When you think about it the num-

ber o times we are expected to

sit still and keep quiet ar out-

number those moments when we are told

to shout, sing, dance, or splash paint withjoyul abandon.

o Winnie am, Founder and Director o

    Artspace (www.artspaceorchildren.com)

thats an imbalance we need to correct, be-

cause the lessons kids learn through exu-

berant artistic expression will carry them

    and society orward.

What were nding in the 21st Century is

that people who bring creativity and inno-

vation to their work and to their lie are the

ones that really stand out in the world, she

told Student Success. I think art is really

what nurtures those aspects o our charac-

ter. It really is valuable to society.

schools in America and South Arica over the previous

our years, Dustin thought LFAS was going to be just

another name added to the list, he wrote in a posting to

the schools Blue Dog Press (lasbluedog.com).

He couldnt have been more pleasantly amazed at how

wrong that assessment would turn out. Although he

doesnt see himsel pursuing a career in the arts, hav-

ing experienced the vibrant and sometimes outrightwhacky environment at LFAS has widened his eyes

where else would you be in jeopardy o getting tram-

pled by dance students running down the halls herding

    hula-hoops and exercise balls.

Now, even tough I am ar more academically inclined

then I am artistic and creative, the school has given so

much to me, he wrote. Having had the opportunities

to both get up on the stage in drama and write in cre-

ative writing I have been given a good perspective o

    lie.

He goes on to describe the importance o doing what

you love and creating something that you want to share

with others, even i the endeavour requires ups and

downs rom adrenaline rushes, to the stress and pres-

sure o rehearsals, to the emptiness elt right aer the

    nal perormance.

What he is expressing Winnie calls the transorma-

tive power o the arts. She cites the example o summer

camps where students engage in paired activities thatis, exploration o two arts disciplines instead o strictly

ocusing on rst choices. When kids explore artistic

modes outside the box o their ortes they oen discov-

er talents and strengths they didnt know were in them.

Whats important is to ocus on the process, not the

product Winnie said. Dont look at drama as a nished

play with set roles; see it as an opportunity to draw out

the unique voices o students. aking that approach

has made all the diference or children who never

thought they would ever join a drama class, she said.

Its never too early to begin. Our philosophy is re-

ally ounded on the belie that when children express

themselves creatively through artistic endeavours they

develop cognitively, socially and physically, she said.

Six months! Obviously at six months old were not ex-

pecting the children to sing along, Winnie explained o

the schools Song & Movement program. But research

shows that when inants are immersed in an environ-

ment rich with language and sound their cognitive de-

    velopment is enhanced.

Te experience o art in inancy can last a lietime.

Teyre so open! Winnie said o the youngest students.Teyre sponges at that age; theyre not judging their

experiences on a product, theyre really judging their

    experience based on a process.

Just as importantly, parents are learning, too, and bond-

ing with their children through art. Really, ultimate-

ly one o the reasons we have early childhood classes

where parents are involved is because it gives parents

some tools and resources or new ways to interact with

their children that are really positive and mutually ben-

    ecial, Winnie said.

She puts a heavy emphasis on positive. Yes, kids go to

art school to learn techniques and improve as painters,

actors, dancers, musicians, writers But encourage-

ment especially rom parents is key. Let the teachers

nudge your child through the ever widening skill set

rom bright-eyed dabbler to technically procient artist

she advises i thats where your child wants to go. Te

most important job or parents is to admire, listen and

honour their childrens eforts. We tend to dampen kids artistic spirit based on our

own preconceptions and even ears. Dont do that, Win-

nie cautions. Be open. Its a real eye-opener or parents

to experience what a two-year old can do in an art class,

    she said.v
