The district cooling network:environment-friendly energy efficiencyfor the city
Far more than a comfort feature, air-conditioning in buildings has become an urban development issue. In addition to climate change
and urban growth, changes in architecture and regulations are leading to new climate management methods and energy efficiency
requirements in buildings.
District cooling is an essentiel energy for the sustainable city.
The district cooling network is a collective solution, which intelligently meets the air-conditioning needs of dense urban environments
because of its strengths in terms of efficiency. Energy efficiency: the energy consumed to produce chilled water is significantly lower.
Environmental efficiency: the local natural resources available are used. Shared and virtuous efficiency: by comparison with an
equivalent pool of stand-alone air-conditioning units, all the drawbacks (environmental, health, aesthetics) are minimized.
Discover the district cooling network and combine efficiency with urban ecology.
AN ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY AIR-CONDITIONING SOLUTION IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
1Meeting cooling needs in a dense urban environment
CLIMESPACE IS A GDF SUEZ CENTRE OF EXPERTISEFOR DISTRICT COOLING NETWORKS
A pioneer and international leader in district cooling networks, CLIMESPACE (a subsidiary of Cofely-GDF SUEZ Energy
Services) is operating and developing a network in Paris that is one of the largest in the world and the largest in Europe:
7 production sites and 3 energy storage sites, delivering almost 400 GWh per annum of cooling to over 500 buildings,
via a network of 70 kilometres.
CLIMESPACE is certified ISO 14001 (Environment) and OHSAS 18001 (Health and Safety). As a centre of expertise within the GDF SUEZ Group, CLIMESPACE brings its know-how to district cooling system projects
all over the world.

The district cooling network:anaturally efficient solution
Energy savings, use of l ocal natural resources, flexibility and security: the district cooling network offers
many advantages compared to stand-alone air-conditioning systems. This collective system is a factor for
energy efficiency in itself. Adapting to the local conditions and needs, it provides cooling while protecting
the environment and lifestyle quality.
5Better production and distribution of air-conditioning
ICE STORAGE
STAND-ALONE AIR-CONDITIONING UNITS
STAND-ALONE AIR-CONDITIONING UNIT
AUTOMATED ENERGYTRANSFER STATION
It intelligently transfers cooling from
the primary network to the secondary
network of each building connected.
It is far more compact than a stand-
alone air-conditioning unit and frees
up valuable space.
CONTROL ROOM
The control room ensures 24/7
monitoring of production plants and
energy transfer stations and remote
control of all district cooling network
facilities to optimize their operation
in real time.
CHILLED WATER STORAGE
ENERGY STORAGE
In the form of ice or chilled water, it provides
a better way to respond to demand.
Firstly, it reduces the use of chilled water
production machines during consumption
peaks or daily or seasonal highs.
Secondly, it assures the continuity
of the cooling supply even when production
plants are down.

COP* OF DIFFERENT COOLING SYSTEMS
CLIMESPACENetwork in Paris
Stand-alone unitCooling tower
Stand-alone unitDry cooler
*COP: Coefficient of Performance. This is the ratio between the effective energy (coolingdelivered) and the energy consumed (the energy required to produce cooling). The higherthe COP, the more efficient the production method and the greater the energy saving.
Source: survey by cole des Mines (National School of Engineering), 2003.
DISTRIBUTION NETWORK
It is entirely underground and carries chilled
water from the production plants or storage
tanks to the energy transfer stations. It has
two pipes: one to supply chilled water,
the other to return heated water.
PRODUCTION PLANT
It houses the electric-powered production facilities
that produce cold in the form of chilled water
(between 1 and 5C) with the best possible energy
efficiency. The heat released by the production
equipment can be evacuated via dry or wet cooling
towers, or when the local situation permits,
via systems using surface aquatic resources
(3 CLIMESPACE sites in Paris use water from
the Seine in this way).
RIVER, LAKE, SEA
A nearby aquatic resource offers a dual advantage. Firstly,
the production plants achieve top performance throughout
the year, using the natural coolness of this local resource
to cool machines. Secondly, FREE COOLING can be
implemented in cold seasons. This involves directly using
naturally cold water in the distribution network. CLIMESPACE
is an expert in this technology, which results in considerable
reductions in energy consumption and CO2emissions.

District cooling: a solution managedfrom project to delivery
As a global operator, CLIMESPACE can be your single point of contact to develop and operate a cooling
network solution, from choosing the layout through to final delivery of the cooling. The priority is the same
at every stage, namely to achieve the best efficiency. There are many variables to improve performance,
such as the energies used, equipment chosen, management tools and advice to users on how to use
the delivered cooling.
