Junior Ice Hockey Game on March 10

By Paul and Tarrick

The team got to play against Glen Long Park. Ms Paufler took them to this game.

They won their first game 5-3. They did great in the game and showed lots of team-

work. Myles did amazing and saved most of the shots at the net. After their game

they got to do a skills competition and they got to meet P.K’s dad. They also met

Wayne Primeau. They got to drink free cocoa for their great season. They played

games with lots of team work and they played amazingly.

The team had fun and enjoyed playing for the season this

year. Thanks to Ms. Samuel and Officer Eric for helping

the team get prepared for their season. The team is lucky

and happy for the opportunity to have Officer Eric help

coach the team.

The team had a successful season showing sportsmanship

and responsibility and commitment to the team by show-

ing up for the games and practices. The team will be hop-

ing to have another great season next year.

Primary Floor Hockey

By Sophia

“What a game between the Maple Leafs and the Senators.” That’s right, the primary floor hockey season has started! The grades ones, twos and threes are divided up into four teams: the Maple Leafs, Flames, Senators and Canadians. They will be playing their games through-out March and April. The two teams that win the semi-finals will be playing against each other in the finals. These were held on Wednesday, April 8th.

Astrid in grade 3 really enjoyed being part of Primary Floor Hockey. She was on the Canadians. Astrid said “I liked it because we got into the finals. It was fun but we lost.” Congratulations to all team members, and to the Ma-ple Leafs who won the tournament!

Special thanks to Mr.Crifo for running these teams. Thanks also to the grade eight helpers and Ms. Samuel for helping out when Mr. Crifo was away. What a wonderful opportunity to play floor hockey this year!

Sports Awards Assembly

By Annie and Joyce

On March 13, the school held a sports assembly. Ms. Samuel started the assembly with some winter sports haikus. Ms. Christian and Ms. Dixon created a winter slideshow, featuring the sports teams, Carnaval, and field trips. Ms. Samuel and special helpers presented new Brock jer-seys. Lastly, Ms. Samuel and Officer Eric presented the hockey awards to the junior and intermedi-

ate teams. They were presented with medals donated by Officer Eric. The intermediate team was gifted new hockey sticks also donated by Officer Eric. We would like to say a big thank you to all the coaches, Mr. Tran, Ms. Rita, parent volunteers, and Officer Eric for such a great sports season! GO BROCK GO!

Cole’s Swim Meet

By Paul and Tarrick

This year, Ms. Samuel helped create Brock’s first ever swim team! Cole in grade 8 was its only awe-some member. He does competitive swimming al-ready. Cole placed 1st in two races. At the meet, they started off with warm up dives and drills. Everyone would get out of the water and then the announcer would call out the events. Cole did 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, and 50m backstrokes. They would sit out until they heard the call out for their races. Cole did well overall in the races. The races were hard and it’s just like track and field because it’s similar to the sprint races. He was super excited and rep-resented Brock really well. Great job, Cole!

Grade 6 Boys Basketball Tournament

By Amir and Vic

We asked the grade 6s and Mr. Hong about their basketball games. Mr. Hong is always busy coaching so unfortunately he can’t take pictures. The team played a great Bas-ketball tournament at Essex Public School. They won 2 games and lost 1. In the end, they all had lots of fun and they displayed good teamwork. They played against Essex, OOPS, and Suri.

Jump Rope for Heart

By Vanessa and Jahliyah

On March 12, Brock Public School held an assem-

bly to inform the school about the Heart and

Stroke Foundation. For the assembly a woman

came in to tell us all about the charity foundation,

and how we could contribute to their cause. For

the people who didn’t know what it was, she told

us that the foundation was created to help raise

money for people with heart conditions, and to

raise awareness about heart heath before prob-

lems occurred. To

help encourage stu-

dents to donate, priz-

es were introduced as

a reward for donat-

ing. But fundraising

isn’t the only thing

happening ! During

gym, we are now do-

ing skipping activities to

help promote heart

health. Remember, exer-

cise and keep your heart

healthy. Thanks to Ms.

Samuel for organizing

this important event.

Movie Night

By Michelle and Alisha

Lights, camera, action…

On March, 5, 2015 it was Movie Night at Brock.

The Students Council worked hard with Ms. Bettencourt, Ms. Christian,

Ms. Papel, and Ms. da Silva to organize this fun event. Movie Night was

a great fundraiser for the school. In the end, the students decided to

watch Big Hero 6. Lots of excited students

came to the gym that night...some even had on their pajamas! It was fun be-

cause there were comfy mats on the floor to sit on and most people brought

blankets as well. Before the movie, families were able to buy water and pop-

corn. This was a huge success because we sold out of popcorn and almost all

the water.

