OUR ENVIRONMENT

CNMI Size Matters is pleased to announced the new “Caught Fishin’” Contest! Size Matters staff will be out and about during the month of April, talking with fishermen about the L50 campaign. Any fisherman who is “caught” with an L50 ruler on them will receive a FREE SIZE MATTERS T-SHIRT and be registered in a draw-ing to win a CUSTOM ICE CHEST! So, be sure to carry your rulers and be on the lookout for Size Matters staff! Rulers are available at the DFW, DEQ and CRM offices.

What is the “Size Matters” Campaign? The CNMI “Size Matters” Campaign aims

to promote sustainable fishing by catching or eating fish only after they have reached their L50 size, or the size at which they begin to reproduce. This is one way we can work to ensure there will be enough fish for all of us tomorrow. Please read below for a answers to a couple of fre-quently asked questions regarding the “L50 - Size Matters” campaign.

Are the sizes listed in the poster and ruler a new law?

No, this is not a new law or regulation. The sizes listed are recommendations based on the average size at which our fish begin to produce eggs; this size is called L50. These guides can be a helpful tool for all fishermen interested in sustaining our fisheries.

How does only taking, buying or eating fish that are the ‘right size’ help the reef?

Harvesting, buying or eating fish below the listed L50 sizes reduces the number of spawning fish in the reef, resulting in less fish for tomor-row. By allowing fish to reach their reproductive size (also known as L50) before they are caught , we can help make sure there will be more fish on the reef to replace the ones being taken. These recommended sizes are not applicable to early juvenile runs (like manahak and I’e), though al-lowing fish to reach the recommended size will increase the size of these runs.

Where do the size recommendations come from?

The L50 sizes are based on the best avail-able life-history information with contributions from local and regional resource agencies and scientific journals. Regional variations in L50 sizes typically only vary a small amount. Feedback on these sizes from knowledgeable and experienced fishermen is invaluable to our ongo-ing efforts to keep our fisheries healthy. How does it work?

By becoming familiar with the size at which fish reach maturity, fishermen can then choose to target only fish that have reached reproductive size, and if possible release those that are too small so that they have a chance to repopulate the reef. What about juvenile fish runs like I’e, mana-hak and satmonetiyu?

Harvesting of the early juvenile fish runs have proven to be a sustainable practice within the CNMI and are not a target of the size matters campaign. The recommendation is that we not catch late juvenile and young adults before they have a chance to contribute to future runs.

Size Matters Tools The two sided, water proof brochure (ruler)

shows 22 of the most commonly caught reef fish in the CNMI along with their L50 size written underneath in inches. The brochure also includes directions on how to measure your caught fish using the built in ruler, as well as demarcates CNMI’s marine protected areas and details other relevant fishing laws in the NMI.

The poster shows some of the most com-monly caught reef fish in the CNMI painted to their L50 size, meaning that the full sized poster shows the actual size at which it is thought the fish reach sexual maturity. By catching fish over this size, we can ensure that they have had a chance to reproduce and replenish the reef be-fore they are caught.
