Brightspace Platform 10.6.4Features

FeaturesBrightspace Learning Environment

Brightspace Daylight – Navbar now contains Overflow menu links | NewThe Brightspace navbar now includes a More menu that contains overflow items if there are space limitations due to a narrow screen (such as a tablet or phone screen) or a large number of links. The More menu appears as the last menu link on the Daylight navbar. The changes make the appearance of the core Brightspace Platform consistent across the product offering.

For the purposes of the early release of the Daylight Experience, it is recommended that you only turn on the Daylight Experience in test environments. In previous releases, you have seen Daylight applied to Brightspace Capture, and Brightspace Assignment Grader for Android, and more recently to Brightspace Learning Environment. By installing Daylight in your test environment, you can see how it affects core tools and workflows in Brightspace and follow the progress each month as we apply more Daylight design updates across the product suite.

Impact of Change Technical Details Next Steps

Slight disruption to all users due to the changes to the user interface. There are no workflow changes as a result of these changes.

The Daylight navbar changes appear only when the configuration variable d2l.System.BrightspaceDaylightExperience is turned on.

You must turn on the configuration variable in Admin Tools > Config Variable Browser before you can see the Daylight updates.

For the purposes of the early access release of the Daylight Experience beta program, it is recommended that you only turn on the Daylight Experience in test environments.

Content - Separate Org files from Shared files | UpdateInstructors can now be set up to only view or view and edit files in the Shared Files area as a result of the newly created Browse Shared Files and Upload/Edit/Delete Shared Files permissions under the Manage Files tool.

Instructors can store templates and files in the Shared Files area and other instructors can then import these files into their courses when creating content. If instructors with the Browse Shared Files permission try to edit a file in the Shared Files area, they are prompted to save a copy of the file in the Course Offering Files area. If instructors have both the Browse Shared Files and Upload/Edit/Delete Shared Files permissions, they are prompted to either save a copy of the file they want to edit in the Course Offering Files area, create a new file within the Shared Files area, or overwrite the existing file within the Shared Files area.

This feature implements PIE Ideas D1522 and D2705.

Impact of Change Technical Details Next Steps

Slight impact to instructors due to change in workflow.

If instructors previously had the See the file listing permission at the organization level, they will be granted the Browse Shared Files permission at the organization level. With just this permission, instructors cannot edit files in the Shared Files area.

If instructors previously had the See the file listing permission at the organization level and had at least one of the existing Edit/Upload/Delete Manage Files permissions at the organization level, they will be granted the Upload/Edit/Delete Shared Files permission at the organization level.

You must have these permissions set before you can use this feature.

Content - Support default MIME type mapping | UpdateInstructors can now upload new file types into their courses and learners can download them without encountering an error. This is the same behavior if a default application MIME type mapping was added. This feature changes the default behavior when learners try to download new file types that instructors have uploaded into course content and have linked to within an HTML file.

Impact of Change Technical Details Next Steps

Slight impact to instructors who can upload new file types into course content and link to them within an HTML file.

Restricted file types (like *.exe) still cannot be uploaded into Content. There is no change to upload functionality or restrictions.

Note that any new special file types that must be opened with a specific application instead of being downloaded, for example, a new media type, must be registered as the correct MIME type and require a code change in Brightspace Learning Environment.

Intelligent Agents - Tool Improvements | NewBrightspace Learning Environment 10.6.4 introduces new features and functionality for Intelligent Agents:

A new history page allows users creating Intelligent Agents to see each time the agent runs, which users it identifies, what emails have been sent, and details on any errors that occurred during the agent run. You can view this page by clicking View History on the Edit Agent page. It is also available from the context menu of the agent on the Agent List page. You can view the history of the most recently executed run directly from Results of Last Run in the agent list. This lists how many users were identified, and/or error information. This feature implements PIE item D158.

A new mode for running Intelligent Agents allows users to select Practice Run from the agent context menu on the Agent List page. This runs the agent, and reports back a list of users who met the specified criteria. Users identified in a practice run are not notified or emailed. A practice run does not count as an action when using the Take action only the first time the agent’s criteria are satisfied for a user type of agent. As with existing Intelligent Agents, the agent must be turned on to trigger a practice run. In conjunction with the new history page, users can also now see the history of all practice runs. This feature partially implements PIE item D2312.

