Our Summer Reading Program helps keep students’ skills sharp over the summer months, so they return to school ready to learn. She will talk about her latest book, My Kitchen Year, which was published in September. We look forward to an evening of tasty treats and culinary discussion – all while raising funds to support the library! ALA Awards Barbara McGary, Shir- ley Alters and Robin Gloss- ner recently traveled to San Francisco to participate in the American Library Association annual conference. During the conference, the library received the pres- tigious 2015 Gale Cengage Learning Financial Development Award for the Own-a-Day program, which was recognized as an innovative, creative and well-organized fund- raising project. The library also was celebrated as a “superstar” for our out- standing efforts with the “Geek the Library” campaign. Although 3,000 libraries have participated in Geek the Library, the Brown Library was one of four libraries honored nationally for its efforts in connecting with the community. Library, will present the Oct. 2 program on the Stephen King novel, The Green Mile. The book is set during the Depression and tells the story of a prison ward superintendent and his encounter with an unusual inmate who has inexplicable healing abilities. The “green mile” refers to the last 40 yards a condemned prisoner must walk to his execution by electric chair. The Green Mile was published in 1996 as a six-volume series. Brigandi states that she selected this book for several reasons. It is not a typical “scary” Stephen King novel and thus will have wider appeal; was made into a critically acclaimed movie starring Tom Hanks; exhibits Stephen King’s incredible storytelling; and gives the reader an emotional journey. The story deals with the important message of human kindness, the theme of growing old, racial issues, the death penalty and other relevant philosophical issues that we struggle with today.

Born near Tampa, FL, Brigandi earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications-Journalism from the University of South Florida, and after moving to Pennsylvania in 2001, earned a Master’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Lock Haven University. Ms. Brigandi was employed by the Williamsport Sun Gazette from 2001-2013 where she worked as a copy editor and Lifestyle-Education editor. She has been with the James V. Brown Library since 2013. Brigandi resides in South Williamsport with her husband and their two young daughters. This may be the f irst Stephen King book to be reviewed at a Friends’ book review luncheon. However, it is Halloween and the perfect time for a great storyteller. Don’t miss it!
