British South Africa Police: Roll of Honour (War Casualties Division) Members Killed in Action (KIA) and Killed on Active Service (KOAS) Compiled by Andrew Field (8646) In the history of a force that existed for seventy years, and whose members were involved in wars, campaigns and, on occasions, rather indistinct affrays in many parts of Africa and beyond, there is bound to be a blurring of the lines of fact, and gaps in the accumulation of knowledge. With history, the gleaning of fresh facts is a continuing and exciting series of circumstances. This Roll of Honour is based on available information and the facts as known at November 2013, supported by a number of sources and rules. In compiling the roll, the following criteria guided the author. Those listed in the roll comprise any attested regular or reserve member of the British South Africa Police, before 31 July 19801 who was:

• killed in active combat or while on specific defensive duties (i.e. during a contact, ambush, landmine, or station attack) by direct or indirect offensive enemy action (generally classified as ‘killed in action’ - KIA);

• abducted and murdered by enemy forces, in any operational area, in consequence of their association with the British South Africa Police, irrespective of their duty status at the time, but includes regular members of the force who lost their lives in terrorist attacks on civilian airliners; and those

• died while in active combat or defensive roles (which shall exclude civilian police duties) as a result of unforeseen incidents (i.e. friendly fire, vehicle or shooting accident – by and largely classified as ‘killed on active service’ – KOAS).

The compiler continues to research and delve into the lives surrounding the names listed, as well as seeking any additional information. Such information or updating, observing the above criteria, will be published on the British South Africa Police Regimental Association website. The list does not include deaths occuring in service of policemen in their civilian role, nor does it include war deaths of those officers and men who served in the predecessor forces, or who will killed during the rebellions, the Anglo-Boer War, or other conflict before the formation of the British South Africa Police. The roll lists those honoured by surname, first name/s, force number, attestation month, date and place of birth, rank at time of death, unit, circumstances, date and place of demise where known, and obituary references.

British South Africa Police: Roll of Honour (Civilian Police Duty Division) Members Killed in the line of Police Duty (KOPD) and Died while on Police Duty (DOPD) Compiled by Andrew Field (8646) This Roll of Honour is based on available information concerning those members of the BSA Police who died while serving their country in their line of duty as civilian policemen and women. Little or no recognition has previously been given to this core of men and women. Their sacrifice was no less than those killed during the military conflicts in which the BSA Police became embroiled and for which they are honoured. The Roll of Honour (War Division) had been compiled to sit alongside those rolls of honour comprising the Army, Airforce and Internal Affairs war dead. The BSA Police was unique in some respects in so far as many gave their lives while performing in the line of duty outside the war/para-military operations, as civilian policemen and women. In compiling the civilian roll, the following criteria guided the author. Those listed in the roll comprise any attested regular or reserve member of the British South Africa Police, on or before 31 July 19802, who was:

• killed while performing, or in connection with, his or her duty in the civilian role of a policeman or women including police vehicle or shooting accidents (generally classified as ‘killed in the line of police duties’ - KOPD);

• murdered by criminals (other than enemy forces, in any operational area), in consequence of their association with the British South Africa Police; and those who

• died while on duty (which shall exclude war or operational police duties) as a result of unforeseen causes (i.e. and sudden death through illness – by and largely classified as ‘died while on police duty’ – DOPD).

We have added to this roll of honour those former members of the BSA Police who continued to serve after 31 July 1980 and who gave their lives in service to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, particularly in defending the new nation against dissident activity following the war. The listing presented is far from complete and is presented at this stage in an iterative process to allow those who can contribute to the existing knowledge of the author. If you have any knowledge of a member of the BSA Police who was killed or who died while on duty outside the war or operational area, while performing in their civilian roles as policemen and women. There is sometimes a grey area in defining between the two (war and civilian) rolls in many cases.
