San Damiano d’Asti

San Damiano d’Asti is a village with 8474 inhabitants just 15 km from Asti and 50 km from Turin. It is in the Alto Monferrato, almost at the centre of the area Colline Alfie-ri and it’s located among Langhe, Roero and Monferrato. The residential area expanded on a hill on the left side of the river Borbore and it consists of three suburbs around the old town cen-tre: the north-eastern Rondò, the

westward Piano and the southern San Rocco.Among the vineyards on the sur-rounding hills there are a lot of far-mhouses and hamlets.Around San Damiano d’Asti there are numerous hamlets, the most important of which are marked by the bell towers of the parish chur-ches outside the town, their noble castles or their gardens. They are in little small and peaceful valleys,

ideal for a day out in the nature or for a local festival in a summer evening. The nineteenth century church of San Bartolomeo, in the hamlet Va-scagliana, overlooks a wide valley.A short way off, in the hamlet of Gorzano, there’s another beautiful church devoted to Santa Maria della Pietà that has been built in Gothic style and dates back to the 20’s. Proceeding northwards, along a winding hill road that offers won-derful views, we reach the ham-let San Pietro, that is marked by the imposing Romanesque bell tower, which stands out from the surrounding fields. The church reorganised and changed but its origins date back to the eleventh century. The hamlet of Torrazzo is also re-ally interesting with its medieval Tower and the wineyard of the 17th century, a noble summer re-

sidence in the country, which be-came an elegant home, with a lar-ge and artistic garden in the 19th century. In the hamlet San Grato we find the eighteenth century Villa Man-cardi with by a splendid terraced garden; not far from it there’s Villa Piana, that dates back to the early 18th century, with its large park. Lavezzole lies along the other bank of the creek Borbore, here the antique monastery (17th cen-tury), that is known today as Cast-le, has a typical nineteenth century garden. We have to mention also the hamlet Ripalda with the se-venteenth century chapel of Santa Eurosia.Just a few kilometres from San Damiano there are: Govone and Cisterna d’Asti. The first one is situated betwe-en Alba and Asti, in the hill zone Roero and it’s known above all for its Castle, that is in the World

Heritage List of UNESCO since 1997. From 1792 to 1870 the Ca-stle was one of the residences of the Royal House of Savoy but it is known also because of the visit of Jean-Jacques Rousseau in 1730. Since 2007 it is part of the itine-rary Castelli Doc, that consists of eight wonderful castles: Grinzane Cavour, Barolo, Serralunga d’Alba, Govone, Magliano Alfieri, Roddi, Mango and Benevello. The Castle of Cisterna d’Asti, mu-nicipality on the borderline with the Province Cuneo, rises up on the top of a hill. It was a fortified enclosure, then, in the Baroque age it has been transformed in a noble country residence. Since 1980 inside there’s the Museo del-le arti e dei mestieri di un tempo with thousands old objects, that are an important testimony of the handmade and farming Piedmon-tese culture between the 17th and the 20th century.

Historical BackgroundSan Damiano was established by the Commune of Asti in 1275. Fol-lowing the defeat of the Angioini at Roccavione, the people of Asti de-stroyed all their enemies’ fortress, laying siege to Alba and demolishing all the castles of Astixio (a powerful commune on the left of the river Ta-naro), guilty of alliance with Carlo d’Angiò. The Astixio land was home of the Garetti Ghibellines, in particular, the castles of Gorzano, Castelnuovo and Lavezzole.

There was also the fortified village of Marcellengo (now Torrazzo) go-verned by the Benedictines but with great influence from Asti. All these defenses were destroyed by the people of Asti, who took advantage of their victory over the Angioini to eliminate their neighbour. They forced the defeated population to build a villa nova, in the allied territory of Mar-cellengo (dismantling the old fortress). They chose the plane which was already home to the antique Marcellengo market and to the church of San Damiano.

Today, the perfect geometry of the historical town centre tells how the aim of the people of Asti was to build a defensive “oppidum” to provide protection against Alba: the fortified “villa nuova” was soon heavily popu-lated, becoming one of the mainstays of the Asti area’s defence system.San Damiano remained permanently linked to Asti, almost as an “extra muros” quarter of the town, and over the centuries that followed, it bore witness to the alternating fortunes in the struggles between the Guelph and Ghibelline factions, between the Marquises of Monferrato and the Viscounts of Milan, between the house of Savoia and Gonzaga, between

the French and Spanish. After the declaration of peace in Cherasco in 1631, San Damiano passed over to the Savoys who installed the Marquises of San Martino d’Agliè. These were followed by the Carlevaris, a family connected with the Ale-ramo dynasty. They brought many illustrious personalities to the town at the end of the 19th century. Today, the Palace where they used to live is the Town Hall.

