skills intertwined with those

that have worked in the past.

It's important for a trainer to remember that we are merely a service in a service industry. If we do not give the customers what they want to buy they will buy it somewhere else.

The good news for us, as trainers, is that we don’t have to make the call of defining ‘functional training’. We need to ensure that we have happy clients who achieve their goals. Now, in answer to the question of whether suspension fitness will gain in popularity, I believe it is a no-brainer. The equipment is so versatile that it can meet the needs of those who want to do functional and, maybe sit down for this bit, also ‘non-functional’ training too. If

you want to integrate muscles from foot to the hand you can. If isolating muscles is your thing, that’s possible here too. For a personal trainer, it is a piece of kit that we’ve been waiting on for quite some time; portable, cheap, accessible and incredibly versatile. For clients, it is new, interesting and produces results. What more could you ask for?! Isn’t it great for one piece of kit to offer such a variety in your exercise repertoire, your approaches to training, and your client base.

18 ISSUE #8 JUNE 2012

For the 36th year the annual bicycle ride from London to Brighton will be hitting town, this time on June 17th (Fathers Day for those of you that needed reminding), and as always it is in support of the British Heart Foundation. Did you know it is one of the biggest events held along Madeira Drive in the calendar year? As measured by individual participants, it is the biggest. It is also the Europe's biggest fund raising cycle ride, and perhaps is the most popular.

Although there are around 27,000 places allocated for the event, you can't hang around if you want to be sure to get one. Registration did not open until March 1st and nearly all places were gone by the end of the same month. So, the official advice is to get your application in quick. As you may already know I am taking on this challenge this year with my girlfriend and a handful of clients. Like the event itself I’m raising money for the BHF. It will be

BHF LONDON TO BRIGHTON BIKE RIDE WITH MP PT

This June, Martin Petrie of MP Personal Training will be taking on the London to Brighton Bike Ride in aid of the British Heart Foundation

the furthest I have ridden a bike in rather a long time, and the thoughts of how tight my hamstrings will be for the following week already haunt me.

The modern time ride starts from Clapham Common in South London and the route is measured at 54 miles. Whereas the first ride back in 1976 (a bit before my time) started in Hyde park and measured a massive 95 miles, with only 37 of the 60 riders that started getting to Brighton. In the first three years the event grew from 60 to 1000 riders and by 1989 the event had to be moved to Clapham Common due to the sheer numbers of participants.

For those of you that don’t know a huge amount about the British Heart Foundation, here are a few facts.

- Heart and circulatory disease is the UK's biggest killer. 570 people die from it every day- In the UK, almost 2.6 million people are living with coronary heart disease- The BHF is the largest funder of research into heart disease in the UK

- Currently, the BHF funds 26 Professors and over 1,200 research projects- In the UK, 60% of patients who need it are denied access to cardiac rehabilitation- Cardiac rehabilitation only costs £600 per patient. A single day in a coronary care unit costs £1,400- In the UK someone dies from coronary heart disease every six minutes- Currently in the UK, there are approximately 150,000 people aged 16 and over living with congenital heart disease- The BHF invests over £203 every minute in vital heart research, prevention and care

This will be a great event with Madeira Drive being full of family, friends and well wishers waiting to welcome and encourage the riders as they approach the finish line. People cheering on myself, Becky and the rest of our group will be much appreciated.

IVAM MACIELWe caught up with Brighton’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Academy’s Head Coach, Ivam Maciel to talk about his passion for martial arts and how he has become one of

the prominent teachers of the sport in Sussex

Hi Ivam. Tell us a bit about yourself, including how long you have been teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the UK and how you came to open your own academy in HoveI’m from Curitiba, Brazil and have been involved in Martial Arts for 12 years. BJJ became a part of my life from the young age of 15. It has changed everything for me and has been my foundation ever since. During this time on the mats I also got involved with Vale Tudo (old school Brazilian’s MMA) and have been lucky enough to learn from great people such as Anderson Silva (UFC Middleweight Champion) and Eduardo Brigadeiro (one of the first Black Belts under the legendary Ricardo De La Riva).

