Reminders …

● Use the UGDSB app to stay up to date with all the activities and events at Brisbane. Please go to the app

store and search Upper Grand District School Board. Schools with the most usage will win a free

Chromebook!!

 Climate Survey

Gr 4 – 12 students, staff & parents please complete our 2018 School Climate Survey to inform us of how we can

improve our school. The link is: http://bit.ly/UGclimatesurvey2018

Check out this video to understand why your answers are important https://www.wevideo.com/view/1066200581  #equity #accessibility #safety #respect

EQAO Dates Gr 3 and 6 We have our students writing EQAO testing from May 22-June 4. Please have students at school on time and avoid making appointments if possible to help ensure they are able to fully participate. Our date for scribe training (recording student answers on paper) is scheduled on May 9th from 9:15-10:30 in the library . If you are able to help out please contact Mrs. Robertson.

School Parking Lot A reminder that students are strongly encouraged to be on the bus as there is very limited parking at the school. The school is designated as a bus community. We recognize this may not always be possible so if you must pick up your child(ren), please do so quickly to make space for other parents. Kindergarten students can be picked up at 3:15 pm to help with staggering pick up. Also, a few other reminders:

● Please watch car doors when opening and closing the doors as we have had some door dings.  ● Please do not park in or block accessibility parking spots, even if it’s just a quick drop off. We have families

and students that need to use these spots. ● Please only park in designated parking spots to help keep our parking lot safe for our families and to keep

the traffic moving.

Clubs and Activities at Brisbane Forest of Reading Each week a number of our grade 3-6 students have been meeting in the Library to discuss the great books they have been reading. Students read from three categories: Fiction, Non-fiction and Express. Students must read, review, and conference about a minimum 5 books in order to participate in a province-wide vote in April. The Silver Birch reading program supports our efforts to make students avid readers and writers. Thank you to School Council and to

Brisbane parents for the purchase of the books, and for meeting with students each week to foster a love of reading! Many thanks to Mme Halpin for coordinating this wonderful program and to her team of dedicated volunteers!

Reading Clubs-Boys’ & Girls’

We also have our Boys’ and Girls’ reading clubs every week in the library for students from grades 1-6. Students have the opportunity to read a variety of fun and engaging books in French and English. Thank you to Mr. Koch for running this program.

Everyone’s a Reader Program

Are you interested in getting involved in your school community? We are currently recruiting additional volunteers to support the Everyone's a Reader tutoring program. Our schedule and support materials enable us to provide support for up to 30 possible blocks of 100 minutes each, during any given week. We are currently operating with just over 1/3 of the possible capacity. We have wonderful volunteers for some of the blocks, but the more volunteers we have, the greater number of students we can support. If you have 100 minutes to share, and would like to be trained and get involved with this, please contact Mme Schefter by email, [email protected] or by calling the school at ext. 422 at the school. Join our team, and empower kids!

Science Club Science is a field filled with exciting subjects and amazing opportunities for exploration and developing curiosity. In the Science Club, students do a combination of physical experiments and idea gathering (via videos online) to expand their scientific knowledge and explore the world around them. Thank you to M. Dyke for running this program for our students.

Equity Committee

This month we focused on recognizing the Chinese New Year and talked about the significance of Black History                                   Month. We also had spiritualist Jan Sherman come into our school to work with grade 5/6 classes on drumming                                     circles. Students had an opportunity to create indigenous art pieces reflecting the spirit of the moon.   Using Dance to Communicate In Dance, Ms. Carey’s classes talked about how First Nations people use dance and music to come together and celebrate, as well as pass on stories and legends. Student took photos from nature, while working together, and communicated the story that the nature photo could be telling using body movements.

Ready-Set-Go Program Ready-Set-Go is an 8 week play-based program held in each local school and is for any child who is entering JK in September, 2018. Every child benefits from experience and feeling relaxed in their environment. So if your child needs a little extra time warming up to the idea of attending school, sign them up for Ready-Set-Go!   Ready-Set-Go is a small group program consisting of 10 children and two staff. The goal is to have children feel comfortable in their new school environment before they start school. Registered families will drop-off their child for one hour to participate in activities that relate to a new story each week. They will visit different areas of the school, meet teachers, meet their classmates, and do what they do best- learn through play.   To register your child in the Ready-Set-Go program, you must first register him/her for Junior Kindergarten in the school they will attend and then you must call Angela Mathers at EWCS, 519-833-9696 ext. 227. We anticipate the program will fill up quickly and space is limited.

Live Free Day - Friday Mar 2nd  Friday, March 2nd is Help Kids Live Free from Hunger Day. We are challenging students to give up something for one day that they may take for granted, like chocolate, TV or iPad time. Students are encouraged to bring a Toonie into school to donate to the Live Free Campaign as a symbol of what they are living free of. Donations support our own nutrition program in feeding hungry children.  Thanks for your continued support,  The Healthy Snack Warriors!
