“SOMETHING ROTTEN! isThe Producers PLUS Spamalot

PLUS The Book of Mormon. SQUARED!”—NEW YORK MAGAZINE

    Fisher Theatre • Sept. 25–Oct. 7BroadwayInDetroit.com, ticketmaster.com, 800-982-2787 & box office 313-872-1000. Groups (12+): [email protected] (subject: Something Rotten!) or 313-871-1132.

    7:30PM Sept. 30.

Nothing’s as AMAZING as a MUSICAL! to get things done, tries to help. Nigel falls

for a pretty Puritan named Portia, whose daddy strongly disapproves. Unreliable soothsayer Thomas Nostradamus, nephew of the Nostradamus, looks into the future and tells Nick that theater’s next big thing will be—tahdah!—“musicals,” where peo-ple sing, dance and act all at the same time!

Something Rotten! is laced throughout with humor for Shakespeare aficionados and musical theater geeks.

But as O’Farrell observes, “If it works as a musical for people who don’t know musicals or Shakespeare, then I’m happy. It’s about show business and putting on a show. Just doing that in Tudor times gives it an extra spin.”

“I think it doesn’t matter how much you know,” says director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw, whose other Broadway shows in-clude Aladdin and The Book of Mormon. “My nieces and nephews say it’s their favorite

show that I’ve done, and they don’t know any of the references.”

For the creative team, Something Rotten! has been a challenge, an education and a joy, an experience they still savor as the touring production plays cities all over the United States.

“This was by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Wayne says, “but [it was] so rewarding to sit in a theater and watch all these amazing contributions from people who took it beyond our idea to create this magical, happy experience.”

Something Rotten! is at the Fisher Theatre Sept. 25–Oct. 7. For tickets, please see our ad at left.

The seeds of Something Rotten! were sewn in the mid-1990s by Karey Kirk-patrick, a screenwriter, songwriter and director with credits including The Rescuers Down Under, James and the Giant Peach and Chicken Run, and his brother Wayne Kirkpatrick, a Grammy Award-win-ning songwriter (Eric Clapton’s Song of the Year “Change the World,” Garth Brooks’ “Wrapped Up in You”).

“We were big history buffs. It started with, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if Shakespeare’s Lon-don were a lot like what Broadway was in the 1930s?’” Karey says. “Then it was, ‘What would it be like to be writ-ing plays in the shadow of William Shakespeare, after Romeo and Juliet just opened?’”

“We thought of two writers,” Wayne says. “What if one went to a soothsayer? Then somewhere along the way it was, ‘What if the two writ-ers were brothers? What if the sooth-sayer’s name was Nostradamus, but he wasn’t the Nostradamus? What if he was a senile, bad soothsayer, his nephew?’ Eventually it was, ‘If we’re going to do this, we should really get serious about it.’”

Karey brought in British comedy writer John O’Farrell, whom he’d met on Chicken Run, to help write the show’s story. The brothers craft-ed the music and lyrics, eventually writing more than 50 songs. What they had, after plenty of revisions and a multi-year devel-opmental process, is a buoyant musical set in Shakespeare’s day that imagines the cre-ation of the very first musical.

Something Rotten! centers around Nick and Nigel Bottom (the last name comes from A Midsummer Night’s Dream), brothers desperate for a hit in Elizabethan London, where William Shakespeare is a rock star-like god of the stage lately given to crib-bing plots.

Nick’s wife Bea, a can-do gal in the style of Shakespearean heroines who cross-dress

    Something magical… and Something Rotten!

People sing, dance and act all at the same time!

When native Detroiter and Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller returned to De-troit for the 2016 Crain’s Detroit Homecom-ing event, he delighted theatre fans with the news that the show would be coming to Detroit in the near future. Earlier this year, Broadway In Detroit granted theatre fans wishes with the announcement of its 2018-19 Season headlined by Hamilton, with Disney’s Aladdin and five other Broad-way hits making their Detroit debut.