In Intelligent Agents Settings, instructors can now set custom values for the Name that emails come from and Reply-To address for responses so that the automated emails can appear to come from the instructor instead of from a helpdesk. Learners can reply directly to the agent emails and replies are directed to the instructor. If instructors want their emails to continue to come from a helpdesk and do not want to have a reply-to function, they don't have to take any action to maintain the existing behaviour. The course values for Name that emails come from and Reply-To address for responses are not copied during copy course components and instructors need to update these fields post-copy. This feature implements PIE items D157 and D2884.

When an instructor uses custom values, the Name that emails come from displays to learners as the person from whom the email is sent, both in the email header and in Messages alerts in the minibar. When learners reply to an email, responses route to the email address specified in Reply-To address for responses.

There is no longer a 4000-character limit on email text from Intelligent Agents. This is now unlimited. This feature implements PIE item D1979.

The Agent Name field in an Intelligent Agent previously truncated to 50 characters. It now has an available length of 128 characters.

Existing Intelligent Agents without any conditions attached to them (“empty” agents) no longer run and spam all users. When an empty agent is triggered, it fails with an error and is automatically turned off. This error info is available on the history page. This feature implements PIE items D1158 and D1159.

Users can now copy Intelligent Agents within the same course from a new context menu item for each agent listed in the Agent List. The copy is called "Copy of <name>" and is turned off by default. This feature implements PIE item D2858.

Impact of Change Technical Details Next Steps

Slight impact to users creating Intelligent Agents due to a tool change providing a new history page within Intelligent Agents.

Users require the existing permission Manage Agents to view the history page.

Some data from agent runs done prior to the release of this feature is migrated to the new history page. For example, users see past agent runs listed, however no email information is available. For agents where Take action only the first time the agent’s criteria are satisfied for a user is set, migrations include which users received emails on past runs, so that re-notification does not occur.

n/a

Slight impact to users creating Intelligent Agents due to a tool change that allows for practice runs of Intelligent Agents.

Users require the existing permission Manage Agents to select a practice run for an Intelligent Agent.

n/a

Slight impact to administrators due to new configuration variables to support instructors wanting to use the new email functionality.

Slight impact to instructors due to tool change that allows for custom values to be used for the Name that emails come from and Reply-To address for responses fields in Intelligent Agent Settings.

The configuration variables d2l.Tools.IntelligentAgents.EmailFromName and d2l.Tools.IntelligentAgents.EmailReplyTo have been created to support this functionality. No action is required on the part of the administrator.

Instructors who want their agents to continue to come from a helpdesk and who do not want to have a reply-to function can do nothing and the existing behavior is maintained.

Instructors who want to override the system values with their own name and/or email can do this via the Settings page in Intelligent Agents in their course.

The course values for Name that emails come from and Reply-To address for responses are not copied during copy course components.

n/a

Slight impact to instructors due to tool change that allows for increased number of characters in the email text from Intelligent Agents.

Brightspace Platform 10.6.4Fixed Issues

Fixed IssuesAccessibility

PRB0052368Improvements have been made to the minibar to make navigation easier for screen readers within Brightspace Learning Environment.

Found in Brightspace platform 10.6.1.

Assignments

PRB0052201Previously, when you used Shared Rubrics and copied a course, the default scoring rubric on an assignment submission folder was not copied over.

Now, when you use Shared Rubrics and copy a course, the default scoring rubric on an assignment submission folder is copied over as expected.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.3.0.

To reproduce this fix:

1. In Brightspace Learning Environment, create an org level rubric.

2. Share the rubric with all children.

3. Create a course.

4. Create an assignments submission folder in the course.

5. Associate the rubric to the assignments submission folder and set this rubric as the default scoring rubric.

6. Create a second course.

7. Copy the first course into the second course.

8. Observe that the default scoring rubric is copied over, as expected.

PRB0052440Previously, when you viewed a list of groups on the Assignment Submissions page, if the group names had numerical values, for example, Group 1, Group 2, they were sorted alphanumerically (Group 10 appeared before Group 2).

Now, when you view a list of groups on the Assignment Submissions page, the group names are sorted as expected.

Brightspace Platform 10.6.4Fixed Issues

PRB0052451Previously, when you created a Turnitin-enabled assignment submission folder more than 7 days prior to the start date of a course, and you used GradeMark, an error occurred.