The colours of the PalioSan Damiano is one of the seven communes licensed to compete in the Palio of Asti (3rd Sunday in September), the oldest in Italy and an event during which the town relieves its glorious medieval past.

SANDAMIANODAGUSTARE“Wine is one of the greatest sign of civilization in the world” said one of the poets of the last century. Some other authors, echoing his words, said that wine is poetry, wine is wise and intelligent.

You won’t need to be an oenologist or an expert. The sensations linked to the bottle and the wine tasting are exciting but what really matters is the awareness that wine is the expression of a civilization and of a territory. It is like a poem since you can taste it better and you really understand it only when you know the poet’s life, his personality, all his works, when you become familiar with the environment where he was born and grew up, with his education, with his world.

The nobility of wine is due to the fact that it isn’t an isolated thing that can be judged just through a glass, on the contrary it’s something closely linked to the place where it comes from, to that land, to the strain to tho-se hands who have loved it from the wineyard to the cellar.

Page 11: Brochure - ENG
Page 12: Brochure - ENG

A way to go towards a territory and to hug its history is to enter in a wine cellar to discover that there is a type of wisdom that can be bottled, pre-served, told and handed down.

To book a visit, a wine tasting or to buy good wine directly from the pro-ducer in one of San Damiano d’Asti’s wine cellars, visit Piemonte On Wine web site. You will find a list of the cellars with detailed information about addres-ses, telephone numbers, opening hours, services provided, kind of wines produced. You can also make a search on the basis of the type of wine you wish to taste simply selecting the wine denomination.

SANDAMIANODAVIVEREFiera del CAPPONE NOSTRANO (Local Capon Fair)DecemberThe municipality of San Damiano d’Asti aims to protect and to increa-se the value of agricultural products, typical of the farming tradition. It promotes not only the good wine but also the well-known local capon, protecting the breeding and improving the quality of the avicultural race bionda piemontese, introducing eco-friendly, sustainable breeding tech-niques and supporting short supply chains.During the fair there will be an exposition and the sale of a thousand spe-cimens from more than thirty breeding farms. Followed by the gastrono-mic festival which involves all the restaurants and the accommodation facilities of the village.

Fiera del TARTUFO ( Truffle Fair)NovembreWhen we talk about November in San Damiano, we also talk about truf-fle. It’s a resource that draws the attention on its own in autumn. Our territory has increased the value of this product, thanks to the industriou-sness and the intelligence of the people, careful to the traditions but at once up with the time. They have increased its value thanks to the land-scape, the typical food and the good wine. The fair aims to the quality, the protection and the promotion of this

excellent product, that comes from the ground in order to tell about itself and its territory.

Fiera di SAN GIUSEPPE (San Giuseppe Fair)MarchDuring the historical San Giuseppe Fair, Alla corte del vino Barbera (At the Court of Wine Barbera), every year a different culinary guest comes from kitchens that are more or less far away, in our squares and on our tables. To welcome visitors there are more than three hundred stalls along the main street, a great exposition of agricultural equipment, wine and food stands, cultural events, such as meetings or exhibitions in the gallery of the historical City Hall.

Fiera dei SANTI (All Saints’ Day Fair)NovemberThis fair takes place on the first Sunday and on the first Monday after All Saints’ Day along the streets and in the squares of San Damiano. The-re are more than three hundred stalls, a great exposition of agricultural machinery, an exhibition of courtyard animals, wine and food stands and shows of the flag-waver group of San Damiano d’Asti.

SANDAMIANODAVISITARESan Damiano opens its front doors and welcomes us for a calm walk through churches and historical palaces and along its corridors of stre-ets, arcades and squares. There are many corners where you can take a moment with curiosity to discover and admire, letting art and history make you feel small, but in the right way, like both know how.

Page 17: Brochure - ENG

The residential area has a geometric form that is typical of Roman for-tifications; it was surrounded by four bastions which are now beautiful tree-lined avenues with linden and sycamore trees. Nowadays the ful-cores of the village are the main street Roma and the central square Libertà.Coming from Asti we’ll find the church Ss. Cosma e Damiano (1400), with its imposing Baroque façade and inside three decorated naves pain-ted in fresco. Next to the church there is the bell tower which was the old defence and, on the other side, the church Confraternita dell’ Annunziata, built in 1500. These three buildings create a place that has a characteri-stic beauty.

