language instruction, with the majority holding Masters degrees.

ELS provides quality instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing. No matter which program a student selects, ELS will provide
placement testing upon arrival, and place the student in one o our 12 profciency levels (Levels 101 through 112). Depending on the program,
each level consists o 15 to 30 class hours weekly o teacher-led instruction. Each session is our weeks in duration. Each level includes class
work, individualized tasks in the Language Technology Center, homework, quizzes, written essays and a fnal level test. Classroom participation
is an important part o our program.
At the end o each 4-week session, those students who have successully met the requirements or that level will progress to the next ELS
level o study and immediately begin the new session.
Students can begin their ELS program on any one o the 26 starting dates each year and can choose to study or any number o4-week sessions. Those students who complete Level 112 o the intensive English or Academic Purposes program will receive our
Level 112 Certifcate o Completion. This ofcial document is accepted as proo o English profciency or admission at more than
650 colleges and universities in the USA and Canada.
Core Classes|5
Core ClassesThe ELS curriculum is centered on core classes which are common
to the Intensive English Programs English or Academic Purposes
and General English as well as Semi-Intensive English, American
Explorer, Business English and the Complete Prep Program or the
TOEFL iBT. These classes are the essential building blocks or
successul language learning.
Levels may be grouped into Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and
Masters to allow students o similar abilities and interests to study
together. When levels are combined, each student is tracked and
evaluated according to his or her specifc level in the program.
Core classes are structured to incorporate all vital areas o English
language learning. This provides students with well-balanced
instruction in all English language skills.
Structure and Speaking Practice: This class includes instruction inspeaking, listening, grammar and vocabulary.
Reading and Writing: This class concentrates on the developmento comprehensive reading and writing accuracy and also reinorces
learning rom other skill areas.
Language Technology Center: Technology-supported learning inour Language Technology Centers allows students to concentrate
on their individual learning needs and objectives. Students also
have access to the Internet in order to complete research projects.
Skills Enhancement ClassesSkills Enhancement Classes are available to the Intensive English
Programs students. While the choice o classes varies rom location to
location, all ELS Centers oer Skills Enhancement Classes that appeal
to a variety o interests, and ocus on students specifc needs.
Skills Enhancement Classes or students studying in the
English or Academic Purposes program include:
Beginner students: Conversation, Vocabulary and ListeningComprehension
Intermediate students: One class will ocus on generalcommunication skills such as American Idioms or Real World
Listening and a second class will ocus on academic literacyskills such as Intermediate Academic Writing and University
Preparation Skills.
Advanced and Masters students: Both classes will ocus onacademic skills such as Listening and Note-taking,
Advanced Academic Writing and Speech and Debate.
Skills Enhancement Classes or students studying in the
General English program include:

General EnglishThe intensive General English program gives you the
opportunity to improve your English by focusing on the skills you
will need to communicate well in everyday business and social
settings. The four morning classes focus on the listening, speaking,
reading and writing skills needed to communicate effectively in
English. The two afternoon Skills Enhancement Classes let you apply
what you learn in the morning in a communicative and natural
setting. You have the opportunity to learn more about the native
culture, improve your vocabulary and use of idioms, and conduct
meaningful and productive conversations.
Whether you want to improve your English language skills for your
job, to better enjoy your travels or just to converse in a languageunderstood the world over the General English program is perfect
for you. Learning English has never been so enjoyable! A typical

English for Academic Purposes
Studying at a college or university outside o your home country isvery demanding and requires a high level o English profciency. The
intensive English for Academic Purposes program gives students the
opportunity to ocus on the academic skills they will need to succeed
in their pursuit o higher education.
English for Academic Purposes students beneft rom our hours o
morning classes designed to build a oundation or communicative
competency: two lessons o Structure and Speaking Practice (or
Language Studies), one lesson o Reading and Writing and one lesson
in our Language Technology Center. In the aternoon, students study
or two hours in our Skills Enhancement Classes. These classes are
designed to build on the core skills taught in the morning classes.
Skills Enhancement Classes or the beginner level students (Levels
101 103) ocus on basic oral and written communication skills. Theygive students a chance to practice and gain skill with the content
taught in their morning classes.
Starting at the intermediate levels (Levels 104 106), the English
for Academic Purposes students begin to ocus on academic literacy
skills. One Skills Enhancement Class each day is dedicated to
academic preparation, while the second class ocuses on general
English skills. Once these students reach the low-advanced level (107),
both aternoon Skills Enhancement Classes are typically dedicated
to improving academic reading, writing, listening and speaking
skills. Because the academic preparation begins at an early level, and
complements the core English skills taught in the morning, students
acquire a high level o English profciency and are well prepared or
academic study.
When students complete Level 112 o the English for Academic
Purposes program, they receive a certifcate that shows that they have
ulflled the English language requirement at more than 650 colleges
and universities.