The 2018–19 Broadway In Detroit Sub-scription Season features seven shows and opens with Something Rotten, the block-buster musical comedy, at the Fisher The-atre, September–October 2018, followed by the hit Broadway musical Aladdin at the Detroit Opera House, December 2018–January 2019.

The remainder of the Subscription Sea-son shows are in 2019 at the Fisher The-atre: The Play That Goes Wrong, Broadway and London’s award-winning smash com-edy in February; The Lightning Thief—The Percy Jackson Musical, an action-packed theatrical adventure in March; Hamilton, March–April; Waitress, an uplifting come-dy with music by Sara Bareilles in May; and Anastasia, the romantic and adventure-filled new musical inspired by the popular movie in June. Please note that all show dates may be subject to change.

“Detroit theatre goers have been anx-iously awaiting the arrival of Hamilton at the Fisher Theatre and we are thrilled to

include it on a super-stellar 2018–19 Broad-way In Detroit Subscription Season!” said Broadway In Detroit Executive Director Alan Lichtenstein. “And Disney’s Aladdin will be the perfect musical to see at the De-troit Opera House over the holiday season.”

Broadway In Detroit recently announced that three blockbuster Broadway shows will each make return engagements to Detroit in the upcoming season. Back by popular demand, Chicago will return to the Fisher Theatre October 2018.

The Book Of Mormon, winner of nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, returns to Detroit for a fourth time after sold-out and record-breaking engagements, playing at the Fisher Theatre December 2018.

Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera will make a trium-phant return to the Detroit Opera House January–February 2019. Please note that show dates may be subject to change.

Tickets for Something Rotten and Chicago are on sale now, and tickets for Aladdin are available through pre-sale starting Aug. 20 (please see our ad, page 14). For ticket information for the rest of the season, including details for Hamilton, sign up for the Broadway In Detroit newsletter at BroadwayInDetroit.com.

Discover a whole new world at Disney’s Aladdin, the hit Broadway musical. From the producer of The Lion King comes the timeless story of Aladdin, a thrilling new production filled with unforgettable beauty, magic, comedy and breathtaking spectacle. It’s an extraordinary theatrical event where one lamp and three wishes make the possibilities infinite.

Here are nine reasons that audiences and critics agree, Aladdin is “Exactly what you wish for!” (NBC-TV):

    1 Jazz Roots

While the animated film was in devel-opment, the character of the Genie was based on jazz greats Cab Calloway and Fats Waller. Though this concept was eventual-ly changed for the film, it was brought back to life for the Broadway show.

    2 Those Dancing Feet

Featuring an extended tap break, glitter-ing gold costumes and massive towers de-signed in art deco style, the musical num-ber “Friend Like Me” is an homage to Busby Berkeley’s 1933 classic movie musical 42nd Street. (It’s fitting, since Aladdin on Broad-way plays at the New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street.)

    3 Transcontinental Style

The costume design team thought globally to bring Aladdin’s fashions to the stage, im-porting fabrics from nine different coun-tries listed on the next page.

    4 Everyone’s In Stitches

More than 350 people in 28 shops have helped construct the costumes for Aladdin, including one craftsperson who also makes the angel wings for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

    5 Broadway’s Best Bling

The show’s dazzling costumes are made from literally millions of Swarovski® Crys-tals. In fact, just one costume piece used in the finale of “Friend Like Me” contains 1,428 sparkling beads!

6 Another Hit From The Hitmaker

Aladdin’s director/choreographer Casey Nicholaw also co-directed and choreo-graphed the 2011 Tony®-winning Best Mu-sical The Book of Mormon, giving him two blockbuster hits running on Broadway at the same time.

    7 Magic Moments

With 84 special effects—including pyro-technics, lifts, transformations and a magic carpet that actually flies—Aladdin is always more than meets the eye.

8 It’s The Big Time, But Bigger

It takes 180 people to deliver each per-formance of Aladdin. This includes actors, stage crew, musicians, dressers, hairstylists, make-up artists, ushers and box office staff.