Everybody had a great time and we hope that the next Movie Night will be

just as successful! Gavin in kindergarten said “ I

really liked when they were bot-fighting and Hero

won the fight.” Quinn in kindergarten said ” My

favourite character is Hero and Baymax.”

Special thanks to the Student Council, all the teachers involved, the grade 7

Student Council members for coming to help sell the snacks, and everyone who

participated in Movie Night. We raised about $300 for the school. See you next

time!

World Water Day

By Joyce and Annie

On March 22, it was World Water Day. On World Water Day, you try to

raise awareness and save more water for the future. In one day, a Ca-

nadian uses 329L of water. We use a lot of water compared to other

countries such as Cambodia. One Cambodian uses 15L of water a day!

22 people in Cambodia can live off one Canadian citizen’s water sup-

ply. We are fortunate enough to have clean water

that is easy to access. Sadly, we abuse the right for

water, while others have dirty water to drink or

have to walk miles carrying heavy jugs .

Try reducing the amount of water you use. Take short showers instead

of baths. Wash your pet on the lawn to water the lawn as well. Leave

a large pitcher/container outside so when it rains you can use that

water. Try using these tips or create your own! Remember, just be-

cause World Water Day passed, doesn't mean you should stop con-

serving water! Every drop counts!

Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Papel

By Hemali and Talena

Congratulations

to Ms. Papel, for

being April's

teacher spotlight!

Ms. Papel is the

grade 2/3 teach-

er. Her favourite

part about teach-

ing is sharing the

love of learning

with her students.

She enjoys work-

ing with her stu-

dents on writing stories, math problems, and

learning about science with fun hands on

experiments. This term, Ms. Papel’s class is

working on exploring different communities

and the world for their social studies project.

Ms. Papel also really enjoys playing sports,

and is looking forward to coaching our Jun-

ior and Senior soccer teams this spring!

Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Basanti

By Vic and Amir We interviewed Mr. Basanti about his teaching career

and why he likes teaching. He had a lot to say. Mr.

Basanti said “I taught at Amesbury Middle School and I

was a Phys Ed teacher and a boys and girls coach for

basketball, volleyball, badminton, hockey, soccer, cricket,

track and field, cross country and softball.”

“I love teaching because we have the ability to shape

your future and to provide you with the opportunity and

point you in the right direction and to be a small part of

your origins as a student. When I see success it’s a very

great feeling.”

“I don’t have a favorite memory at Brock but I love com-

ing to work at Brock. There are so many exciting things

that’s happening at Brock and there are lots of great

teachers at Brock that make it great.”

Earth Hour

By Hemali and Talena

On March 28,

people around

the world turned

off their lights

from 8:30pm to

9:30pm. They did

this because they wanted to conserve electrici-

ty. At Brock, we celebrated from 2:00-3:00pm

on March 27. In room 21, the grade 7’s cele-

brated by turning off all the lights. They also

turned off all electrical devices such as: lap-

tops, computers, cellphones, iPods, and even

the smart board! It was a little weird without

any technology, but it was nice and peaceful.

Ms. Pringle’s, Ms. Papel’s, and Mr. Crifo’s classes

won the Green Team’s Earth Hour award be-

cause they did earth activities such as making

pledges to help the environment and learning

about energy. It’s important to conserve elec-

tricity to protect the

earth for a better fu-

ture, so be sure to al-

ways turn of extra lights

you don’t need.

People’s Theatre

By Isabella and Le

Rong

The primary classes went to Young People’s Theater on

March the 10th to watch the play Pinoc-chio. They had a great time. Jahmar said his favorite part was when Pinocchio's nose grew and when this guy was trying to open a window and kept failing. Ami-na said that her favorite part was watch-ing Pinocchio climb out of the window. Everyone enjoyed themselves at the thea-tre. They can’t wait to see another play.

1. Kelly had $24.

She spent 5/6 of her money on a

book. How much money did Kelly have left?

2. 40% of Monica's coins are dimes. The rest are nickels. She has 36 more nickels than dimes. How many coins does Monica have altogether?

Great Big Crunch

By Talena and Hemali

Crunch! Crunch! Crunch!

On March 12th,

2015 the grades 2-3

classes attended an

event called the

Great Big Crunch at

FoodShare. They

learned a lot about ap-

ples and did different

fun activities like com-

posting and tasting.

They also got to sing the Great Big Crunch

song with a musician.

I liked it! There

were lots of big

sweet apples! -Jett

We learned

Grade 2/3 Trip to Warren Park

By Isabella and Le Rong

On March 23rd the grade 2/3 class went on a trip to Warren Park, which is a nature school in the TDSB. There they got to go to different stations and did many activities. They did a mini scavenger hunt where they had to find things in nature. Aroon from Ms. Papel’s class said his favorite part was taking pictures of dif-ferent things in nature. When we asked Ava she said “There were real stuffed animals that we got to pet.” Overall they had a great time!