In 2007 I came to Brighton to teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I started teaching at ZT Fight Skool which was a great experience to work with Pro-MMA fighters with a great foundation of grappling. There I shared the skills I know and helped them to improve their game with pure Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Also at ZT I learnt a lot of Boxing, Muay Thai and Wrestling which helped take my game to the next level.

With all the tools in hand, and with a great training camp I decided to make my transition to the MMA scene. Step by step I won an MMA amateur tournament (3 fights in one afternoon), then made my professional debut winning all my consecutive fights using my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills by my favourite submission, the Triangle Choke. Time went by and I won my first MMA title: ZT Fight Night - Lightweight Champion. I’ve defended it twice and gained a lot of experience which I share today with my students.

In February 2011, my dream of getting back to my roots and teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu full time came true as I opened Brighton's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy. Since then I’ve been working hard to provide my students with a traditional BJJ experience - pure Jiu-Jitsu made in Brazil - helping cater for those who want to learn BJJ as a sport and self defence, exactly how I learnt back in my beloved country.

Is there a certain entry / fitness level required for someone to start learning BJJ? Can someone start as an 'absolute beginner?'Of course they can! It does not matter if you have never had a martial art class in your life, nor does your fitness level matter. As long as you are ready to learn then we are ready to teach. I actually prefer to teach beginners because they don't have any bad habits. I respect all martial arts but some people do bring with them bad habits, which sometimes can take longer to fix.

Tell us more about the Beginner classesWe teach Kids from 6 years old and Adults from 16 to their 50’s. There are 3 classes dedicated exclusively to the Beginners a week: 6pm every Monday, Wednesday

and Friday. In those classes the student will become familiar with the discipline involved in BJJ alongside learning the ‘bread and butter’ of the game, such as guard, take downs and submission manoeuvres. After a few classes, a beginner will definitely change the way they see ‘fighting.’ They will understand that to defend themselves they do not need to punch or kick anybody. The basic techniques in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are the best self defence.

How long before a Beginner can move up to the Intermediate classes? The average time is around 3-4 months if they train 3 times a week, which is the recommended minimum. After this time they won't have to call themselves a beginner anymore. Everybody is different though and it can take a shorter or longer period of time depending on how many times they train. If a Beginner attends the 3 Beginner classes each week they will progress very well, but if they also attend an hour long Open Mats session with each class, and perhaps research BJJ at home (You Tube is great for this!) when they have the time, then they can become great! That is what can make all the difference.

What can a new student expect to get out of their first few months of training? There are many rewards that come from studying BJJ. It works step by step, starting with the improvement of your fitness levels and knowledge of how to defend yourself if the occasion calls for it. The second step is connected with the first; by knowing how to defend yourself your confidence will improve dramatically. Alongside this you will connect with people, make new friends and be part of a new worldwide family called Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Anywhere in the world you go, as soon you find another BJJ enthusiast; you will easily open up a new door.

What else can a Beginner / Intermediate do to progress quicker?Competitions! These are a great target for people to train towards and are a fantastic experience, helping people progress much quicker. By knowing you have a competition coming up, you will have to train harder.

The real fight starts weeks before the official match - you fight against yourself first! Everyone can gain something from being a part of competitions.

How long does it take for a White Belt to earn their Blue Belt?It can take an average of 15 months, however during the journey to the new belt the student will receive stripes. Every belt, apart from the Black, has 4 stripes (White, Blue, Purple and Brown) which are a reward for the students progression and also prepares them for the next level.

With so many martial art disciplines out there why should someone choose to study BJJ? BJJ is the Godfather of modern martial arts. Since Royce Gracie shocked the world winning UFC 1 and 2, people began to realise that BJJ is the most effective martial art out there. From a self defence perspective there is nothing better. You could be an accomplished boxer but if you are taken down to the ground then you will not be able to fight. You have to know how to grapple and how to defend yourself on the ground. That is why BJJ is such a solid foundation to have.

