Broadband connectivity in Asia
and the Pacific:
Activities in 2019 and 2020
Outline:
• Recap of Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway (AP-IS) activities in 2019;
• Activities for potential collaboration with IAWGICT members in 2020;
• Planned activities in 2020.
(a). Recap: AP-IS activities in 2019
1) AP-IS Commission resolution (75/7) (May 2019);– Mandate for supporting ESCAP
member States on regional/subregional implementation;
– Continue to collaborate with other stakeholders and partner organisations;
– Continue research and analysis for informed regional dialogue on ICT.

2) Commission session side-event on ‘Expanding Internet access for inclusive development’ (ESCAP, Google & Thailand) (May 2019);
- Facilitated sharing of best practices on innovative solutions for connectivity
- Google Station & Net Pracharatfor improving communities’ connectivity.

3) 3rd session of AP-IS Steering Committee (Aug 2019):
- WSIS regional review (with ITU)

1) Working Group on Pacific IXP (23-25 June 2020 TBC) (with ISOC, APNIC, PITA & USP):
- Study on operational model
- Training and meeting of PICs in Apia, Samoa.
2) Working Group on CLMV IXP (24 March 2020) (with NIA ROK):
- Study on CLMV IXPs
- Meeting of CLMV in Bangkok, Thailand.
(b). Potential collaboration with IAWGICT
members in 2020:
3) Operation Model in GMS Information Superhighway (with CAICT) (April 2020):
- Proposed Trans-multi-country terrestrial cable sharing model
- Connecting China, Thailand & CLMV (Greater Mekong)
4) Co-deployment of ICT along passive infrastructure (roads, railway & energy):
- Capacity Development
- Mongolia, Kazakhstan & Kyrgyzstan
(c). Other planned activities (2020):
1) 4th Session of the AP-IS Steering Committee, UNCC, Bangkok (31 Aug -1 Sept 2020)
- WSIS regional review, Exhibition, showcase joint studies/projects on AP-IS implementation, etc.
2) 3rd Session of the Committee on Information and Communications Technology, Science, Technology & Innovation (CICTSTI) (2-4 Sept 2020);
- Studies and policy recommendations
(c). Other planned activities - APCICT (2020):1) Develop new modules and submodules
-Data Privacy and Cyber Security/Digital Rights as submodules for Information security
-ICT for local government
-ICT for the vulnerable/marginalized population
2) Update modules
-Climate Change

3) Launch updated Academy training modules
-ASEAN, CIS Sub-region, Pacific Sub-region, and countries with special needs
