The costs of unethical behaviour

Unethical behaviour of employees and managers poses a serious challenge to organisations

worldwide. Organisations are harmed by internal unethical behaviour by employees who

intentionally misuse their occupational position for personal gain, e.g. through the misappropriation

of organisational assets, corruption or financial statement fraud. Worldwide, and on average,

organisations are estimated to lose 5% of revenues to these types of intentional organisational

fraud. Consequently, this translates to an estimated global fraud loss of nearly $3.7 trillion in 2013.1

Furthermore, organisations suffer massively

from unethical behaviour of employees

towards external parties when this comes to

light. Think of the recent Volkswagen

Dieselgate, which could cost the German

automaker up to $34.5 billion, through

government and private fines and

settlements, recall expenses and the loss in

future sales.2 Another recent example is the

Libor scandal, in which employees of ten

international banks manipulated the Libor

interest rate for their own gain. Together

these banks were fined over $6.0 billion in

regard to this scandal.

However, these figures are not a given: there are ways to enhance the integrity of your organisation

and thereby minimize the chances of your employees engaging in unethical conduct, together with

the accompanying costs of these behaviours. But how do you create an ethical organisation?

What makes an organisation ethical?

The behaviour of its employees are what makes an organisation ethical or less than ethical. Every

day employees have to make dozens of ethical decisions on their jobs. These vary greatly in their

magnitude, from deciding whether or not to take some pens and printing paper home for private

use, to deciding whether or not to correctly inform a client about the downside of a product, or to

grant a big assignment to one of your friends.

The outcome of these decisions result from a complex combination of individual personalities, the

organisation’s structures and procedures concerning ethical behaviour, and the organisational

culture and group dynamics. To effectively improve the integrity of your organisation all these three

factors need to be addressed. Simply implementing a code of conduct or strict regulations is

insufficient, nor is it effective to only fire all employees who have committed unethical practices.