What does it mean for you to teach BJJ here in Brighton? For me, it's great. BJJ is all about sharing skills, meeting new people, making new friends and forever learning which is why people enjoy coming to the academy. I learn everyday with my students and also am constantly trying to improve my fighter and instructor side. Jiu-Jitsu never ends, there is always something new and many times you will think to yourself, “Why did I not think about that before?!” I’m passionate and I love what I do. It's this passion that I like to transmit on to my students, and without a doubt you will definitely have a good time training with us at BJJ Academy. Oss!!

EXERCISE CAN MAKE YOU FAT!

Whenever I say this to people, I get some strange looks and usually comments on how I don’t know what I am talking about. “Exercise making you fat! You must be mad,” I often here. However, what I actually said was that too much exercise can make you fat!

If you exercise frequently without adequate rest and recuperation, the body will produce excessive amounts of a hormone called Cortisol. Cortisol is an important hormone in the body that is secreted by the adrenal glands. It is involved in many bodily functions including:

• Providing proper glucose metabolism• Regulation of blood pressure• Insulin release for blood sugar maintenance• Immune function• Inflammatory response

While Cortisol is an important and helpful part of the body’s response to stress, it is important to ensure that we allow ourselves adequate

rest and recovery to allow the Cortisol levels to return to normal. Unfortunately overtraining can cause Cortisol levels to remain elevated, resulting in a state of chronic stress. Prolonged elevated levels of Cortisol in the blood stream have been shown to have negative effects such as:

• Impaired cognitive performance• Suppressed thyroid function• Blood sugar imbalances, such as hyperglycemia• Decreased bone density• Decrease in muscle tissue (resulting in a lower metabolism)• Higher blood pressure• Lowered immunity• Increased abdominal fat, which is associated with a greater increase of health problems, than fat deposited in other areas. Some of the health problems associated with increased abdominal fat include heart attacks, and the development of metabolic syndrome, plus higher levels of 'bad' cholesterol (LDL) and lower levels of 'good' cholesterol

(HDL) which can lead to other health problems

To keep levels of Cortisol healthy and under control, it is imperative that adequate rest and recovery be undertaken, and that overtraining is avoided. The best way to avoid overtraining is to ensure that your workouts are short but intense. This will allow for an adequate training overload, while avoiding overtraining.

At Brighton Bootcamp we encourage our clients to adopt the 'Less Is More' approach - Less workouts, but more intensity! Our workouts are designed to blast fat, boost strength, build muscle and improve fitness with a minimal time commitment. In fact, we have seen tremendous results with just 3 x 45 minute Bootcamp sessions per week, with the main portion of each workout (not including warm-up and cool-down) usually taking just 20-30 minutes! So remember, more exercise is not better, and that to achieve some amazing changes in your body you should take the less is more approach. Less time training = More results!

HAVE YOU HEARD WHAT'S HAPPENING AT

The King Alfred Leisure Centre has been at the heart of the local community since the end of World War Two. Here at Brighton Active we’re big fans of the centre as it has so much more going on than you might realise

Since Freedom Leisure began managing the centre in April 2011 the class timetable has grown considerably and the spectacular ballroom now plays host to some of the best Zumba classes in the city. The recently refurbished 40-station gym has great views over the swimming pool and there is a spinning studio with 15 bikes. The King Alfred is also undergoing a refurbishment of the changing facilities and will soon have brand new showers, toilets and changing rooms for all.

The centre has an 8-lane 25-metre pool, a lagoon area and a teaching pool making it suitable for swimmers of all ages and abilities. Swimming is FREE for under 11’s and from June 12-16 year olds will also be able to swim for free after 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays!

“I love the King Alfred because it’s bursting with personality,” says Member Ella Moye who loves to swim, use the gym and take Pilates classes. “It might be an old building but it’s got character and the location is great too; right on the seafront and close to town. I can't wait to use the new changing facilities, I've heard they're going to be really bright and modern.”

The King Alfred is fast becoming a sports hub too, with regular sessions including Back to Badminton and Back to Netball. The centre is home to no less than six martial arts clubs as well boxing and kickboxing clubs, all of which welcome new members. There are also multi-sport sessions for kids every Monday and Wednesday during school holidays.

