Standard 9 Meta Reflection: Cultural SensitivityEstablishes a culturally inclusive learning climate that facilitates academic engagement and success for all students.
I met Standard 9: Cultural Sensitivity by teaching in another country. My husband
and I taught in a Children’s home in Chiang Mai, Thailand for one year. In that year, we
had to be culturally sensitive to Thai customs. We needed to learn Thai ways, in order to
respect the students and staff. We learned not to talk at the lunch tables, to use both
hands when eating, to decrease discussion time in class and to enforce strict respect of
elders. In the picture above, students line up respectfully before a P.E. class; hands down,
facing forward, in grade level lines and no talking.
I also met Standard 9 by providing a paper on my preferred teaching models. The
attachment focuses on my experience as a teacher and how the Constructivism and Inquiry-
Based Learning models influences my teaching as well as my student’s wellbeing and
academic achievement. For further information on how Constructivism and Inquiry-Based
Learning facilitates academic engagement in my classroom, see the attachment.
