The AKU Society is a patient organisation for a rare genetic

disease. Alkaptonuria, also known as AKU or black bone disease,

causes severe early-onset osteoarthritis, cardiovascular

problems, kidney and prostate stones, as well as black spots

in the eyes and ears. Diagnosis is confirmed by a blood test,

screening for homogentisic acid. The AKU Society support

patients through access to the National Alkaptonuria Centre at

ARMA provides a collective voice for the arthritis and

musculoskeletal (MSK) community in the UK. Together with

our 40 member organisations, we work collectively and

collaboratively to make musculoskeletal disorders a priority

in policy and practice in the UK.

British Sjögren’s Syndrome Association

The BSSA was founded in 1986, as a registered charity, to raise

BSPAR Parent Group

The BSPAR parent group is a group of enthusiastic parents from

around most the UK who have experience of paediatric rheuma-

tology through our children, the majority of whom suffer with

JIA. The group is part of BSPAR (British Society for Paediatric

and Adolescent Rheumatology) - a specialist society linked to

the RCPCH (Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health) and

the British Society for Rheumatology. Our purpose is to repre-

sent views and experiences within these organisations and else-

where in order to inform and influence decisions.

Fibromyalgia Action UK

Fibromyalgia Action UK is a registered charity run primarily

by unpaid volunteers. The majority of volunteers are also

fibromyalgia sufferers who work extremely hard, despite their

condition, in order to forward the cause of fibromyalgia. FMA

UK was established in order to provide information and support

to sufferers and their families. In addition, the Charity provides

medical information for professionals and operates a national

helpline.

Hypermobility Syndromes Association

The HMSA is an UK based charity supporting both patients and

professionals, in education and raising awareness of heritable

disorders of connective tissue or hypermobility syndromes.

These conditions include acquired and biomechanical joint

hypermobility syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (all

subtypes), Marfan, Stickler, OI and PXE. We run

self-management programmes and provide information.

LUPUS UK

LUPUS UK is the only national charity for people with lupus

offering support through our voluntary network of over 20

Regional Groups. Our priorities are to increase lupus awareness

with the public and the medical profession, provide support

to our members, and raise funds towards research and Lupus

Scleroderma & Raynaud’s UK (SRUK)

Scleroderma and Raynaud’s UK is the only charity dedicated to

One of the oldest books in the Heberden Library, this slim volume is an anonymous collection of German verse concerning gout. The title translates as ‘Gout answers before the judge’. Gout was knownhistorically by the Latin name podagra.