Now, you can create a Turnitin-enabled assignment submission folder more than 7 days prior to the start date of a course, and use GradeMark, as expected.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.6.3.

To reproduce this fix:

1. As a user with the instructor role, access a course in Brightspace Learning Environment.

2. Ensure your course has GradeMark and the Turnitin LTI integration enabled in the config variable browser (D2L.3rdParty.TurnItIn variables).

3. Create an assignment submission folder but do not specify a start date.

4. Navigate to the Turnitin tab and note that the GradeMark Available date is set to 7 days in the future, by default.

5. Enable the Turnitin submission folder with this default GradeMark Available date and observe that it works as expected.

PRB0052095In some cases when using Internet Explorer, if the User Account settings were set to Show secondary window as Popups, the Assignments Add a File popup window did not appear as expected.

When the User Account settings are set to Show secondary window as Popups, the Add a File popup window now appears as expected.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.6.1.

To reproduce this fix:

1. In a Brightspace Learning Environment course, create an assignment submission folder.

2. Enroll a learner into the course.

3. As the learner, navigate to Account Settings and turn on the Show secondary window as Popups.

4. In Assignments, open a the folder.

Brightspace Platform 10.6.4Fixed Issues

Brightspace ePortfolio and Brightspace ePortfolio Mobile

PRB0052211Previously, in the Brightspace ePortfolio application on an iOS device, items under My Items were numbered and the numbering started at zero rather than at one.

A change has been made to the Brightspace ePortfolio application on an iOS device so that the items under My Items are no longer numbered.

Found in ePortfolio 10.6.1.

Brightspace Valence

PRB0051880Previously, the API call http://docs.valence.desire2learn.com/res/dropbox.html#get--d2l-api-le-(version)-(orgUnitId)-dropbox-folders did not return the expected list of available assignment submission folders for classes with a very high number of enrollments (20,000+ users). The call timed out and displayed an error.

Now, the d2l.Tools.Dropbox.SkipApiUserCount configuration variable returns calls faster for a specific org unit. Call D2L Support and request for this configuration variable to be turned on. Note that this configuration variable will turn off some features of the API call that returns various user counts.

Found in Brightspace platform 10.6.0.

PRB0052311Previously, when you updated a content topic using the API call PUT /d2l/api/le/(version)/(orgUnitId)/content/topics/(topicId), the orgUnitId (location field) was incorrect in the database.

Now, when you update a content topic using the API call PUT /d2l/api/le/(version)/(orgUnitId)/content/topics/(topicId), the orgUnitId (location field) is accurate in the database.

Found in Brightspace platform 10.3.0.

PRB0051480Previously, when you created groups or sections using Valence APIs or IPSIS, an enforced path was set as the organization unit paths. These paths were created in error and they bloated the size of the enforced course content directory.

Now, when you create groups or sections using Valence APIs or IPSIS, organization units do not get enforced paths set as their organization unit paths.

Found in Brightspace platform 10.5.5.

Brightspace Platform 10.6.4Fixed Issues

Content

PRB0044796Previously, users with the View Files permission for Manage Files were able to save and edit files in the Shared Folder area while adding content to a course. If one user modified a shared content file that was used in multiple locations, the file was overwritten and the changes appeared in all locations.

Now, users must have the following newly created permissions:

Browse Shared Files - to see shared files that they could add to course content or other locations in Brightspace Learning Environment.

Upload/Edit/Delete Shared Files - to upload, edit, or delete content within the Shared Files area.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.3.0 SP5.

PRB0050695Previously, if a video was embedded into a content topic using an iFrame, the Full screen button did not work when the content topic was viewed.

Now, if a video is embedded into a content topic using an iFrame, the Full screen button works successfully when the content topic is viewed.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.5.3.

