Bro. Chuck and the FBC Martin Family, On behalf of the Staff and Board of Directors at Catalyst Missions, we would like to thank you for partnering with us to propagate the gospel through indigenous church planting. We count it a great privilege to see others join this work founded upon the words of the Lord Jesus, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20). In the subsequent pages of this packet, you will find a number of necessary documents. As you prepare for your upcoming trip, we suggest that you take time to review each page, carefully noting the proposed schedule, needed items list, memorandum of understanding, training lessons, Backyard Bible Club lessons, and prayer points. These instructions will aid in securing a beneficial trip for both parties and growth in grace. Again, thank you for your willingness to serve Christ through a partnership with Catalyst Missions. We pray you will find Jesus more satisfying as you serve Him in the gospel ministry! Doug Landrum, PhD Executive Director, Catalyst Missions

Backyard Bible Club Lesson 1

Church Planting Principles: Lesson 1
Training Summary:
Lesson 1: Why church plant?
Why Church Plant?
3 Primary Reasons o Existing churches lack the native tongue
Acts 2:1-12 The early church demonstrated the necessity of the gospel in the heart
language of the hearer.
o Existing, indigenous churches lack necessary proximity The term indigenous communicates three main ideas.
Self-sustaining o The native believers must have the ability to sustain all
ministries of the church without the need for outside resources. Thus, the planter must avoid planting a church dependent upon his time, talent, or treasure.
Self-propagating o The native believers must have the ability and
motivation to reproduce every ministry the planter initiates. (This facet of indigenous churches necessitates simple models)
Self-governing o The native believers must consent to their own ability
under the ministry of the Holy Spirit through the Word of God to govern the affairs of the church. At this point, the planter must avoid significant dependency by allowing the people to work through their own problems with the Word.
Though indigenous churches may exist, proximity forms a major part of indigenous principles.
The native believers need a place within their own community. o Romans 15:23 o “no place left”
Further, indigenous does not just refer to cultural awareness.
www.catalystmissions.org • P.O. Box 63078, Colorado Springs, CO 80962 • [email protected]
o Example: We are not just planting among Hispanics. We are planting among Hispanics in Memphis, in Green Acres. Every community is indigenous.
o Existing churches struggle to assimilate those who have never heard Pragmatically, the statement, “those who have never heard” refers to
two categories UUP (Unreached, Unengaged people groups)
o Romans 1:18-23 o This group refers to those with no gospel opportunity
UEP (Unevangelized peoples) o Acts 2:1-12 o This group refers to those who have never heard the
gospel intelligibly in their own language and culture. Native unbelievers will almost never assimilate into existing Anglo
churches. Some of them have never heard (UUP). Many have only been taught in English, utilizing deductive,
logical presentations (UEP).
Our Model (Christ’s Model)
How will we plant churches? o We will formulate a cluster approach to planting and take individual
responsibility for multiplication. o Step 1: Small reproduction
John 1:42 Jesus spent 80% of his time with his disciples He peered through Peter to Pentecost Each core team member responsible for one to two families.
o Step 2: Men of peace Luke 10:6
Identification of responsibility comes through intentional effort to identify openness
o Prayer walking o Community events
o Step 3: Gospel sowing Matthew 16:17-23
To be culturally relevant, we will utilize creation to Christ or Buenas Noticias.
o Step 4: Discipleship Impartation 2 Timothy 2:2
Only after you have perceived faithfulness to relate the newly received gospel to the native family do you take them into your trust.
At this point, you baptize the individual and begin specific training for reproduction within the plant model.
www.catalystmissions.org • P.O. Box 63078, Colorado Springs, CO 80962 • [email protected]
o Theology o Methodology o Devotion
o Step 5: Familial connectivity 1 Corinthians 12:13-15 Acts 2:42
Four elements of church life o Apostle’s teaching o Fellowship o Breaking of bread o Prayer
Quotes/Statistics
o “In the midst of such disintegration and chaos it appears that the goal of the vast majority of churches today is to attract as many people as possible by providing the desired recreational, educational, and other felt need niche programs/groups that people demand and have come to expect from the church. This programming approach has been practiced for decades now without regard to the fact that the church is having little or no impact on the deep spiritual problems facing our families and our nation.” –Dr. Greg Spears
o Each year, in America, 3,500 to 4,000 churches cease to exist. Only 1,500 to 2,000 are planted. 60% fewer churches exist now for every 10,000 persons than in 1920.
o We are only reaching a fraction of the ethnic population in America and worldwide.

Church Planting Ability
Model o Ability/Need of the Planter
www.catalystmissions.org • P.O. Box 63078, Colorado Springs, CO 80962 • [email protected]
Anyone can plant new churches Under the direction of the Holy Spirit Having all the necessary tools Does not demand a pastor role
Hardly anyone plants new churches
o Church planting essentials 1 Thessalonians 1:5
Sower Spirit Seed Soil
Church Planting Baggage o Money, gadgets and things concepts and theological positions may be
just a great hindrance The idea that a church that meets in a church house is more
genuine than a church that meets in a home People-driven churches are much different than
program or place-driven churches Singular leadership in the new church.
Leadership must reevaluate involvement/experience
Predicting the future on the basis of past resistance or failures. This requires no faith at all.
The idea that if one sector of society is resistant then all others must be.
A flawed definition of what a church is.
The idea that only the professional clergy can be effective church planters.
Low expectation level for new believers.
Vision
1. Gospel 2. Family 3. Community Training 4. Mission
People-Oriented
Not Place-Oriented
Church Planting
Existing Church
From this method emerges
the national pastor
www.catalystmissions.org • P.O. Box 63078, Colorado Springs, CO 80962 • [email protected]
The idea that if a church ceases to function as a group, the church or planter is a failure.
What is a church? o Four Main Components (Acts 2:42)
Fellowship Breaking of Bread Prayer Apostle’s teaching
o Body of Believers Part of God’s eternal plan Puts forth Christ as the head of the group Proposes unity within the membership even though there is a
variety of gift. Pushes every part of the body to grow.
What does the body need to grow?
o Nourishment o Time o Space
We are planting a multiplying group of believers with simplicity as the goal!