Seattle, Washington now oers the Cambridge Certifcate in English
Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA). The CELTA Teacher Training
Certifcate program is designed or people with little or no experience
in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). This 120-hour course
covers all aspects o ESL instruction including language analysis,

The winner o the Miss Turkey 2009 competition, Ms. Ebru Sam,
took advantage o this once-in-a-lietime opportunity, attending
the ELS Center in New York (Manhattan). She was excited about the
opportunity to attend a school in the United States and to increase her
English fuency.
Ms. Sam said her motivations to improve her English were not
only to assist her in her personal lie, but also to succeed in her
proession when she competes on an international level. Additionally,
the riendships that she has made will last a lietime.

More than 30 years ago, Karl Oberrauch attended ELS at Wagner
College in Staten Island, New York. He went on to graduate rom
Columbia University with an MBA and became a successul
businessman in Italy.
In the autumn o 2010, ELS/New York (Manhattan) students Claudia
and Carol Oberrauch did not have to persuade their ather to allow
them to study abroad: Karl enthusiastically enrolled his daughters

Executive EnglishThe value o being able to communicate in English is something that
successul executives and proessionals understand. ELS oers several
unique program options to help busy proessionals learn English and
achieve the proessional growth they want.
English for ExecutivesGroup and One-to-One Instruction
The English or Executives Program is intended or junior andmid-level proessionals who want to combine general English practice
along with career-specifc communication training. The English or
Executives Program consists o our 50-minute interactive group
lessons, combined with our regular morning program classes and
three personalized 50-minute one-to-one lessons each day. The course
length may be two or our weeks, beginning on any o the 26
year-round Intensive English program start dates. ELS will provide
assistance with housing arrangements when requested.
Super Intensive English
One-to-One InstructionThe ELS Super Intensive English Program is the astest way to
improve English profciency. This course combines highly
concentrated, one-to-one instruction and a curriculum targeted
specially to the participants needs. Courses are individually designed,
based upon level o English ability and desired language use and
outcomes, as well as the time available or study. This program can
begin on any Monday and may last or one week to our weeks or
more. The Super Intensive Program consists o 20, 30 or 45 private,
50-minute lessons each week. This program is taught on a Monday

Super Intensive PlusOne-to-One Instruction
For maximum results in just one week, the Super Intensive
Plus Program is the best choice or a busy executive. This very
demanding course consists o 70 lessons, each o which lasts or 50
minutes. Combined in-class instruction and out-o-class cultural
activities generally are taught rom Monday through Sunday. Super
Intensive Plus is ideal in preparation or an important business
presentation or meeting in an English-speaking situation. Because o
the intense pace o this program, intermediate English skill is highly

ELS Language Technology CentersYour Personalized Learning Plan!
ELS has designed a learning environment or you that not only
complements live classes, but does much more. Language Technology
Centers (LTC) are available at all ELS locations*. The LTC incorporates
computer-supported learning with classroom instruction to make
the most o your class time. Students receive individualized
learning plans, specialized content and support, and attention to
specifc language challenges.
ELS Language Technology Centers give you the opportunity to work
on those aspects o your English skills which require the most
attention, such as vocabulary development, reading and listening
comprehension, and pronunciation. Specially trained instructors will
create an Individual Learning Plan with you, based on your skills.
Instructors are in the Language Technology Center to supervise
student learning and assist by answering questions while they
monitor your work rom a central console. You will beneft rom
repeated practice through exercises and immediate eedback on how
well you are doing. Progress indicators will show exactly what is
being learned and how successully.
Because students in Language Technology Centers study at
individual stations by means o Individual Learning Plans, the labs
can accommodate 20-40 learners comortably. Portolios and program

Pre-Arrival TestingTo help you better plan or your studies, ELS has created a Pre-Arrival
Test (PAT). The PAT is a quick, economical and easy way to determineyour current English profciency. With that inormation in hand, you
will know approximately how much time you will need to complete a
course o study at ELS. (Final level placement will be determined by
the ELS placement test, which is given to all students upon arrival at
the ELS center.) You will also know in advance whether you qualiy
or advanced-level courses oered by ELS, such as the Complete Prep
Program or the TOEFL iBT.
The PAT evaluates your grammar, listening, speaking and writing
abilities in 30 to 50 minutes, online. You will receive immediate,
computer-generated eedback on your grammar and listening skills
ater completing the test. You will get teacher-generated eedback on

University Certifcate ProgramStudying on a university campus creates special opportunities; among
these are the chances to meet both native and international students
and try out university classes. The University Certifcate Program
allows Intensive English students enrolled in ELS Level 107 and higher
to participate in designated university classes when university is in
session. Participants meet students in a college classroom setting and
learn about business, communication, international politics or oreign
policy. At the same time, they improve their listening comprehension
and use o ormal vocabulary. A course certifcate signed by
university ofcials is awarded at the conclusion o each course.