    Aladdin’s Costumes by the Numbers

    • There are 2,039 different fabrics and trims used in the show’s costumes. Fabrics are from Morocco, Turkey, In-dia, Uzbekistan, Guatemala, France, Italy, Germany, and China.

    • There are 337 costumes in the show, based on 134 individual designs.

    • 102 costume changes take place in less than one minute.

    • There are 8,644 Swarovski rhine-stones on each man’s gold finale cos-tume in “Friend Like Me.”

    • Jasmine’s wedding dress weighs 12 lbs. because of all the crystal beading.

    9 The Winning Team

Aladdin comes from a creative team with armfuls of accolades. Collectively, the show’s creators have won 20 Grammy® Awards, 17 Tony Awards® and 13 Academy Awards®—a total of 50 major awards!

Aladdin’s Detroit premier is at the Detroit Opera House, Dec. 12–Jan. 13. For a special opportunity to get tickets before they go on sale to the public, please see our ad on page 14.

Part of the appeal of Chicago–the lon-gest-running American musical in Broadway history–is that although the events unfolding on stage occurred almost 100 years ago, they feel current. Audiences feel as if they’re watching an episode of

“Law & Order,” with sensational characters, gripping plotlines, and crimes ripped from the headlines.

    That’s because they were.In 1924, 28-year-old Mau-

rine Dallas Watkins arrived in Chicago, a city quickly becoming a mecca for crime, liquor, and jazz. Watkins was an aspiring writer and play-wright from Harvard Univer-sity, and news writing was

recommended as a way for writers to hone their craft and gain exposure to a broad range of human experiences.

Watkins hit the gold mine at The Chicago Tribune, where she was assigned the Cook County Jail’s infamous “Murderess Row,” where Watkins met, covered, and was ul-timately troubled by Belva Gaertner and Beulah Annan, women she would later im-mortalize as Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart.

A cabaret singer and society divorcee, Belva Gaertner climbed her way into high society. Between divorces from William Gaertner, a man 20 years her senior, she was arrested in March 1924 at the age of 40 for the murder of her 30-year-old lover, Walter Law.

Law was found shot dead in his car after a night on the town with Gaertner. Her best defense was that she didn’t remember what happened. Blaming it on jazz and drink, she played the card of the fallen woman. She used class, charm, and high fashion to turn her image around. The press and all-male jury ate it up, and she was acquitted.

If Gaertner was the classiest murderess in Chicago, Beulah Annan was the prettiest. Annan was 25 years old and married to her second husband when she was arrested in April 1924 for the murder of her lover and boss, Harry Kalstedt.

Annan, who was born in nearby Ow-ensboro, KY, used her Southern charms to manipulate those involved in the case. Every interview and picture was an op-portunity to play out her sob story in the

public eye. She even faked a pregnancy to gain sympathy. Despite being found with the body and confessing immediately af-terwards, Annan altered her story several times and ultimately settled on a story of self-defense. After a celebrity circus with

“sold-out” courtroom seating, Annan, too, was acquitted.

Watkins’ coverage of these trials and those of several other women on Murderess Row were widely read. It was clear that she believed many of the women were guilty and they had gamed the system.

She later channeled all her cynicism and disenchantment into a play titled The Brave Little Women that was ultimately per-formed—to rave reviews—under the name Chicago. Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly were born. Annan’s two lawyers merged into the smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn.

Chicago opened on Broadway in 1926 and toured for two years. It was made into a si-lent movie in 1927, and in 1942 it became a movie called Roxie Hart, starring Ginger Rogers. After Watkins’ death in 1969, Bob Fosse bought the rights from her estate and worked with John Kander and Fred Ebb to create Chicago: A Musical Vaudeville, open-ing on Broadway in 1975. The 1996 revival of Chicago is the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, and the sec-ond longest-running musical of all time behind only The Phantom of the Opera.

Watkins’ story was a true original and what some say exemplified a new American style of comedy. Shocking, hilarious, and exploitative, Chicago remains, almost 100 years later, a uniquely American story of celebrity, satire, and cynicism.

Chicago is at the Fisher Theatre Oct. 16–21. For tickets, please see our ad at left.
