Independent tyre retailers will be the focus of a membership recruitment drive by the Point S(UK) buying and marketing group at this October’s Brityrex International show in Manchester.

Point S (UK) is the recently announced alliance between the powerful French Point S group andUK Tyres, the network of 13 independent retailers which has signed up to become the British armof the Point S group.

Point S currently operates in 20 European countries and has more than 1,900 independently-owned tyre retail outlets in membership and sales of over 11 million tyres per year.

“The Point S offer is highly attractive to independent tyre retailers as it gives them the benefitsof enormous buying power and national marketing strength without having to compromise theindependence which is their greatest strength,” says Charles Sunderland, co-director of UK Tyresand one of the negotiating team that reached the agreement with Point S Development.

UK Tyres currently has 13 member companies with a combined total 56 retail outlets but Sunderland is confident that figure willgrow quickly towards the 100 member companies targeted over the next 12 months.

“Brityrex is the perfect opportunity to take the Point S message into the marketplace and speak to dealers about the benefits it canbring to their businesses. With the added attraction of the NTDA dinner taking place during the show we’re very confident that wewill start to make inroads into our membership target as a result of exhibiting in Manchester,” adds Charles Sunderland.

Recent tests carried out by the HSE (Health & Safety Executive) havedemonstrated that vibration exposure for operators using pneumatic torquemultipliers to tighten 100 commercial vehicle wheel nuts was 10 times lower thanwhen traditional impact wrenches are used. The Norbar Pneutorque® PTM-72-1350B and one other multiplier were subjected to lab and field tests by the HSEand both tools confirmed manufacturer claims of low vibration emissions.

The benefits of using torque multipliers over impact wrenches include: • Low vibration levels support health & safety in the workplace by avoiding

occupational risks such as VWF (vibration white finger) also known as HAVS (hand arm vibration syndrome). o The Control of Vibrations at Work Regulations impose a Daily Exposure Action Value (EAV) of 2.5 m/s2, above which employers must introduce controls to eliminate or reduce exposure and provide health surveillance to operators regularly exposed to vibration that exceeds this level. o The Norbar Pneutorque pneumatic torque multiplier does not exceed 2.5 m/s2. This means there is no restriction in its use during the working day.

• Torque multipliers are very much quieter than impact wrenches, so exposure time can be safely increased without the compulsory use of ear defenders. o The Noise at Work Regulations state that it becomes compulsory to wear hearing protection when exposure reaches 90dBA. o A typical impact wrench will reach 90-98dBA when idling and exceed this level when impacting. o The Norbar Pneutorque pneumatic torque multiplier reaches only 83dBA, producing a quieter working environment for the operator and those in the operating vicinity.

• Using impact wrenches requires torque to be checked using a torque wrench and frequently nuts may be over-tightened. A pneumatic torque multiplier undertakes accurate torque tightening in a single process and when fitted with integrated transducer can also be used to measure the applied torque.

• Vibration is also an important element in reducing the life of tools and sockets in commercial vehicle workshops, so using torque multipliers with their low vibration levels can help preserve these components.

Philip Brodey of Norbar Torque Tools, based in Banbury, said that the HSE hadidentified the need for these tests because of the increased use of torque multipliersas an alternative to impact wrenches. “We believe that the tests have shown thevery clear health & safety benefits that using torque multipliers can provide in theworkplace,” he said.

The HSE tests were carried out at the Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL) usingthe standard test outlined in ISO/FDIS 28927-2:2008, with declared vibrationemission levels verified according to criteria set by BS EN 12096:1997. Both brakedevice and free running tests were used by the HSL, and the multipliers were alsotrialled in the field at a commercial vehicle fleet maintenance workshop.

The Environment Agency, Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Northern IrelandEnvironment Agency are working together on new legislation affecting the tyre industry.They have chosen Brityrex as a major platform for an important tyre trade campaign toraise awareness about the new legislation covering the chemical make-up of tyres andretread rubber.

With effect from the beginning of January this year new European REACH legislationstates that extender oils shall not be placed on the market, or used for the production oftyres or parts of tyres if they contain more than the threshold limits of PAH (polycyclicaromatic hydrocarbon). The restrictions also apply to the marketing of tyres and treads forretreading.

Some PAHs can be extremely toxic when released into the environment, for example bybeing deposited on road surfaces during use.

Both European manufacturers, importers and retailers need to comply with the newruling; anyone found to be selling tyres containing PAHs above the restricted levels couldbe faced with enforcement proceedings. One of the problems for retailers and wholesalerswill be that there is no visual test to determine the presence of PAH, which means theywill need to be absolutely confident that their tyre suppliers are aware of and meeting thetighter standard.
