INTRODUCTION

Centrally situated in the Midlands at the University of Wolverhampton, Walsall Campus, it provides full-time athletes a world-class performance environment with a state-of-the-art dojo, strength and conditioning, sports science, sports medicine, educational opportunities and accommodation all on one site.

At the heart of the centre is a new dedicated purpose-built dojo, where a performance team of world-class coaches and support staff with experience at the highest level, will deliver individual periodised training programmes to Great Britain’s most talented junior, transition and senior athletes. Strength and conditioning, integrated with the judo programme and sports science/sports medicine support ensures that the athlete’s all-round needs are met, whilst a strong network of local clubs ensure that athletes in the centre have access to quality randori on a daily basis.

Alongside a full-time judo programme, the centre offers a range of optional educational pathways from 16 years, including the British Judo Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence and numerous degree courses.

The British Judo Centre of Excellence provides a place for our athletes and coaches to learn and share knowledge and experiences.

FACILITIES

As well as a mat side conditioning area, the centre contains an all-new strength and conditioning suite with cutting-edge equipment and a full-time strength and conditioning coach.

The centre contains dedicated sports massage and physiotherapy rooms with further sports science laboratories located adjacent to the dojo.

Other sports facilities are available on the university campus including a swimming pool – ideal for conditioning and rehabilitation – and a synthetic outdoor athletics track.

The centre provides residential opportunities with dedicated accommodation, in an ideal location

on site adjacent to the dojo. Modern and secure, the accommodation comprises en-suite single rooms with shared dining areas and free wi-fi internet access. A range of additional services are available including on-site shops, catering, laundrette and leisure facilities.

The British Judo Centre of Excellence provides one of the best high-performance judo environments in Europe. Housing two Olympic size 10m x 10m contest areas, the sprung floor dojo contains a state-of-the-art and fully interactive performance analysis system providing instant feedback on the dojos large screens.

Some of the best judo coaches in the country are based at the centre including the Performance Director, Great Britain Lead Coaches, England Lead Coach and two full-time Centre of Excellence coaches. This is complimented by regular sessions from guest coaches, ensuring that both athletes and coaches are constantly learning and developing.

The centre provides state-of-the-art performance analysis facilities for athletes and boasts a full-time Performance Analyst based on site.

Cutting edge sports science and sports medicine services will provide support, testing and monitoring for athletes. Each individual athlete benefits from a strength and conditioning and medical screening process, allow the coaching team to create and implement an individual periodised training programme aligned with the performance targets of their judo programme to enable the athlete to reach their full potential.

A range of optional further and higher education opportunities are on offer from the ages of 16 plus. These include the two-year Judo Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence for those aged 16-18, a Foundation Degree in Sport and Exercise, a wide selection of Undergraduate Degrees across the university’s eight academic schools and post graduate courses for those aged 21 and above. These are complemented by professional qualifications and short courses which operate throughout the year.

By car: leave the M6 at Junction 9 and take the A461 Bescott Road towards Walsall. Get into the right hand lane and follow the right for of A4148 signposted Birmingham. Stay on the Broadway until turning off left at Magdalende Road (for sports visitors) or continuing to the next roundabout and taking the first exit on to Birmingham Road, left onto Jesson Road and left again onto Gorway Road (for general visitors). Satnav location is WS1 3BD.

By bus: the number 51 bus takes you from the Walsall bus station to Jesson Road near the Campus.

By train: Walsall station is on the Wolverhampton, Stafford and Birmingham lines. From Walsall station, you can either take a taxi or walk the short distance to the bus station, from where you can get a number 51 bus as above.
