Henry Lamotte Oils GmbH is one of the leading brands for the supply and production of oils, fats, wax and other associated products in the field of specialised basic materials. We provide tailor-made solutions for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and chemical-technology industries.

Whatever our customers’ requirements, we can provide Lanolin and Lanolin derivatives in a variety of qualities. These products vary in many ways, especially in their chemistry, colour and water absorption capacities. For example, the guidelines of the European or US-American Pharmacopoeia must be observed for pharmaceutical applications; however, for cosmetic applications and in the technical field, less high-quality product solutions are often sufficient.

Lanolin is the complex mixture of wax esters, alcohols, free fatty acids and hydrocarbons obtained from raw wool wax. Raw wool grease is a secretion from the sebaceous glands of sheep, which covers the wool fibres. Depending on the breed of sheep in question, unwashed raw wool contains 8% to 16% wool wax.

Information and reports about the utilisation of raw woollen wax go way back to Greek-Roman antiquity. The term Lanolin (“lana” = wool, “oleum” = oil, fat) originates from this period. Today, raw wool wax is mainly extracted in China, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Chile.

The level of residue of pesticides1 and other chemical indicators is decisive for the quality of the Lanolin. We provide different qualities for different areas of application.

The highest quality standards are defined by the European Pharmacopoe-ia (Ph. Eur.) and the US-American Pharmacopoeia (USP). In the following overview, you can see the ideal variety for your area of application.

Although the colour of the Lanolin says nothing about its effectiveness and purity, it is important in many applications for aesthetic reasons. It is defined according to the Gardner colour scale2.

A complete overview of our available qualities can be found on the last pages. Please contact us for additional questions relating to aspects of any of our products.

Wool Grease Fatty Acids are a cost-effective alternative for technical applications and are used as a versatile raw material in rust protection, for lubricants, for cutting fluids and in the leather processing industry. We provide these in the following products: FFA 12 - 18 and FFA 25 - 30.

Derivatives: Wool Grease Fatty Acids

Technical Wool Grease is obtained by refining Raw Wool Grease with similar production processes to those used with cosmetic Lanolin, including bleaching, saponification, washing and dehydration.

Wool Alcohols

• Application as a w/o emulsifier with high water-binding capacity in dermatological formulations

• Used as a regreasing emollient in creams and ointments

Pharmaceutical areas of application

Other Lanolin derivatives

• Wool Alcohols can absorb up to 2,000% of their own weight in water and are therefore used as highly potent w/o emulsifiers in personal body-care products

• They function as a regreaser and emollient in cosmetic formulas• Compared to Lanolin, Wool Alcohols are less tacky and are easier

to absorb• The cholesterol contained in them improves the moisture retention of the skin

Cosmetic areas of application

INCI: LANOLIN ALCOHOL - CAS Nummer: 8027-33-6

Wool Alcohols are obtained by alkaline saponification and subsequent extrac-tion of the unsaponifiable content from wool wax. The wool wax is then deo-dorised and bleached. Their composition consists predominantly of sterols and aliphatic alcohols. They appear as a light yellow to brownish yellow brittle mass, whose consistency is kneadable on heating.

PEG-75-Lanolin is a polyoxyethelene condensate from pharmaceutical wool wax. It is a solid substance and is light yellow in colour.

PEG-75-Lanolin (ethoxylated lanolin)CAS Nummer: 61790-81-6

Other Lanolin derivatives

• It is particularly recommended for applications in watery or watery alcoholic solutions

• It has emulsifying, solidifying and moisture-enhancing properties

• Its extremely high viscosity makes it particularly suitable as an ingredient in shampoos and detergents.

Page 19: Broschure Lanolin/Wool Grease/Adeps Lanae...Lanolin/Adeps Lanae • Complex mixture of wax esters, alcohols, free fatty acids and hydrocarbons • Insoluble in water • Is able to

Lanolin Oil contains the esters of wool wax which are liquid at room tempera-ture. It combines the skin softening properties of wool wax with a liquid form, making it easier for the skin to process and absorb.

This white and nearly odourless powder is produced by extraction from wool wax with subsequent refining.

• Cholesterol is a lipid which exists naturally in the skin and an important life constituent for cell membranes

• Cholesterol has emulsifying and stabilising properties and increases the water absorption capacities for a formula. It also works as an emollient

• Cholesterol is utilised as a preliminary stage in the pharmaceutical industry for production at a primary stage, e.g. for vitamin D3 or steroid hormones

1 Pesticide residues Pesticide residues determine the quality of Lanolin and will be defined according to Ph. Eur. and/or USP with regard to their limiting values and/or thresholds and the application areas which are therefore appropriate for the utilisation of products containing them. For Ph. Eur. qualities with pesticide residue volumes of a maximum of 1 ppm, the following apply: - Every single organochlorine pesticide: 0.05 ppm max. - Every other pesticide 0.5 ppm max. maximum for USP qualities with pesticide residues in total from... - max. 3 ppm, the following applies: every single pesticide with 1 ppm max. - max. 40 ppm, the following applies: every single pesticide with 10 ppm max.

2 Gardner Designation for a colour scale (ISO 4630:2015) according to which clear fluids and other fluid-type substances are subdivided into single colour stages.

3 hypoallergenic Lanolin that has been subjected to a high level of cleaning is hypoallergenic due to the reaction to the free lanolin alcohol and therefore has a reduced potential for triggering allergies.

4 300 % water absorption Some Lanolin qualities can absorb up to three times their weight in water.
