The media needs your help in order to effectively tell great stories and interesting news.

Publicity is free… but also needs to be deserved. The catch? You must seek the press you

know you’ve earned!

LOCAL, LOCAL, LOCAL: Local Media

From local newspapers to local blogs to local radio to local on-air news stations, your local media sources need to hear from you. Send them a press release, engage with them via social media and make your news their news.

NEARBY BUT NOT TOO CLOSE: Regional Media

Neighboring towns and regional areas are great places to expand your visibility. Reach out to the media in these areas to increase your chances of gaining press.

NATIONAL NEWS: National Media

Brick and mortar merchants often shy away from national press, but this does not have to be the case. Consider untraditional stories that could earn you press or share a small business success story. National media loves this.

Here’s How:

• Identify what you have done, are currently doing or plan to do that deserves some attention. Don’t be scared to think outside the box, as well! It’s not just about what you sell or the store you work within. It’s also about how you became a store owner, your small business lessons, your employees, your community involvement, your interesting vendor stories and more!

• Create a clear, easy to understand message surrounding the story you want to tell. Stay focused and deliver a message that is concise and interesting. When shaping this story into words, remember that media folks are busy – so only share what you have to in order to capture their attention!

• Organize your thoughts and create a press release to share with the media. Need to know how to write a press release? Refer to the January Retail Challenge on “How to Write a Press Release”

YOUR CHALLENGE?

1. Select at least one local, one regional and one national media outlet and pitch a story idea to them about your store. This counts for 3 total media outlets… although we encourage you to reach out to many more!

2. Identify a clear story idea for your media pitch, offering them insight as to why a story about your store / business / self would bring value to their audience

3. Create a press release to support your pitch, as well as use social media to gain additional attention from them in a professional fashion
