BROADBAND
INDUSTRY PROFILEBroadband
for Arapahoe & Douglas Counties
BROADBANDThe broadcasting and telecommunications cluster includes companies that help deliver voice, data, and video to end users. This cluster includes landline and wireless telephone communications companies, radio and television communications services, and cable and Internet service providers.
The nine-county Metro Denver and Northern Colorado region is a key distribution hub, making fast Internet connections a necessity in the region. Denver ranked fifth on CNBC’s list of “America’s Most Wired Cities” with an average download speed of 10.2-megabits per second (Mbps).
Further, a number of telecommunication carriers in the nine-county region are expanding their fourth-generation mobile broadband, long-term evolution network, or 4G LTE.
AT&T plans to invest at least $100 million to upgrade its nine-county region wireless network. The company is adding new fiber-optic connections, cell sites, and specialized antenna systems for improved Internet connectivity and call quality.
Verizon Wireless expanded its 4G LTE network in the region in 2010 to include two cities in the Denver South region– Highlands Ranch and Parker – in addition to Broomfield, Golden, Fort Collins, and Colorado Springs. The Verizon Wireless network has download speeds of up to 10 times faster than the 3G network.
The Denver South region’s telecommunications industry is rapidly evolving and is one of the region’s largest clusters, with more than 15,600 employees working in nearly 420 companies. Notably, employment in the Denver South region’s telecommunication cluster accounted for roughly 39 percent of all telecommunications employment in the nine-county region.Courtesy of Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation

This chart shows the relationship between the number of job listings versus the number of hires for each of the top occupations in the sector.
If there are more listings than hires, it means that the job requires specific skills and credentials, and so most openings for that occupation are listed. An example is the intensive care registered nurse. Thus, it is more important for a candidate to have the required skills, credentials and experience than merely being an effective personal networker.
If there are more hires than listings, it means that most people in those occupations are finding jobs through networking rather than looking at job listings. These are occupations where people with effective personal networking skills have the edge.
Occupations with medium strength of hidden job market require both the necessary skills and credentials, and effective personal networking on the part of the job seeker.

BROADBANDStaffing PatternsThis table shows growth/decline for the top 20 occupations within the industry, as well as the percent of total employment within the industry represented by each occupation. The thing to be mindful of is that the change by occupation merely reflects the total number of jobs at the beginning and end of the period. Even if a job may decline by 100 positions between 2014 and 2019, there may be a much larger number of annual openings, based on retirements, career changes and so forth.
