Broward College will be the focus of the entire state on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. when thousands of students, dignitaries, community members, reporters and politicians will attend the 2014 Gubernatorial Debate at Broward College. Held in the newly refurbished Bailey Hall on Central Campus, the candidates in this year's governor's race will spend an hour exploring the issues determining Florida's future. e debate is presented by Leadership Florida and the Florida Press Associa- tion and broadcast throughout the state on local stations. A Unique Educational Experience Intensive Visual Arts ProgramOpens Doors

Broward College students will have the rare and excitingopportunity to experience democracy firsthand by becomingactive participants in the political process, working toincrease voter registrations, and closely examining andaddressing key issues of this election season.

“I’m very excited about the debate being held at BrowardCollege,” said Stefan DaCosta, president of the LatinAmerican Student Association on Central Campus.“Not many people get this kind of educational and civicopportunity while they are attending college.”

Student life organizations on each of the Broward Collegecampuses will be partnering with the Broward CountySupervisor of Elections Office and voter registration repre-sentatives in an effort to help register as many people aspossible through a series of voter registration drivesscheduled in September.

e night before the gubernatorial debate, Broward College’sspeech and debate team will participate in a live mockdebate, which will be filmed at the College’s television studioat Central Campus and streamed online.

Broward College has launched the Visual Arts and Design Acad-emy (VADA), the first of its kind in Broward County. e acad-emy is housed at Central Campus and offers an intense, highlyselective and competitive program limited to 30 students a year.

“is program will not only guide students on the process ofmaking art, but it will also encourage them to analyze thecontent of their artistic creations, which will give them theknowledge, confidence and skills they need to move on to anyprestigious art program to further their education,” said ScottMiller, associate dean of the college’s Visual & PerformingArts Department.

Students must complete the College’s traditional enrollmentprocess and also submit a portfolio of 15-20 samples of recentartwork and an artist's statement. Senior art faculty jurors selectthe incoming class each year. Students are placed into groups of15 students to foster a collaborative and creative atmosphere. Atthe end of every year, students must resubmit their portfolios toprove their progression and remain in the program.

Hundreds of students are now taking classes at BrowardCollege's Miramar West Center located just east of I-75 atPembroke Rd. and SW 145th Ave. Focusing on acceleratedoptions, supply chain/logistics and general education course-work, the new center offers flexibility for working adults,according to South Campus President S. Sean Madison.Tech-savy students will find a fully wireless facility with latestin next-gen educational options -- including an advisingsystem that allows student to use their smartphones forappointments. BC Joins Ice Bucket Challenge Soccer Season Kicks Off New Era

When President J. David Armstrong, Jr. threw down the ALS IceBucket Challenge (see video here), members of the BrowardCollege tennis, baseball, soball and men’s and women’s basket-ball teams responded. e athletes joined with millions of othersaround the world to take the challenge, which was started byformer Boston College baseball player Peter Frates, who nowsuffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — or Lou Gehrig’sDisease — a debilitating neurologic disorder. e ALSAssociation had raised more than $100 million through theice bucket challenge to date.

e Broward College men’s and women’s soccer teams havekicked off a new era in Seahawk athletics as coaches VickyRuiz-Rosario and Munga Eketebi become the first full-timecoaches hired by the College. Ruiz-Rosario, who began work as apart-time coach last year, graduated from FIU and coached highschools and elite teams there. Eketebi returned to Broward fromMiami by way of College Station, Texas, where he operated ayouth soccer program at Texas A&M University. Eketebi, a nativeof Zaire, also played and graduated from FIU. e women'svolleyball team has also started its season.

Broward College's aviation programs were on display at Fun Dayat the Runway earlier this month at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport’s new 8,000-foot south runway.

e event gave people a chance to walk on the new runwaybefore it opened to the airplane travel. e event also featuredfood trucks, bounce houses for kids and airplane displays.Prospective students and interested visitors were able toexperience the College's portable gas-powered flight simulator.

Broward College Online’s new MOOC(massive open online course) CollegeReadiness courses debuted this fall. Freeto students and covering more than 60competencies in the areas of reading, writ-ing and math, the courses were developedby the College with grant money from theDepartment of Education. e self-pacedapproach of these courses allow studentsto improve their skills through materialsuch as lessons, self-assessments, tests,videos and game-based technology. eCollege plans to share these coursesstatewide in the near future, includingworking closely with high school princi-pals to make the courses available to highschool students so they are betterequipped and prepared for college.

e annual Welcome Back Faculty meet-ing at the Omni Auditorium on Northcampus was held last month and broughttogether new and returning facultycollegewide. e 2014 Endowed TeachingChair recipients — who receive a $7,500program stipend and a $2,500 professionaldevelopment stipend — were also recog-nized. e event gives attendees a chanceto meet and mingle with their colleaguesfrom all campuses and learn more aboutthe college by strolling through theMarketplace, a showcase for departments,programs and college services.
