  • Bringing safety, energy-efficiency and eco-friendliness onboard

After a brief period of continuous growth, shipbuilding is continuing to manage contraction anddownsizing due to industrial overcapacity and an overabundance of ships of all categories. This has led to stiff competition and reduced profit margins for both shipbuilders and owners.

However, the time is ripe for a rebound in new builds based on a number of key evolutionary factors, all of which are dependent on high-performance cable solutions and services.

The first is the wish to improve onboard safety in terms of enhanced fire protection, and Safe Return to Port (SRtP) demanded by large cruise ship-builders. New regulations are demanding fire-resistant cables that can function for longer periods of time, increased cable redundancy, and high durability for rough seas and severe climatic conditions.

There is also a pressing need to improve operational efficiency and fuel economy in an era when fuel costs have become burdensome. Engineering innovations, like hybrid gas-electric propulsion systems, exhaust-driven electricity generators, and smart VFDs are all cable-based solutions used both for retrofitting existing ships and building a new generation of energy-efficient Eco-ships.

Finally, there is a call for environmental advantages in terms of reduced carbon emissions to ensure that shipowners can meet growing regulatory responsibilities. Once again, through eco-friendly designs, the elimination of hazardous materials, product environmental information, and even recycling during upgrades and refits, Nexans provides just the right cabling solution.

What you expect from a cable producer

  • Nexans is a marine cable leader and innovator. Rather than depend on separate suppliers, Nexans draws on its own production facilities in Europe, Asia, North and South America to produce every type of cable used on a modern vessel, from bulk carriers, anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) ships, ocean station vessels (OSVs) and offshore projects, including FPSOs, to cruise liners and oceanic research ships.

A truly global manufacturer and supplier, Nexans provides a wide family of cables for ships and offshore platforms being built around the world. In fact, Nexans and its Kukdong subsidiary currently supply more than 20% of the international shipbuilding cable market.

With a vast product range, extensive production and research facilities, Nexans is continuing to innovate and develop new products and services for shipbuilding: making cables easier to install and more flexible, ensuring that they are operationally and environmentally safe, improving fire performance and survivability, and developing new customer services in design, custom cutting, labeling, pre-assembly, and just-in-time delivery worldwide.

To meet new Safe Return to Port regulations, Nexans has developed various solutions designed with nanomaterials. These special cables can withstand mechanical shocks and water jet, and continue to operate during a fire.

  • Medium-voltage cables

    Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) cables

A comprehensive range of SHIPLINK cables

Instrumentation, communication and control cablesTwisted pairs, with stranded conductors, these Halogen-Free and Fire-Retardant/Resistant (HFFR) cables carry vital technical information for sensors, measurement, control panel, etc. The Nexans range includes all cable types (collective or individual shielding, armored or unarmored). These light, compact cables (down to 0.70 mm2) are ideal for high-speed craft and express ferries.

Enhanced fire-resistant cablesFor tough requirements, Nexans supplies IEC 60331-1 and -2 fire resistant cables for power, communication, control and instrumentation. These cables are designed with mineral taping or INFIT based nanomaterials. On top of that, Nexans offers customized solutions to help shipyards comply with SRtP directives.High-performance fire-resistance cables withstand 1,000C for navy and offshore applications.

FLEXISHIP cablesWith an extremely small bending radius, these special

Medium-voltage cablesNexans produces MV energy cables for power backbone and propulsion (1.8/3 kV, 3.6/6 kV, 6/10 kV up to 12/20 kV). Like all Nexans shipboard products, these stranded copper cables are Halogen-Free Fire-Retardant (HFFR). Once the cable route is known at the ships design stage, Nexans can pre-cut and mark the cable (bulkhead point, beginning and end indicators) for faster, easier installation. For Meyer Werft shipyards, Nexans supplied 10 km MV cable for two cruise ships.

Low-voltage cablesFor onboard power distribution, Nexans manufactures HFFR low-voltage energy cables (0.6/1 kV), which are flame-retardant, generating low smoke and toxic fumes. These quality copper cables come in a variety of insulations, sheaths and armoring. Also, special flat cables running along corridors make it possible to quickly add lighting and power outlets using Rapid Connection Boxes.Nexans equips mega-yachts built in Kiel (HDW) and in Italy (Perini Navi, Benetti, CRN, Rossinavi, etc.)

maritime 0.6/1 kV general power and lighting cables incorporate three compact triangular energy conductors. In addition to being halogen-free and low smoke, they can be installed in 30% less pulling time in tight spaces, using less force. They are also easy to strip and install.Used in worlds first MCV (Eagle Texas), MOSE Project Lock barges (Venice), and cold-storage ships.

Engineering and supply chain servicesNexans extensive service offer includes inventory management, custom-tailored packaging, recycling, life-cycle analysis, technological advice (including design-to-cost) and personalized Extranet for tracing orders, creating pre-selected catalogues, etc.Our goals: on-time delivery, zero-tolerance on quantity, fast action worldwide, and full certification.

Cables contribute to green operations on offshore vessels in ice-locked environment

Nexans supplied MV energy cables for backbone and propulsion systems for two new Arctic offshore vessels being manufactured at the Chilean shipyard, Asenav, for Maersk Supply Service. New cable-dependent technologies are being used to achieve energy reduction of up to 25%. Unlike conventional supply vessels, all machinery is optimized for low energy consumption. Main and side propellers only rotate when needed. Ventilation of the engine room, cooling water to the engine and other systems are now being applied more intelligently to match the needs of the crew and propulsion system. The new vessels will be assigned to iceberg management, anchor handling, standby, and general support for offshore rigs operating in Canadas northern coastal environment.
