BRIGHTONSPEED TRIALS1956

This Event is the 51st Anniversary of Brighton Speed Trialsand the entry is again a record, 256 cars against 280 cars entered lastyear. What Ill) amazing selection of vehicles W observe, ranging from250 c.c, to 27000 c.c, Ken Whllrton E.B.A. is present to defend hisCar Course Record of 23.63 sees. This time has only been improvedhy R. Charlton (998 c.c. Vincent) the ~rotorcycle Course Record hold-er who last year lecame the first man to exceed an average speed of100 m.p.h. at Brighton Speed Trials with a. time of 22.27 secs. TheSwandean Spitfire Special driven by F. M. Wilcock bas had consider-able modifications since competing 2 years ago and we hope that the27000 c.c. aero-engine car, built specially for this event, will show itspaces today.

Class Records broken in 1955 event : R. Wa.tling Greenwoodunproved his record on an R.W.G. for Sports Cal's up to 1100 c.c.from 34.89 to 2$).65 sees. with a. Cooper. Sports Cars 1101 to 1500 c.c,Lt. Col. White, Lotus :\1.G., 30.19 secs. breaking H. Lester's M.G.record of 31.89 sees. Sports Cars over 2501 c.c. Hern's Longstanding record of 30.S0 secs.Although t.lu~rewas !1 record entry of 18 in the Ladies Class, the 1948record by 111'1:1.1<'. R. Gerard, KR.A., 25.BO sees. remained unbroken.

Looking through a Results Sheet for ] 948 it is interesting tocompare todays record entry with that entry of 120 cars. Many wellknown names were included-Reg Parnell, }fn::;aro.ti,won the Racing('al' Class up to 1500 c.c. in 28.32 sees. S. Allard and R. C. C.Walkerlioth competing tOfla.y were also at this meeting. )Iike Hawthornand Stirling )Ioss started their racing careers at Brighton Speed Trials.

Brightomans competing in the Racing Classes include T. H.:-'11I1<lllick.Sbaddick Viper 500 C.C., 1. E. Rahy, whose Cooper 500 C.C.\\11" class winner last year. )Iike Anthony whose Lotus-Bristol bas the('nginc mounted on its side thereby decreasing frontal area.

The organisers have endeavoured to pair Sports Car Competitorsto give interesting comparisons with cars of equal performance, but inthe higher capucitv Racing Car Classes this bas not been attempted illIh(! interests of safety.