To reproduce this fix:

1. In the Content tool, create a new file.

2. Click Insert Stuff.

3. Click Enter Embed Code.

4. In the Embed Code field, paste the following:<iframe id="kaltura_player" src="https://cdnapisec.kaltura.com/p/811482/sp/81148200/embedIframeJs/uiconf_id/27551951/partner_id/811482?iframeembed=true&playerId=kaltura_player&entry_id=1_1k5gmslp&flashvars[streamerType]=auto&amp;flashvars[leadWithHTML5]=true&amp;flashvars[sideBarContainer.plugin]=true&amp;flashvars[sideBarContainer.position]=left&amp;flashvars[sideBarContainer.clickToClose]=true&amp;flashvars[chapters.plugin]=true&amp;flashvars[chapters.layout]=vertical&amp;flashvars[chapters.thumbnailRotator]=false&amp;flashvars[streamSelector.plugin]=true&amp;flashvars[EmbedPlayer.SpinnerTarget]=videoHolder&amp;flashvars[dualScreen.plugin]=true&amp;&wid=1_7zd0fzee" width="640" height="396" allowfullscreen webkitallowfullscreen mozAllowFullScreen frameborder="0"></iframe>

5. Click Next.

6. If the media is blocked, click Allow.

7. Click Insert and then click Publish.

8. View the video in a browser.

9. Click the Full screen icon within the iFrame and observe that the media switches to full screen.

Brightspace Platform 10.6.4Fixed Issues

PRB0048672Previously, if you were using Brightspace Learning Environment with video content, the videos might not have displayed correctly in full screen mode in the Content tool.

Now, in the Content tool, you can view videos in full screen mode, as expected.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.4.9.

To reproduce this fix:

1. In Content, upload MP4 video files.

2. Attempt to play the videos in full screen mode.

3. Observe that the videos play in full screen mode.

PRB0052032Previously, when viewing the Completion Summary of an assignment submission folder linked to Content, users were able to see inactive users when groups/sections were selected.

Now, when viewing the Completion Summary of an assignment submissions folder linked to Content, inactive users do not appear when groups/sections are selected.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.6.1.

To reproduce this fix:

1. In a test course, create a group or section and an assignment submissions folder.

2. Enroll a user into the course and into the group/section.

3. View the Completion Summary of the assignment submission for the user.

4. At the organization level, deactivate the user.

5. In the course, view the Completion Summary of the assignment submission for the user. Select the user's group.

6. Observe that the user does not appear.

PRB0050711In some cases, the first item that should have appeared in the course schedule list when you clicked Load More did not appear as expected. For example, if 10 items appeared in the list before the Load More link, item 11 did not appear, and the list started at item 12.

Now, all upcoming course schedule items show up as expected when you click Load More.

Found in Brightspace platform 10.5.3.

To reproduce this fix:

1. Create a course with more topics than can be displayed on one page.

Brightspace Platform 10.6.4Fixed Issues

2. Navigate to Course Schedule > Full Schedule.

3. Note the last item that appears in the list.

4. Click Load More.

5. Observe that when you compare the list to either the database or Calendar events list, all items are displayed.

PRB0051843Previously, when you tried to update an existing content file that was stored in the Shared Files area, you were prompted to create a new file or overwrite the existing file instead of automatically updating the file.

Now, when you try to update an existing content file that is stored in the Shared Files area, you are prompted to save a copy of the file in your course files area or overwrite a shared file if you have the required permissions.

PRB0047770In an Adobe Connect Online Room, the Join link continues to display after the end date for the course has passed, and thus users can still access the room.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.3 SP14 and 10.4.7.

To reproduce this issue:

1. Create an Adobe Connect Online Room.

2. Once the end date/time has passed, go to the Online Rooms list page.

3. Observe that the Join link remains even though the room's end date has passed.

Intelligent Agents

PRB0052365When a course ends or is deleted, the Intelligent Agents in the course remain active and continue to send notifications to users.

As a workaround, set an end date for Intelligent Agents that is the same as the end date of the course.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.3.0 and 10.6.2.

To reproduce this issue:

1. Create an Intelligent Agent in a course and set it to run.

2. In the Org Unit Editor, search for the course and delete it.

3. Observe that the agent still runs and users continue to receive notifications.

Brightspace Learning Repository

PRB0046961If you try to add a file with a '+' character in the file name from Brightspace Learning Repository to a content topic, an error occurs. This is due to the '+' character being incorrectly encoded as '%20' or '%2B'.

As a workaround, for files in LOR that you want to add to Content, remove the '+' character from the file name.

Found in Brightspace Learning Repository 10.3.0 and 10.4.3.

