  • INSTITUTE OF ECONOMIC SCIENCES

FOUNDATION The Institute of Economic Sciences (IES) is a non-profit public (state owned) institution, founded in 1958 as Department for Economic Research & Methodology Planning of Federal Bureau for Economic Planning. The Institute operated under this name until 1963 when, according to former Federal Government, it

became Yugoslav Institute for Economic Research. In 1969, the Institute got its current name. In 1977, the Republic of Serbia, based on legal authority, made the Right founding of the Institute so today the Institute is registered as an independent institute within the Ministry for Science and technology of Republic of Serbia. The Institute has the status of scientific institution of special public interest and importance.

  • INSTITUTE OF ECONOMIC SCIENCES 2

The Institute has always been oriented on Yugoslav basis in most positive sense. The “brotherhood and unity” was truly appreciated. The leading economists’ generations from former Yugoslav repub-lics gathered at postgraduate studies, organized by the Institute. Later, they gave remarkable contribution to the establishment of economic, educational and the completely social system of former Yugoslavia.

    I Floor

Shortly after its foundation, the Institute has become one of the leading scientific and research organizations in the country thanks to the business policy and development strategy that was based on openness, innovations and willingness to broaden the views. As en example, the operational research activities as one of the postu-lates of modern quantitative economy entered the economic theory and practice of ex - Yugoslavia through the contributions of Professor Horvat and his associates, only ten years after it appeared in Great Britain. In 1963, the IT center was formed and it was among the first at scientific, research and educational level in the country at that time. Two years later, 110 000 thousand dollars (even nowadays it would be the vast sum), was invested in purchasing one of the most sophisticated computers – Elliot 803, so the information technology was introduced into the field of economic researches in our country. What made the Institute so famous, not only in Serbia but in all former republics and a region, is surely, the Library. The stock of several thousand items (books, monographs, periodicals) made the Institute a leader in this field. It was said that the Institute’s library was one of the best professional libraries on the Balkan. Even to-

day, the Library is something, the Institute is very proud of. The IES Library is a depository library of UN, World Bank, IMF and OECD. Nevertheless, the personnel are the key factor of every successful organization. The qualitative human resources have always been the IES main goal. The generations of leading Yugoslav economists cooperated, researched, gave lectures or were educated at the Institute. Many well known recognized leading world economists were guests or visiting professors at post-graduate school or other activities held at the Institute. No doubt, the Institute presented a kind of bridge between the socialist Yugoslavia and western countries with developed market economy. Our research workers with their efforts and scientific research results gave remarkable contribution in making Yugoslav model of socialism different from socialism in other socialist countries of eastern block, and in making Yugoslav economy accept the certain elements of market economy.

IT room at I floor SLOGAN Led by the vision of some enthusiasts, among which, the first Director (who was on this position for 15 years), late Professor Branko Horvat, the IES recognized the highest values - openness, willingness to work, studying and training. These three ideas present the IES slogan and our establishment trademark:
