SILO WIRELESS DELIVERS HIGH-SPEED AND COST-EFFECTIVE WIRELESS ACCESS IN RURAL ONTARIO WITH THE PMP 320.

SITUATIONWhen Andreas Wiatowski, a networking consultant, moved to rural Ontario, Canada, in 2006, he immediately realized the Internet connectivity options in the region were both expensive and unreliable. Shortlyafterhisarrival,WiatowskiformedSiloWireless,awirelessInternetserviceprovider(WISP)designedtodelivercost-effective,high-speedwirelessaccesstotheruralregionofBrantCounty,Ontario,andthesurroundingarea.Afterbuildinghissubscriberbase,the900MHzfrequencyeventuallybecamemorecrowdedandlessreliable,andWiatowskibeganlookingforthenextwirelesssolutionthatwouldhelphimprovidefaster,morereliableaccesstoawiderregion.

SOLUTIONAs Silo Wireless grew, it teamed with broadband supplier MBSI Canada and Cambium Networks, which provided just what Silo was looking for: the Cambium Point-to-Multipoint (PMP) 320. WiatowskiclearlyexplainstheneedtoshifttothePMP320andthebenefitsofdoingso.“Rightwhenthe

3.65GHzbandwasopeninguptoserviceproviders,”hesays,“Iimmediatelysawanopportunitytorolloutaccessbeforeanyoneelse.Our900MHzspectrumwasstartingtobecomecongested,andwewererunningintoalotofinterference,soofferingserviceat3.65GHzwiththePMP320wasjustwhatweneeded.”

BRINGING RURAL BROADBAND UP TO SPEEDAndreasWiatowskihasbeeninvolvedwiththeInternetandITindustriesforovertwodecades,andhe’salltoofamiliarwiththeupsanddownstheindustrieshavefaced.Still,hewasshockedatthelackofaffordable,wirelessInternetaccesswhenhemovedtoBrantCounty,aruralareaofOntario.“Thereweretwoprovidersinthearea,whichofferedeitherslowdial-uporunreliablesatelliteconnectivity,”Wiatowskiexplains,“andbothwerefartooexpensive.”

Wiatowskiknewtherehadtobeawaytodeliverthesamekindofaffordableservicethaturbanareasenjoytotheruralregionhecalledhome,and,alongwithhiswifeCynthia,heformedSiloWirelesstoprovideexactlythat.“Thebottomlineisthis:There’sadigitaldividebetweentheruralpopulationinourregionandoururbancounterparts,”hesays.“Andeveryonefromkidstobusinessownerstothegeneralpublicwerebeingrobbedoftheexperiencesthatbroadbandaccessprovides.”

Takingado-it-yourselfapproach,Wiatowskibeganinstallingcustombuilthardwareonsilos,grainelevatorsandotherstructures,whichprovidedtheWISPwithanamethepubliccouldrelatetoandkeptinstallationcostslow.Withthissolution,Wiatowskifinallydeliveredthekindofruralwirelessaccessthattoday’susersdemand,andbeforelongSiloWirelesswasupandrunning.

A TRUSTED SUPPLIER Whileresearchingproductsandtechnologytocontinuebuildinghisnetwork,WiatowskieventuallycameacrossMBSICanada,awirelesstechnologysupplier,andbegananalliancethat,byimplementingasolutionconsistingsolelyofCambiumproducts,wouldhelpSilodeliverevenfaster,morereliablecoverageinthearea.

AsitsrelationshipwithMBSIprogressed,SiloWirelesseventuallybeganusingCambium’sCanopysystemof900MHzaccesspointsandsubscribermodulestoprovidethekindofwirelessaccessthathadbeenmissingintheregion.Thissolutionwasidealfortheareaduetobothitsabilitytocoverareasevenwithchallenging,non-line-of-sightterrainanditsextensivecoverageareaofupto40miles,whichisidealfordeliveringaccesstosparselypopulatedandremoteareas.

A GAME-CHANGING SOLUTIONThoughthe900MHzsolutionhadbeendeliveringgreatresultsforSiloWirelessanditsgrowingsubscriberbase,asmoreandmoreproductsinthesurroundingareausedthefrequency,thespectrumbegansufferingfrominterferenceandcongestion.That’swhenWiatowskiwentbacktoMBSIlookingforsomethingnew,andthePoint-to-Multipoint320,alicensed,fixed,cost-effectiveandeasy-to-installsolution,immediatelygrabbedhisattention.

“ThePMP320wasareallyattractivepropositionfromthestart,”saysWiatowski.“TheWiMax802.16einteroperability,theextensivereachandtheabilitytodynamicallyadjustserviceflowsforbandwidthandlayermultipleserviceloadswerejusttoomuchtoignore.Beingthefirstprovidertodeliverserviceinthe3.65GHzband,freeofcongestionandinterference,wasalsoahugeplus.”

A BETTER SOLUTION FOR PROVIDERS AND SUBSCRIBERS TheresultsthePMP320hasdeliveredhavebeendramatic,fromtheeaseofuseandinstallation,totheenhancedserviceforsubscribers.“It’sbeenajoytodeploytheseclusters,”saysWiatowski,“becausethey’rejustsosimpletoinstallandconfigure.Andwe’realsoabletodothingswiththePMP320wenevercouldhavedonewithour900MHzsolution.Withthe900MHzproductswehadtoinstallataround100to150feetmaximum,andwewereonlygettingabout4kilometersofcoverage.Withthe320,wecandeployat450feetandseeamaximumrangeinthe7MHzchannelof16kilometers.”

ThePMP320hasalsoincreasedSilo’spositiveinstallationratio.Now,whenanewsubscriberrequestsservicewithinthecurrentcoveragearea,nearly80%ofthosesubscriberscanbehookedupwithoutanyadditionalaccesspointinstallations.Thankstothe320’sabilitytoleveragemultiple-inputandmultiple-output(MIMO)technology,Silohasalsobeenabletoprovidecoveragetositesthatwerepreviouslyunreachableduetonon-line-of-sightterrainchallenges.

Theresultsforsubscribershavebeensimilarlyimpressive.Whereasspeedsbeforeusuallystalledinthe1to1.5MbpsrangeandSiloWirelesscouldonlyprovideonelevelofservice,it’snowabletoofferavarietyofspeedpackages,rangingfrom300Kbpsto8Mbps.Andassubscriberscontinuetousemoreandmorebandwidtheveryday,speedbecomesmoreandmoreimportant.“Ourcustomerswantwhattheywant,whentheywantit,”Wiatowskisays,“andthat’swhatwedelivertothem.We’vegotlotsofgamers,andweneverhearanythingaboutlatency.Itjustworks,andourcustomersarehappywiththeperformancewe’vebeenabletodeliver.”

Intheend,thePMP320andastrongalliancewithMBSIandCambiumproductshaveallowedSiloWirelesstothriveanddeliverwirelessbroadbandaccesstoaruralareathatlackedaffordableandreliablecoveragebefore.“TheCambiumplatformandthePMP320inparticularisjustaverycost-effective,game-changingsolutionthatdeliversexactlywhatCambiumsaysitwill,”Wiatowskisays.“Andwiththeabilitytore-flashthedeviceandupgradesoftware,it’sgoingtobeagreatinvestmentgoingforwardaswell.”

NowthatSiloWirelesshasasolutionitcantrust,it’sthinkingaboutthepossibilitiesthathaveopenedup.“Withthissolution,”Wiatowskisays,“we’regoingtocontinueprovidingaffordableInternetaccessinourimmediateregionandworkonextendingourcoveragetoaround6,000subscribersovera100kilometerradius.Weknowwe’regoingtohavealowernumberofsubscriberspersector,butCambiumhasaddressedtheruralmarketreallyeffectivelywithapricingstrategythat’scosteffectiveandwithaplatformwecantrust.”
