The Fight for Civil Rights in the South combines two prestigious photography exhibitions covering the African American struggle for civil rights and social equality in the 1960s: Selma to Montgomery: Photographs by Spider Martin and Courage Under Fire: The 1961 Burning of the Freedom Riders Bus. Now through January 14, 2021.dhhrm.org Room 52 at the British MuseumRoom 52 celebrates Iran, which was a major centre of ancient culture. Iran was rich in valuable natural resources, especially metals, and played an important role in the development of ancient Middle Eastern civilisation and trade. Room 52 highlights these ancient interconnections and the rise of distinctive local cultures, such as in Luristan, during the age of migrations after about 1400 BC. During the sixth century BC, Cyrus the Great founded a mighty Persian Empire which eventually stretched from Egypt to Pakistan. Objects on display from this period include the Cyrus Cylinder and the Oxus Treasure. AUCTIONSAUCTIONS

Auction houses are the natural starting point for a collector. They guarantee a certain level of

authentication, establish a public market value, provide specialist knowledge, as well as provenance research and legal protection. Moreover, with the houses eager to sell and investors still apprehensive to part with large sums, buyers are more likely than ever to pick up quality lots at their low estimate price.

Among collectors, anonymity is often of paramount importance, and galleries and dealers are not always required to release information about their transactions. As such the natural place to turn when seeking an understanding of the art market is the most transparent one: the auction house. Auction houses set themselves apart by releasing just under 50% of auction data. This data is the only available on the market, and therefore represents the sole means for would-be collectors to assess an object’s commodity value.

As the pandemic has taken its toll on the global economy, auction houses traditionally reliant on the physical presence of an auction have suffered. According to market research firm ArtTactic, global auction sales declined by 49% in the first half of 2020. However, auction houses have shown imagination and a readiness to adapt, that many previously thought they lacked. Specifically, they have turned online, and in doing so have seen success. Online-only auction sales increased by 497% in the first half of 2020, with the big auction houses leveraging their online platforms, generating $412 million in online sales, up from $69 million during the same period in 2019.

The State of the Auction SectorTheodore Dingwall-Main

Buoyed by this performance, auction houses both domestically and abroad are preparing for a colossal end-of-year push to recuperate some of what they have lost in the last seven months. Though many will be welcoming a return to the physical auction, capitalising on their online accomplishments will remain a priority. Online viewing rooms have been overhauled for a more in-depth experience, and new platforms created to provide collectors with cutting-edge technology, making auctions more accessible and visually immersive. One example is a new ‘augmented reality’ platform from Christie’s which allows users to view upcoming lots in three dimensions through their smartphones. This provides the ability to see what a work would look like in-situ.

This is a pivotal moment for the auction market and an intelligent time to buy. Listed below is a comprehensive guide to upcoming international auctions. These include auction houses such as Heritage Auction House in Dallas, Artcurial in Paris, PBA Auctions in Brussels or Dorotheum in Vienna. They bring stock to the market for a global audience, at a variety of prices and in diverse mediums. So, as traditional markets falter, there are certainly opportunities for investors to diversify their portfolios.

The auction sector has never been more accessible, especially with the advent of high-grade digital platforms allowing collectors to buy at multiple different auctions, anywhere in the world, in a single day. However, it is important to understand the added variables associated with buying art internationally and how these add to the expense. One needs to consider costs for insurance, conservation, shipping,

estate planning and sales tax. Although these variables remain when buying domestically, prices do often skyrocket when a work is purchased abroad. Intimidated by these hurdles and the already existing opacity of the art world, new investors often turn to experts who can advise them on how, what and where to buy at auction. Typically, these come in the form of art funds, consultancies and art advisories.

If an individual does choose to go through such a firm, they will not only be provided with investment advice but will also be guaranteed ‘nail-to-nail’ support for all their collections. This means that the firm will take care of all the extraneous requirements, but this can be at considerable cost.

Art fund managers charge their fees according to the performance of the portfolio they are overseeing, thereby aligning their interests with those of the investor. Typically, art fund managers will charge an annual fee of between 1-3% of the total capital commitments made by the fund’s investors as well as a performance fee equal to 20% of any profits made.

Consultants and advisors demand a similar financial commitment but differ slightly from art funds as they charge with a sliding scale commission, depending on the value of the acquisition. Like art funds, advisors will usually take 20% for works under a certain price, around £50,000 to £100,000; however, that commission might go as low as 5% for works that exceed that value dramatically. Those who want exclusive advice should expect to pay around £75 to £250 per hour.