To reproduce this issue:

1. Obtain a PDF with a file name that contains a '+' character.

2. Publish the file to a repository in Brightspace Learning Repository.

3. Go to Content and create a topic by adding an object from LOR.

Brightspace Platform 10.6.4Known Issues

4. Do one of the following:

If you select Dynamic Link to Newest Version, you can preview the file in the document viewer. However, when you try to open the file, observe a 404 error and a redirect.

If you select Copy as Content, you can preview the file in the document viewer. However, when you try to open the file, observe an error saying the file cannot be found.

PRB0052358In the Content tool, when you try to publish courses with about 100 topics to Brightspace Learning Repository, and select the Publish in background option, you might encounter a timeout error.

Found in Brightspace Learning Repository 10.3.0.

To reproduce this issue:

1. In Brightspace Learning Environment, navigate to the Content area of a course.

2. In the Table of Contents drop-down menu, select Publish to LOR.

3. Select Publish in Background.

4. Finish the process (skip the metadata screen as it is irrelevant in this case).

5. After some time, check on the status of the publishing process.

6. Observe the timeout error.

Navigation and Themes

PRB0052446 (Daylight)Some of the navbar functionality is missing or not as expected for Brightspace Daylight on mobile devices. Links in the mobile navbar do not work on iPhone, Course Selector and the Admin Tools menu are not available in the mobile slide out menu, and link groups aren’t active in the mobile slide out menu.

Found in Brightspace platform 10.6.3.

PRB0052444 (Daylight)Some of the navbar configuration and theme support is not as expected for Brightspace Daylight. When editing links on the navbar, the links display in an order that might be difficult to follow, and when editing the theme, the color of the header stripe at the top of the navbar cannot be changed (it can be changed under the minibar settings, instead).

Brightspace Platform 10.6.4Known Issues

PRB0052443 (Daylight)There are some limitations in navbar functionality for Brightspace Daylight:

When the width of all of the links in the navbar is more than the width of the screen, some links might not display.

When a drop-down menu is longer than the page length on pages without a scroll bar, some menu items might not display.

Course Selector does not display in the organization level navbar and must be accessed from a course level navbar (but you can access courses using homepage widgets).

The user menu does not currently indicate if impersonation or role switch is taking place unless the menu is expanded.

Quizzes

PRB0052371Embedded videos cannot be viewed in full screen mode within a quiz.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.5.4.

PRB0052004If quiz scores contain decimal values, the final score might not be calculated accurately.

As a workaround, use integer values for quiz scores rather than using decimal values.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.3.0.

To reproduce this issue:

1. In Brightspace Learning Environment, create a quiz with at least three long answer questions worth one point each.

2. Impersonate a user and take the quiz.

3. Impersonate an instructor, and grade the quiz attempt.

4. Set the question score for all 3 questions to 0.8.

5. Grade one question and observe that the Final Score is calculated accurately and displayed as 0.8.

6. Grade the second question and observe that the Final Score is calculated accurately and displayed as 1.6.

7. Grade the third question and observe that the Final Score is displayed as 2.4000000000000004.

PRB0050093A user with an IP address that is supposed to be restricted from accessing a quiz might still be able to access the quiz.

4. Observe that any IP that starts with this IP address is able to gain access to the quiz, for example (192.168.1.10, 192.168.1.20).

Rubrics

PRB0051773In some cases, if you have the Dialogs option selected in Account Settings, and in a rubric you enter a points value and click Overwrite or Cancel, the window might become unresponsive.

As a workaround, select the Pop-ups option (instead of Dialogs) in Account Settings.

Found in Brightspace Learning Environment 10.5.7.

To reproduce this issue:

1. In a course in Brightspace Learning Environment, create an analytic rubric with the Scoring Method set to Custom Points.

2. Create an assignment submission folder.

3. Associate the rubric to the submission folder.

4. Enroll a learner in the course and impersonate them.

5. Submit a file to the submission folder.

6. As an administrator or instructor, access Account Settings and under Dialog Setting, ensure Dialogs is selected.

7. Still as an administrator or instructor, go to the submission folder.

8. Click the file link to evaluate the learner's submission.

9. Click the associated rubric.

10. Manually enter a score for one of the criteria.

11. Save the feedback and close the rubric.

12. Edit the rubric and click a level to override the score you entered manually.

13. In the confirmation dialog, click Cancel.
