    ` Directed by Shane Meadows

    ` Budget - 1,500,000

` Gross After Last Weekend- 1,315,593

` Due to the budget of the film they was many factors which made it clear, that theyhad a low budget, the locations of the film were very rundown and were filmed in reallocations this was cheap to do and gives more realism towards the film. The budgetalso affects the quality of the filming due to it being very grainy, this does give the filma gritty and rough effect. They also have no artificial lighting and they would have tofilm with real lighting due to them not having enough money to buy the equipment, this also brings more realism to the film.

` The budget has also effected the actors, many of them are unknown this would bedown the producer not being able to get well known actors because they would takeup most of the budget.

` They also could have no well known music but through synergy they can ask theartist if they can use there material in the film.

` The way to increase the size of the audience can be downto how you distribute, this could be down to the amount ofcopys they distribute in the country, it can also be down tothe amount of countrys they distribute in.

` Most of the countrys are European this could be down to

the film appealing to them because they want to see theharsh reality of British working class life. This wouldincrease the size of the audience.

` It was also only partially distributed in the USA, as you cansee that it was limited release due to the lack of appeal thefilm has on the public. This may be down to the fact that

they dont agree of controversial films, and are moreinclined to watch Hollywood films.

` Some distributors were restricted to distributing in

some countrys due to the controversial viewsshown.

` In conclusion to increase the amount of audienceby distributing would be to distribute in countrys

were the film would appeal to them eg. In France

they have broader genre of films. The more

distributers, the more countrys that could becovered and will increase the audience.

  • 8/7/2019 British Social Realism Institution, Audience and

    11/21

` They are many home platforms to watch films on the main and legalone is to by the film on dvd, the positive for is that you own your owncopy is that your free to watch it any time at your own leisure. Thequality of the film will be much better if you watch it on dvd, it evenlooks better if u watch it on Blu-ray this means the film is seen in hd andmakes for a more enjoyable film, the downsides to this is that it costs

twice as much as a dvd copy and a hd TV is needed plus a Blu-rayplayer which altogether is very expensive. But you do have to paymany people well see this as a negative due to watching it online isfree. Another way of home exhibition is illegal sites such as torrentswhich let you live stream the movie, the positives of this is that you canwatch the film before it is released on dvd or in England due to it beingreleased first in America, it is also free and doesnt cost moneywatching it. The down side of this is that the film quality maybe poor, and not be same as dvd. Another downside is the fact it is illegal butdue to so many people doing it, it is hard to charge someone with theoffence, this also impacts on the films revenue due to you watching thefilm and not paying to do so will mean the company is loosing money. And due to This Is England being a independent film they would suffera lot.

` This is England has wide appeal in terms of age. As it is set inthe past, and older audience, who will remember the time periodand will be able to relate to the things happening in the film, aswell as the type of people, the themes, clothes and life style. Itwill also appeal to the younger audience as they may not be ableto relate to the time but they will still be able to comparethemselves with the characters in the film and relate to at leastone of them. They will also be interested in England's history andfinding out what it was like back in the day and compare it tohow it is now, and maybe seeing what their parent or relativeslife was like at the age they are now. Although it is still notcreating a mainstream audience appeal they are covering a

wider range of audience by being able to appeal to nearly allages: 15 to 60/70 maybe.

` This Is England will appeal to both genders, as it hasmixed characters and although boys and girls who didnot live through that time they will be able to comparetheir gender back then to the way they are now. Also,

the older generation, both genders, can relate to thefilm and the characters in it and reminisce on how itwas back then and how things have changed.Although it may slightly appeal to boys, that little bitmore, due to some of the violence in the film that the

younger generation of girls may not appeal to asmuch.

` In terms of location, it will most likely be the older

generation of the audience that it appeals to moreas they will maybe recognise the areas that the

film is shot in and the sort of things going onaround those areas at the time. The younger

audience will watch and maybe learn from thelocation, once again comparing between then and

    now.

` The majority of the cast are white, with the exception of thecharacter Milky who is black. This gives a mixed ethnicityaudience. It gives them both a chance to see the other sideof the story, as in the time the film was set there was a lotof racial discrimination happening. People who livedthrough this will watch it and look back, noticing how thingshave change and remembering how things used to be. Thismay have an effect on, who were the minority race at thetime, of black ethnicity, but not so much on the white raceas they were majority. The younger audience can watch

and learn from this, and see how things were different backthen and how society has grown from it.

` Interests, creates a variety of audience. Firstly, thepeople who can relate to the time and characters asthey went through the same things and therefore, once, hared the same interested, alcohol, sex anddrugs and can look back and see how their interests

have changed. Then there is the younger audiencewho can compare interests and see how teenagersinterests have changed over the years, or may havenot. They can watch and see how different they are topeople in that day and age or can sit and watch and

realise that they are quite similar, gaining arelationship with the characters.

` This Is England will appear more to the lower class, working and under, as mostBritish Social Realism films do. This is due to the harsh view on life that you donot get in a Hollywood film, things like sex, drugs, alcohol, themes and lifestylethat is not all happy days and is related to more by the working and under classthan any other class. This means that audience appeal will be mainly working orunder class, although someone of a higher, for example. Middle class, maywant to watch it to see how the other side live and their lifestyle. This could be

people who are now middle class and interested in it or people, who in that timewhere of a higher class than the characters and want to see how their life pansout, different to their own. People who lived through the time This Is England isfilmed, may relate to this as they can compare themselves to how they wherethen and what they have achieved now, if they are still stuck in that lifestyle orthey have bettered themselves and came out of it. Younger people who watchthe film can compare their working class lifestyle as a teenager to thecharacters lifestyle and see how it has changed or stayed the same. Middle

class can also do this, comparing how much better their life is compared to thelives of the characters.

    Marketing StrategiesMarketing Strategies

To help market there film, the creators of This Is England

used several techniques to create audience awareness. They sued posters as a use of marketing. These were good

as they, both, set the scene and introduce the characters so

that the audience can get a feel of the film before deciding if

they want to see it or not.

` Due to New Media Technology, website were made to promote the film.Shane meadows, the creator of This Is England, had made his ownwebsite that people, and also already fans of his work were available toview at any time and could therefore go and take a preview at the filmto find out what it was about and see whether they would want to watchit.

` This Is England also made their very won website, all about the film, sothat once again the audience that were interested could go on and findout more about the film before they saw it and could find details aboutthe cast, the narrative and have access to reviews and other opinionsthat would encourage them to watch the film.

` Viral marketing is a good marketing technique as they are available atany time, any place and due to new media technology people can

access them on laptops, phones, iPods and other forms of technology, making it easier to get hold of and ensuring more people will becomeaware of the film.

` Being a film 4 film, puts This Is England at an advantage as only acertain audience will view it, but being connected with channel 4 putsthem at an advantage as their films can be shown on that channel. ThisIs England was shown on Channel 4, this increased audienceawareness and due to almost everyone in the having TV, even if its justthe terrestrial channels means that they are now able to watch This Is

England. This worked well for Shane meadows, as his film may not ofbeen as popular had it not been shown on channel 4, because not asmany people would have been aware of it.

` Also, to raise audience awareness for the sequel This Is England 86,This Is England, was shown again on Channel 4 so that people couldwatch it if they had missed it or wanted to watch it again. This onceagain made te audience more aware of the film, and got a bigger

audience as more people were aware of it that may have missed itbefore or not even known about the film and also helping in the size ofaudience interested in This Is England 86.