If a buyer considers these services unnecessary, or simply cannot afford the services of a third-party firm, the burden

of responsibility for buying, shipping, insuring, conserving and selling will fall squarely on their shoulders. After the initial acquisition (when buying internationally), shipping and the tax which comes with it will be the next greatest expense. Of course, the cost of shipping and the percentage for VAT varies depending on the location of purchase and the physical size of the object. For instance, France will charge 20%, The United States 8.87% and Belgium 6% in shipping tax respectively. Furthermore, all objects shipped to the UK are liable for a 5% import tax. It soon becomes apparent that there’s a lot more to pay for after the gavel has hit the block.

Buying art is a costly business, especially as fine art becomes increasingly viewed as a luxury commodity in the same vein as vintage cars, fine wines and bejewelled watches. However, there are opportunities in the fallout from the economic disaster of the last few months. The middle-market needs re-energising now more than ever; consigners are prepared to sell low and the digital marketplace is burgeoning as never before. The sales listed below comprise objects that span various different markets, are the product of eclectic cultural histories and traditions, and might just represent lucrative long-term investments.

Ewbank’s have discovered that a huge hidden production archive linked to Thunderbirds genius Gerry Anderson coming up for sale includes material so rare that fans will never have seen it before. Cleared from Bray Studios after Anderson’s production company wrapped up its final series of Terrahawks in the mid 1980s, the archive – valued at around £200,000 – became the property of Julian Bell, a driver and handyman at the studios who hid it away for more than 30 years until his death last year. Auction house Ewbank’s, in Surrey, who have been preparing the archive for sale on November 30, have catalogued production puppets, models of aircraft and other machinery, as well as sets. But specialist Alastair McCrea reveals that hidden among the pieces from Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Terrahawks, he has discovered original production puppets for Space Police, an Anderson project for which only one episode was ever made. However, it was never aired on television, before the idea was shelved and transformed into Space Precinct almost a decade later, so the puppets have never been seen in public until now. “It’s a miracle these have survived, and in such good condition,” says Alastair, “especially as so much production material was scrapped immediately after use. The sale is creating quite a buzz among the Anderson fanbase.” The auction, which features original production used ‘hero’ craft, each worth thousands of pounds, also includes an extremely rare surviving puppet head from the original 1960s Captain Scarlet series, Gerry Anderson’s personally annotated scripts and even storyboards for a series of Thunderbirds that was never filmed.

Everyone loves a bit of provenance, so let’s kick off with a bit on Saiphin Moore, co-owner of the

Rosa's café group. Her catchy tagline reads “Born in the East, raised in the East End”, but that’s perhaps a little brief, and doesn’t give her full credit for her years spent in Hong Kong and Jersey en route to starting a weekend stall in Brick Lane, which in turn led to taking over a greasy spoon café in Hanbury St, Spitalfields. Rather than go to the expense of re-branding, she elected to keep the name Rosa’s above the door. Fast forward a few years, and that earlier pragmatic economy has obviously paid off, with a private equity firm stepping in to take the Rosa’s brand onto greater things.

The trick with all of these operations as they move on is how to replicate the original charm and sense of place as you open more outlets, which is where a familiar menu and décor steps in. To help keep things on course (sorry, I couldn’t resist that one), some central prep is required, as nobody in their right mind would expect nearly 20 kitchens to be making all of the same sauces and marinades all of the time. After that, it’s all down to that final piece of magic

of turning the basics into an appetising thing of beauty.

Rosa’s is currently running a Welcome Back menu, which is also available for delivery and click-and-collect. Aside from the sheer social joy of eating out, you also get access to the cocktail list: try the Appe-Thai-Zing, a mix of lemongrass and ginger Collins, Tanqueray gin and Asian botanical sour syrup, which makes the perfect start to a browse through the rest of the menu. As per usual with Thai food, not only are the descriptions enticing, the authentic names are both exotic and simple enough for you to want to try ordering in Thai. Shall we Fuktong Gaeng Dang,

or Gaeng Kiaw Wan? I'll have a peek at your Gai Tod to start (sticky tamarind wings) and my companion will go for the crispy prawns, followed by the Green Curry and Pad Thai.

The wings are pretty standard, but the sauce is delicious, and the crispy shallots have you crunching away chasing that elusive oniony hit. It’s rather the same story with the prawns; the playoff between the prawns and the sauce is where it's at. Madam’s Chicken Green Curry proves satisfyingly spicy, and with a decent hit of sweet basil, the perfect companion for her coconut rice. It's not always easy choosing a wine to go with Thai food, but something with

The pandemic has provoked hardship across many areas, not least the arts and events sectors.

Reliant on the physical gathering of people, the reality of social distancing has been, in many cases, simply too hard to negotiate. With significant restrictions also placed on travel in the last few months the art fair, in its modern incarnation, is all but finished until there is a return to pre-Covid conditions. Since TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair) in Maastricht was forced to close its doors mid-way

through operations in March this year, most major fairs have followed suit. However, the Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair has gone to enormous lengths to try to deliver an Autumn 2020 edition of the fair. Despite this effort, at the time of writing, due to the government’s announcement of stricter regulations, the Organisers are unfortunately now unable to proceed with a real-life event.

The Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair is now in its thirty-fifth year. Originally created by a decorative antiques dealer for the interior decoration market, it has grown to become an important event in the London art, antiques and design world. To learn more about the fair, KCW London sat down with the fair’s public relations representative Pippa Roberts.

Firstly Pippa, can you tell us about the history of the Fair?

The origins of the Decorative Fair lie in the fact that interior decorators were sourcing antiques for clients that looked great, had the right age and authenticity but were not necessarily the most historically perfect pieces. Painted furniture for example was allowed in the Fair as long as the original integrity of the piece was intact. So, the Fair gave a platform for pieces that despite having top level authenticity, weren’t shown in established London antiques fairs at that time. These fairs sold the most prestigious antiques exclusively. Their

date line was 1837, so even Victorian furniture was deemed to be too modern for them. There was a space in the market for a fair that catered to a “look”, and the fair has continued in that spirit. It is a practical, decorative fair, but obviously ‘decorative’ includes fine antiques as well as more unusual objects and art that you can ornament your home with.

How has the Fair expanded in the last few decades?

Originally the fair was purely antiques dating up to the Edwardian period. By the early to mid 1990s, there was a resurgence of interest in the art deco period and a number of dealers in that field joined the fair. As the decade progressed, the era of minimalism, a slightly dreaded word for the antiques dealer, appeared. This began to change the market somewhat, as a renewed interest in modern design, the period of the 50s and 60s, was embraced by the antiques world. Specialist dealers that sold Modernist stock first exhibited in the late 90s, in fact The Decorative was the first antiques fair to introduce this period. Interest in the industrial look also grew. The fair evolved organically as tastes changed and culture found new icons.

The latest thing is 1970s chic; very shiny, very sensuous, which decorators are keen on at the moment, so the fair has recently moved its date-line to 1979. It had previously been 1970. The Fair adapts as tastes alter; after all, style has been recycled in every century. Currently buyers are moving back to a comfortable, ‘country house’ layered look in their homes with a mix of periods, as if put together by successive generations – it has a comfortable, established feel.

Roughly speaking, around fifty percent of our exhibitors are specialists in a particular field, but the other half are included for their unerring taste and eye for the unusual. Our exhibitors represent work across multiple mediums and from all levels. The antiques business is a vibrant industry and the people that work in it are dedicated to what they do. They are small independent businesses; some have shops, some trade by appointment only, and until recently, some relied almost entirely on doing the fairs for their business. It is a very happy community which breeds a lovely environment to work in. For the people in this world, it is a way of life, more a

vocation; they are totally immersed and always on the hunt for the next great object.

How has the Fair adapted to the current crisis?

We have gone to great lengths to augment the Fair’s accessibility. We developed a fully interactive, three-dimensional virtual tour of the fair so everyone could be ‘at the Fair’ even if they couldn’t travel, especially our trade buyers, many of whom come from abroad. American antiques dealers attend the fair to buy stock because it has such a wide variety: English, French, Italian, Swedish, Danish, etcetera. We also put in place specialist buying services for collectors and art lovers, which we fully intend to keep in place

going forwards, as we develop new plans.

Do you think that the creation of digital platforms can be seen as a positive to emerge from the difficulties of this year?

An incredible positive; I think going forwards the whole art and antiques world will continue embracing it, because it really does open up the whole world to you. You are increasing your audience exponentially. Buying online has been a challenge for the antiques sector in the past due to the physical realities of the objects. Ten years ago, dealers felt that any buyer would need to see a piece in person, to experience the object. But gradually, mindsets have evolved, and with the reality of the circumstances we are facing today, dealers and buyers alike have to adapt digitally. And, when there is a pre-existing relationship between a dealer and a buyer, buying online becomes even easier, since there is an established trust and understanding of what the dealer sells.

Can you tell us about Battersea Park as a venue?

Everyone involved just loves being in the Park. It’s in London, but not in “the city”; surrounded by greenery, and convenient to get to. We can’t wait to be back there just as soon as we can.

Pippa Roberts was interviewed by Theo Dingwall-Main www.decorativefair.com

good body and fruit of your favourite colour will often prove surprisingly accommodating, and in the case of the Malbec, well worth a second glass. Although my Pad Thai with prawns didn’t have all the colourful bells and whistles you sometimes see, a clear plate and a satisfied smile are a good trade off, and no doubt part of the original authenticity that harks back to those early Hanbury Street days. This is very affordable food with happy and obliging service, and long may it continue. Rosa's, 36 Queensway W2, T: 020 3627 0170 or orderswift.com