COME AND SHRED THE LAGOON!

Riding opportunities for all abilities at Lagoon Wake Park

Lagoon Wake Park, the South Coast’s first System 2.0 cable to open last April and previously known as Wake Up Brighton, has not only changed its name but has opened a second cable on Hove Lagoon. Further exciting news include the official accreditation by the British Water Ski & Wakeboard Association, which will put the Lagoon Wake Park and Brighton & Hove on the map of the national and international competition circuit.

The second cable means that there will be more riding opportunities this season, giving even more people access to the growing sport. On top of the second Sesitec System 2.0, the arrival of new sliders and obstacles has excited the riders of all levels and ages too, allowing them to learn and practise new tricks. The new toys include the much loved Roof Top Rail from Industry Wake Parks which was used at the London Boat Show and will have a new home at Hove Lagoon from this spring, as well as 24 foot long Incline Rail from Industry Wake Parks and a box with bank rail.

Lagoon Wake Park has been described as ‘pretty damn red hot’ and current World champion Nick Davies said: “The roof top rail is so sick! Perfect length and width and so smooth for long presses and tech tricks!” Pro rider Matt Crowhurst, a well known and respected key figurehead for the UK wake scene, will be running regular coaching sessions at Lagoon Wake Park throughout the season. The cable is perfect for kitesurfers as well, with the high pull from the cable making it a perfect riding experience for kitesurfers of all abilities and allowing them improve their skills when there is no wind to be out on the water.

The cable is suitable for wakeboarders of all levels but complete beginners must attend

a short Beginner Course. Prices for one hour sessions are £25 and the 2 hour ‘Learn to Wakeboard Sessions’ cost £50 per person. If you take out the Lagoon Wake Beach Club membership you can book as many wakeboard sessions as you like plus enjoy weekly wakeboard clinics, pro clinics with Matt Crowhurst and in-house wakeboard competitions, all from £37.50 per month which is a bargain!

Lagoon Wake Park is sponsored by ION Essentials. Go to www.lagoonwakepark.co.uk or call 01273 424 842 for further information and to book your riding session now! You can also join www.facebook.com/LagoonWakePark

The Maritime Marathon is run as part of our favourite beach festival, Paddle Round The Pier, taking place on July 7th and 8th. Google 'Maritime Marathon' and you’ll find lots of running races dotted across the worlds coastline, but this is the first ever marathon that actually takes place on water!

For 2012 there are three crafts of entry:✦ Standup Paddleboard (SUP)✦ Traditional Prone Paddleboard✦ Ocean Ski (the razor-thin sit-on-top kayak originally used for lifeguarding)

This is certainly the toughest paddle race in the UK, and potentially in Europe, as paddling into the wind for

6-8 hours is no easy feat! All the competitors in this inaugural event have been vetted by the organisers and have long distance paddling pedigree. Supported by the growing popularity of SUP’s, distance paddle sports continue to grow at an amazing rate across the globe.

In 2012 the SUP race is limited to just two classes (length of board). Half the field will be paddling on a standard sized 12’ 6” and the other half will be on 'unlimited class,' which can be anything from 12’ 6” up to around 16’ long.

Ocean Ski Racing came about after the development of specific competition ski’s designed for Surf Lifesaving contests. These contests regularly cover 10k distances,

MARITIME MARATHON

So you think running a marathon is tough? The Maritime Marathon is coming to town but be warned, it’s not one for the faint hearted!

but throw a 26 mile race into the equation and no-one really knows how each entrant will cope. Even so there will be Olympic athletes taking part as everyone realises that it’s going to be a challenge for even the seasoned professional.

Lying as if on a surfboard and paddling that way for 26 miles is many people’s idea of hell. However this is another ever increasing sport with the likes of the Molokai race in Hawaii (now in its 16th year) having shown just how popular this discipline is (check out www.molokai2oahu.com to learn more). Brighton’s Maritime Marathons Traditional Paddle Board Race will see the countries best Iron Men and Surf Lifesaving athletes battling the 26 mile course this July.

