IT has long been recognised that the Vatican and Alex-andrian Manuscripts contain two different recensions ofthe Book of Judges. No one would venture to dispute thestatement which Grabe made in his Letter to Mill in the year1705: "omnibus mediocriter tantum Graecae linguae peritisprimo intuitu patet Vaticano et Alexandrino codice duas di-versas dicti libri (Judicum) versiones, vel saltem duas Edi-tiones saepissime ac multum inter se discrepantes contineri."Whether we should follow him further in his preference forthe text of the Alexandrian MS, and in his identification ofthe Vatican text with the Hesychian recension, are questionsnot so easily answered.

No final verdict can yet be pronounced, but a preliminaryinvestigation of the earlier chapters leads to the surmise thatthe true text of the Septuagint is probably contained neitherin the one nor in the other exclusively, but must be soughtfor by comparing in detail, verse by verse, and word by word,the two recensions, in the light of all other available evidence,and especially of the extant remains of the Hexapla.

In any case the differences between the two recensionsof the Book of Judges are so great that in the Larger Editionof the Cambridge Septuagint it will be impossible to pre-sent the textual evidence clearly if the text of alone betaken as a standard, the readings of MSS which containthe A recension being treated as variants. It will therefore be

necessary to follow the plan inaugurated by Lagarde in hisSeptuaginta Studien (Gottingen, 1891), and print the texts ofA and on opposite pages.Accordingly for purposes of collation a trustworthy Editionof the text of A for the Book of Judges in a convenient formhas become necessary. And the Syndics of the UniversityPress have decided to publish it uniformly with the ManualEdition, in the hope that some readers will find it a con-venient and useful adjunct to the first volume of that Edition.

The text of the MS has been closely followed, and everyvariant has been recorded in the foot-notes. It has not beenthought necessary to record the abbreviations. The proofshave been collated with the photographic facsimile publishedby the Trustees of the British Museum in 1881.

Dr F. G. Kenyon, Assistant Keeper of MSS in the BritishMuseum, has promised to examine, for the purposes of theLarger Edition, the corrections made by later hands through-out the O. T. Books in the Alexandrian MS. In thus sup-plying what Dr Swete has pronounced to be a real need',Dr Kenyon will earn the gratitude of all students of theSeptuagint. For the Book of Judges the result of his investi-gation is embodied in the notes of this Edition. That theMS has suffered less from correction in this Book than else-where will be seen from the following statement which he haskindly sent us for insertion in this Preface.

"The question of correctors' hands is not of much im-portance in the Book of Judges ; the corrections being few,and for the most part confined to the removal of obviouserrors. In the critical notes attached to the following text,A* denotes the original writing of the MS ; A^ corrections madeby the original scribe himself (which are almost always simpleamendments of slips of the pen, not implying any alteration

of reading) ; and A-'^ corrections made by the principal reviserof the MS. This is the hand which has elsewhere made alarge number of important alterations in the text ; but in theBook of Judges it is not much in evidence. In date it wouldappear to be not much later than the original writing, andmay be proifisionally assigned to the latter part of the fifthcentury, or the beginning of the sixth. In only two cases inthe present book are corrections made which appear not to beby either A' or A^ In one of these (v. 8, for .%)the date of the correction is uncertain, and may be quite latethe other (viii. 22) would appear to be of the fifth or sixthcentury."
