DESCRIPTION
The official programme handed out to attendees of the Games Awards and BAFTA’s Inside Games event, both held at the Tobacco Dock in London on 12 March. Six variant covers were produced, each one representing a game nominated in the Best Game category. This cover showcases The Last Of Us.
Citation preview
A warm welcome to the British Academy Games Awards.
The past year in games has been one of the most memorable yet, from record-breaking releases to the launch of the next gen consoles. We’ve witnessed the growing confidence of an industry whose global success has dominated the headlines and, with advances in mobile technology, so much of our spare time, too.
With its Games Awards, BAFTA recognises the individuals and teams behind the most groundbreaking, technologically-advanced and genuinely inspirational work ever to make it to screen. Congratulations to all of the nominees and to Rockstar Games, the deserving recipient of this year’s Fellowship.
Today is an important day for us, for reasons not entirely related to the Awards. Inside Games, our new public event, took place here at the Tobacco Dock earlier in the day, and it’s a first for BAFTA – bringing new games from the world’s biggest studios to the hands of gamers, alongside a series of developer talks and an independent games showcase. With tickets also available to buy for the ceremony, we’ve never brought the public so close to the industry and this, we hope, will spark a greater understanding and appreciation of your work.
BAFTA isn’t just about awards. Today we re-launch our Young Game Designers competition, with online resources and workshops around the country enabling 11 to 16-year-olds to learn from the professionals while producing their own work. Also, Give Something Back is our industry campaign supporting young people, regardless of background, which asks for a small amount of your time, a work placement at your company or a donation. Your contribution will support BAFTA’s year-round learning programme and, by extension, safeguard the industry’s future; visit bafta.org for more information.
Thank you to the BAFTA team, particularly Kelly Smith and Clare Brown, and our wonderful host, Dara O Briain. My thanks, as always, to the BAFTA juries and the Games Committee, whose vision is expertly focused by its Chairman, Harvey Elliott.
I wish you all a wonderful evening.

THE NOMINATIONS 19
Together with their extended development and publishing teams, Sam and Dan Houser, along with Leslie Benzies and Aaron Garbut, have helped define the path of the entire medium into the
cultural mainstream with more than a decade’s worth of innovative digital entertainment.
When Rockstar Games was founded in December 1998 by the Houser brothers, it had that most vital of elements for success already in the bag: a bona fide hit under its belt. Released in 1997 by the now defunct BMG Interactive and developed by DMA Design (now Rockstar North, headed up by Benzies and art director Garbut), Grand Theft Auto seemed destined to cause a stir, whether for its controversial content (which had the right-wing media up in arms) or for its provocative and mature approach to gaming.
Despite a protracted development process (during which it was almost pulled numerous times), the game was a big hit on its release, hitting the number one spot in the UK charts. The rest, of course, is history, with GTA spawning one of the biggest and most successful games franchises of all time. The GTA series has sold-in more than 180 million copies worldwide; with in excess of 32 million of those coming from its most recent iteration, the Best Game-nominated Grand Theft Auto V.
But to put Rockstar Games’ success down to one series does the company, now a high-end publishing division of Take-Two Interactive, a disservice. With an impressive
roster of bestsellers and award-winners on its books, including the Max Payne series, LA Noire, The Warriors, Bully (aka Canis Canem Edit), the Midnight Club series and the Red Dead series, Rockstar continues to push the boundaries of gaming, and in particular storytelling.
While each game brings its own charms – riding through the stunning vistas of Red Dead Redemption to the stirring music of Bill Elm and Woody Jackson is surely a highlight of anyone’s gaming experiences – and numerous technical innovations (most notably GTAIII, which brought the top-down mission-based sandbox game into glorious and fluid 3D), it was Rockstar’s overall approach that proved to be the game-changer. No longer was the medium the purview of children, hidden away in their darkened bedrooms, jumping on the back of turtles (as fun as that
can be); thanks in large part to Rockstar, adult gamers now had a legitimate reason to boot up their consoles and PCs.
Rockstar president Sam Houser has repeatedly affirmed that the company’s mantra was to create games that would rival film for mature storytelling, by pushing the boundaries of the art form with provocative, intelligent interactive experiences aimed at a grown-up audience. By doing so, Rockstar has inevitably drawn controversy with both the media and governmental bodies.