In the street Roma we see the cobbled paving, that covers the entire hi-storical town centre, the continuous sequence of arches and the antique wooden vaults of some buildings. A few steps away there’s the main square Libertà, with the church San Giuseppe (1700), that is one of the most beautiful Baroque churches in Piedmont, and the ancient Town Hall: Palazzo Carlevaris (1700). Inside, the sumptuous noble halls are rich with stuccoes and well conserved frescos.

Walking alone the street Via San Vincenzo, we’ll find the church San Vincenzo Martire, that guards a fabulous and high-value seventeenth century canvas depicting the victory of the Christians over the Turks in Lepanto.

A walk, to discover the art and the history of San Damiano d’Asti

THE OLD TOWN CENTRE

Page 18: Brochure - ENG

At the end of the street Roma we’ll come in the square Camisola, where the new part of the village begins. If we turn to the left, after few steps in the shade of the trees, we’ll see the white staircase, that leads to the square Piazza 1275, where shows and events often take place.

Walking along Montebello or Magenta rampart, on the opposite side of the village, why not take a break in the regional wine shop? The goal of its activity is to protect, to value and to promote both the wine- and viticul-ture and the culinary typical traditions. Barbera? Freisa? Grignolino? We have an embarrassingly wide choice... cheers!

SANDAMIANODASCOPRIREAnother point of view from which you can watch these places: the saddle of a bicycle. Or, more simply, a comfortable pair of shoes to switch off from the stress of your everyday life and to give you, as a gift, a day out in the nature, along a pathway drawn for you.A walk through the green of the meadows, stopping for a while and liste-ning, getting rid the superfluous is enough to understand that the man doesn’t need too much to live well.

Thanks to the variety of our landscape, with his fields, his vineyards and woods, there are paths to suit every taste. If you feel like wearing trekking boots, having a relaxing ride up and down on the hills with your family, or you want to put on trial your MTB on dirt tracks, we have the path for you.

You’ll find a lot of suggestions on www.sandamianoda.it. Come and di-scover us!

The white truffle (tuber magna-tum pico) is the most interesting variety in our region and the most precious and appreciated of our cuisine. It is a spontaneous variety of tuber which cannot be cultiva-ted and its availability depends on a number of factors such as climate but also human behavior and land use.The protection, the safeguard and the promotion of the land where truffles may thrive is one of the objectives of the municipalities of San Damiano d’Asti and Cortazzo-ne together with “Terre di Tartufi” Organization. The “adopt a white truffle tree” ini-tiative aims to promote our terri-

tory at national and international levels. Our region with its touristic, cultural and environmental at-tractions, will see a new initiative: a gastronomical tour of our area in the province of Asti.

Adopt a white truffle tree

Page 23: Brochure - ENG

There are two possibilities: the annual fee of adoption has been fixed at euro 250 (shipping costs excluded) for 100 g of white truffle and euro 125 (shipping costs excluded) for 50 g. Both possibilities include:

Entrambe le adozioni prevedono inoltre:

• The choice of tree in the preferred truffle zone;• name, surname and nationality of the person adopting on the adopted

tree (from the second year);• The certification of adoption, the photograph of the tree and the truf-

fle area;• The possibility to visit the truffle area and to participate for free, as

a companion, to the search for the “Grey Diamond” also during night excursions;

• The possibility to donate the tree to others;

• Information on the web site www.terreditartufi.it about the quality and quantity of the seasonal truffle and about the cultural and gastrono-mical events.

SANDAMIANODALEGGEREA walk, a journey. A bench or a train wagon.“The journey is never over. Only travellers come to an end. But even then they can prolong their voyage in their memories, in recollections, in sto-ries. When the traveller sat in the sand and declared: “There’s nothing more to see” he knew it wasn’t true.

The end of one journey is simply the start of another. You have to see what you’ve missed the missed the first time, see again what you already saw, see in the springtime what you saw in the summer, in daylight what you saw at night, see the sun shining where you saw the rain falling, see the crops growing, the fruits ripen, the stone which has moved, the sha-dow that was not there before.

You have to go back to the footsteps already taken, to go over again or add fresh ones alongside them. You have to start the journey anew. Always.“

There are different ways of travelling, one of them is just sitting and ta-king a book.

READ ON THE ROAD

Page 25: Brochure - ENG

On the road, following this itinerary, you’ll find words of writers, unpre-tentious. They are there, just to be a starting point for a reflection on the meaning of the journey that we are going to take, on the sense of a pause that is hurrying, running, flying. Have a good reading.