Luckily all the equipment used is specifically designed for distance work. The long sleek hull shapes cut through the choppy conditions, and the bow of the craft displaces the wave face as it breaks as efficiently as possible. Yet the UK crews are faced with rather more problematic conditions than their Hawaiian brethren; The distance between each wave / swell in the English Channel is remarkably shorter, therefore it's harder to ride the unbroken wave face as the troughs between are short and narrow. The wind in the channel is also a big factor as it can change direction in an instant, and the resistance from having the wind against you (especially when standing on a

SUP) can mean you actually travel backwards if ever you stop paddling.

All the competitors are experienced athletes who would never normally fall-in when Paddling, but mistakes do happen as no two waves are ever the same. If you do get wet and it's windy and your three miles offshore then hypothermia is a very real risk. Just ask Hawaiian champion SUP paddle racer Ekolu Kalama when he fell in three years ago - the water was so cold to him that he practically walked on water to get back on his board!

Even if you remain dry and it’s a flat, calm day, enduring a continual workout for 6-8 hours and you risk hyperthermia as you simply can’t dump the heat that you build up. Oh, and did I mention sunstroke, drowning, snapping / losing a paddle, trying to refuel off a boat and fog banks? It's all part of the fun of being a long distance paddler!

Come down to this year's Paddle Round The Pier festival and show your support as the competitors hit the water at 9am on the Saturday morning - then try a few boards for yourself on the have-a-go demo beach! Don’t worry, the 26 miles isn’t compulsory.

30 ISSUE #8 JUNE 2012

After the excitement of this year's race did you have a sudden rush of blood to the head and sign up for next year's Brighton Marathon? Or perhaps you’re an old hand at distance races and are focussed on improving your time next year? Either way CrossFit is making ripples in the running world by teaching people to change their attitudes towards conventional distance training and replace the long, slow miles for short, intense sessions.

Brian MacKenzie of CrossFit Endurance, an offshoot of the rapidly growing CrossFit training method, has the data to prove that the best and most efficient way to train for distance races is with 5-6 strength and conditioning sessions a week alongside 2-3 high intensity tempo and interval running sessions. Himself a veteran of multiple 50-100 mile races and the Canadian Ironman, he is getting amazing results using the above formula.

“I’ve studied HR, VO2 Max, blood lactate, and everything that goes with it,” Brian quotes. “I’ve got 5+ years of heart rate data on clients and my own training. I’ve personally

BORN TO RUNIf you thought CrossFit was all about Olympic lifting and intense WOD's then you only know half the story. Here the CFC crew tell us how your running performance can be taken to the next level with their help

tested blood lactate levels on hundreds of athletes. It all came down to this... When we got rid of the slow stuff, added intensity and heavy weights, everyone got faster and everyone got healthier.”

So why not give your training a boost this year and drop in to CrossFit Connect to learn more about how those 10-20 hours a week of long, slow runs can be replaced with short, sharp sessions where you learn multiple new skills, get stronger and leaner in the process and smash your previous race times.

Here's what a client of ours had this to say about CrossFit and our training methods at Connect:

“I have done two marathons and one ultra-marathon in the last three months. I finished the marathons in 3:52 and 3:48 and the 31 miler in 4:26. I credit the CrossFit methodology for these performances, all of which were PBs (personal bests). I was able to stand on the start line without any of the overtraining injuries that I used to have from the junk miles

I did in the build-up to marathons previously. Furthermore, I now have a much stronger core and have managed to permanently get rid of a long-term hamstring injury. Finally, I think Crossfit gives you a mental toughness that really helps when you tackle a marathon.” - Liz L

32 ISSUE #8 JUNE 2012

Adding greater muscle mass to your physique or improving your sporting performance is not all about spending hours in the gym lifting heavy weights or running drills on the sports field. Your time training could be solid, religious even, but without an adequate nutrition plan to follow along side it all the sweat and hard work you put in could be doing you more harm than good.