over these years have inspired a generation of game developers to raise the bar in every aspect of development, from design and mechanics, through to storytelling, cinematics and audio immersion. And, in the process, creating games that compete so profoundly on a global stage not just in games, but across all entertainment media.”
The story doesn’t end here either. The Rockstar
juggernaut will continue to drive the games industry forward. As Houser told trade publication MCV in 2008: “We are only scratching at the surface of games’ potential as a creative medium.” Six years on and with new technology continuing to push the art form ever forwards, it’s hard to disagree this isn’t still the case.
The company has more than weathered the storm, with the recent success of GTAV simply rubber-stamping its ambitions for the medium.
“Gamers are growing up,” Houser told The Sunday Times Culture Magazine in 2013, “though we are still 10–20 years from all people in governance or authority understanding that it’s the same as any other art form and should not be singled out. We’re evolving. These kinds of things don’t happen overnight.”
That this evolution in storytelling is matched by immersive gameplay, inspired technical innovations and great commercial success underlines why Rockstar deserves to be presented with this year’s Fellowship.
“It is hugely exciting to be able to recognise the amazing contribution made by Rockstar to the industry over the past 16 years,” says Harvey Elliott, chair of the BAFTA Games Committee. “The creativity and passion exhibited by the Rockstar teams

35NEW TALENT INIT IATIVES
Tonight’s event is about celebrating the year’s best games and industry practitioners, but BAFTA does much more than reward the best of the best. In a year round programme of events and initiatives, BAFTA
seeks to discover and inspire new talent, while also championing creative excellence in emerging stars. Identifying, engaging and supporting the next generation of potential BAFTA winners is essential to enriching the diversity, vibrancy and creativity of the industry.
But it’s not something we can do on our own. Two of our key new and emerging talent initiatives for 2014, BAFTA’s Young Game Designers (the competition launched today) and Breakthrough Brits (applications open 2 April), need the support of the industry.
While Young Game Designers (YGD) is first and foremost a competition for 11 to 16-year-olds to create a game of their own – and a very popular one, too, with more than 1,000 young people engaged – it offers much more than that. From offering exclusive behind-the-scenes video content to hosting workshops around the country, YGD has evolved into the premier initiative in the UK for inspiring a new generation of game-making talent to consider a career in a field they may not have dreamt
was attainable. We are grateful to all of the industry partners who make the initiative possible, so if your company isn’t already engaged with this fantastic initiative, we urge you to get on board.
From the new to the aspiring. In 2013, we launched Breakthrough Brits with the express aim of championing creative individuals who may not be household names yet but have already shown incredible promise. This initiative offers them an opportunity to reach their full potential, with year-round mentorship, career guidance and vital contact introductions. For this initiative to succeed, we need the support of the industry – so if you have spotted any bright new talents, please do act as their referee and encourage them to put themselves forward.
By supporting BAFTA, you’re supporting the industry.
For more details on supporting YGD or entering Breakthrough Brits, visit: www.bafta.org
Inspiring, discovering and encouraging new and emerging talent is at the heart of what we do at BAFTA. But we can’t do it alone…

BRITISH ACADEMY GAMES AWARDS IN 2O1440
BAFTA’s first ever pre-Awards event, Inside Games, presents hands-on play with the best and hottest new titles the industry has to offer. Game on!
Inside Games is a unique event in BAFTA’s history: it’s the first time we’ve ever laid on a public event before one of our Awards ceremonies. And what an event! Offering hands-on experience with some of the most exciting games of 2014 from the
world’s biggest studios, many of them before their official release date, Inside Games is an unforgettable experience.
But enough of the hyperbole – here’s what’s on show at Inside Games.
First off, a wealth of stunning games are available to play, from Titanfall, Electronic Arts’ thrilling multiplayer first person shooter, to Square Enix’s compelling supernatural thriller, Murdered: Soul Suspect. There’s plenty of other next generation action available too, from Sony Computer Entertainment’s open world adventure for the PlayStation 4, inFAMOUS: Second Son (the third in the popular series),
