Tips for Developing the Leader within You
Do you want to be a leader?
Neuroscience creates opportunities to develop your leadership intangibles
Learning Thru Reflection = Power
Keep a Learning Journal and record a learning every day
Schedule time every day just to reflect
• What did I learn about myself?
• What are the implications?
• Who can I share it with?
Set-up a diverse, but safe group of others to share ideas
Identify “practical experiments” to try something new – 1 per week
Build Your Purpose
Begin by completing the statement: I am great because I…
1. Brain storm a list of all of the possible answers to this question
2. Highlight the “power” words or phrases from your list 3. Form these power words or phrases into 1-3 sentences
a) No more than 300 characters b) Focus on power words
4. Read it out loud a) Excited? – you have your purpose b) If not – keep writing
Tips for Building Consensus
• Purpose Story: Create a compelling story about your purpose – why me? Why us? Why now?
• Know your audience: Create a map of other people you want to work with to achieve your purpose – Ask: “What value does the purpose create for them?” – Ask: “What role do I want them to play?”
• Connect: Meet with them to discuss your purpose – Be “present” – Listen and drive – a difficult balance to hold
Tips for Preparing for Action Preparation creates influence
• IT IS NOT - “Ready-Fire-Aim” or “Ready-Aim-Aim- Aim…”
• IT IS - Systematic preparation of self and others to achieve greatness
Determine how much planning and what type of planning is appropriate • Back of the napkin or formal process – time and benefit
trade-offs • Set tangible, actionable objectives • Check to make sure all of your colleagues align with the
objectives
Create A Personal Culture
• What is a personal “culture?” – Surrounding yourself with good people
matters – This is a conscious process that takes
courage
• Proactively build your surrounding “culture” – Survey your environment – Focus first on developing your current
bright spots – Develop a plan for reducing the influence of
your “black holes”
Live in Flow
Occurs when you have done all of the previous work
Achieving a magical state where everything comes together – the athletic
“zone” This is the payoff – you are successful
and…you feel great
