THE DPPS NETWORK

Founded in 2006 Democracy Prep Public Schools is a growing network of open-enrollment, high performing, public charter schools operating in New York City (Harlem and the South Bronx), Camden, New Jersey and Washington, DC. We will open a school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 2015. Built upon the principles of the “no excuses” Charter School Movement, employed by high performing charter schools nationwide, DPPS believes that a student’s zip code should not determine his or her destiny; that even the most disadvantaged students can achieve academic success up to and including college.

Our mission is to educate responsible citizen-scholars for success in the college of their choice and a life of active citizenship. A simple philosophy guides Democracy Prep staff, students, and alumni alike: Work Hard. Go to College. Change the World!

DPPS employs the five tenets of “no excuses” charter schools. Our students have more time to learn during an 8-hour plus workday, Saturday classes and access to additional summer enrichment. DPPS provides its scholars with a comprehensive and rigorous college preparatory curriculum. We hire just three percent of applicants to field our exceptional teaching staff. Our teachers use data to drive effective instruction. We provide a supportive and joyous culture so that scholars are excited to learn. DPPS adds three additional principles to this model. We accepts all scholars regardless of past academic or behavioral standing. We run our schools on public funds. We educate our scholars to be active citizens ready to change the world.

DEMOCRACY PREP AT BRONX PREP

Democracy Prep Public Schools is one of the only charter networks in the country that seeks opportunities to turn around failing charter schools. DPPS’s first turnaround was Harlem Day Charter School in 2011. Harlem Day, now Harlem Prep, went from one of the lowest performing elementary schools in New York City to one of the highest in just one year.

Democracy Prep is in the midst of working to turn around Bronx Prep Charter School in a similar way. It is the first high school turnaround that DPPS has attempted. We will be implementing our rigorous curriculum and graduation requirements over time, including New York State Regents Diploma with advanced distinction, Korean language classes and research/service projects known as the Senior Change the World Project.