Nutrition is an area often overlooked by so many people today, even from those who like to think that they live a healthy lifestyle. There is a clear lack of education on the subject and matters aren’t helped when supermarkets are saturated with refined processed foods, offering hardly any nutritional value at all. It doesn’t take long for us to realise that there is no surprise in the fact that we are a country with obesity levels higher than ever,

NUTRITION DECRYPTIONPerformance Foods in Hove help get to the bottom of the importance of nutrition along side living an active lifestyle

and on the increase.

Training the body, whether it be hitting the gym or playing sport, is only half the job done. Ask any professional athlete from a bodybuilder to a marathon runner and they will all tell you the same regarding nutrition’s importance - That your body will not recover or grow unless you have the appropriate diet and rest!

Let's take someone looking to pack on some size at the gym. This person could hit the gym hard at least three times a week for around one hour each session. However, they would neglect a post workout shake or meal, and wouldn't eat until at least three hours after their gym session has finished. The consequences: No size gains!

The same would happen for a sprinter, climber, rower or gymnast. They would put all their focus into their training, but virtually none into their nutrition, resulting in a limited improvement in their performance.

So why then is this the case? When we exercise we are actually breaking down muscle tissue and causing minor tears (also known

as a catabolic process). This is where the importance of nutrition comes in: After dropping that last weight in the gym or running that last lap of the track, our bodies will be screaming out for nutrients to start the recovery process. The two most important nutrients here are protein and carbohydrates. The carbohydrates will primarily be used to replenish depleted energy levels (glucose and glycogen), and the protein will be used to relay new muscle tissue through a process called protein synthesis. This will put the body into a tissue building state, also known as an anabolic process, and will promote muscle growth and size.

If you neglect a post workout shake or meal your body will stay in a catabolic state, continuing to break muscle tissue down - the complete opposite of your intended goal!

Supplement shakes are great because you can transport them with you wherever your activity takes you and drink them straight after you exercise, just by adding water. In fact it is this half an hour period directly after any exercise where your body will be able to use any protein or carbohydrates it receives more effectively. So before you next head off to your local gym or sports club remember... Don't just do half the battle - grab your shaker and go to war!

MARK'S MISSION AND TRAINING ETHOS:A lot of people don't enjoy going to the gym. The three most common reasons I hear are:

1. It's boring2. I don't have time3. I don't have the motivation to put my body through the pain of exercise

Unfortunately, in order to achieve most fitness goals it will require time and dedication. There aren't any quick fixes, at least none of which will work in the long-term. There's no way around that.

With this in mind, it is therefore essential that training programmes for clients are written and delivered in such a way that they will enjoy it, helping stimulate positive emotions and feelings. When this is achieved, then the fact that it's hard work becomes merely a residual factor. The fact that it's hard is of little or no bother.

I don't believe in spending hours working-out in a monotonous gym environment because for most

MARK PERSONAL TRAINING

Shape up your mind and body for the summer with Mark Personal Training

people it does not stimulate these positive emotions of excitement, exhilaration and fun that are important for long-term results. I will also not stand in the gym next to you button pushing while you run on a treadmill for 30 minutes.

I believe in alternative approaches which stimulate both the mind and body, that will release these positive emotions which, over time, will overwrite any negative associations you may have with exercising. This positive mentality that I will build inside you is important because it is this which will drive you to continue training.

What results can you expect?

After training with me it is safe to say that not only will you have noticeable physiological improvements in your body, but you will have a completely different outlook on exercise. It will no longer become a chore, and you will actually enjoy it!

One of the reasons why I can achieve this with clients is because each and every session is a carefully pre-planned, uniquely tailored, highly focused, time efficient and progressive workout. You will leave a training session having achieved the same, or often even more than what many gym goers get from training on their own for hours in the gym!

ABOUT MARK PERSONAL TRAININGMark Personal Training was set up earlier this year by Mark de Arriba Smith, who having been a specialist sports conditioning PT for the last two years has, in this short time, delivered training programmes for a number of large organisations including David Lloyd, DC Leisure and most recently Gran Melia Palacio de Isora, one of the world's top 100 hotels.
