  • Geo�rey Hill and His Books North Gallery, John Hay LibrarySeptember 1 – October 1, 2012 Kenneth Haynes, Professor of Comparative

    Literature and Classics at Brown University, curated this exhibit in honor of poet and former colleague Geo�rey Hill on the occasion of Hill’s 80th birthday. �e exhibit is organized around the ��een published books of poetry, from For the Unfallen (1959) to Odi Barbare (2012), and includes materials from Brown University Library’s general and special collections as well as books from the private collections of Haynes and Hill.

    Stamps of Maps, Birds, and FlowersAnne S. K. Brown Military exhibit room, 3rd Floor, John Hay Library September 1 – December 1, 2012

    Drawing from the country’s largest stamp collection held in an academic library, this exhibit features three examples of topical stamp collecting: maps, birds, and �owers. Among the map stamps featured is a reproduction of the 1507 Martin Waldseemüller world map, the �rst to identify “America.” �e stamp was issued in Germany in 2007 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the map’s printing. Other stamps in the exhibition include First Day covers and stamps displaying each of the ��y state birds and �owers.

    Rhode Island Slavery and the University Gammell Gallery, John Hay Library September 3 – October 5, 2012 Curated in support of the First Readings

    2012 program for the Class of 2016, this exhibit focuses on Charles Rappleye’s Sons of Providence. Using materials from the Brown University Archives and the Hay’s extensive holdings of primary sources

    on Rhode Island history, the exhibit provides an overview of how slavery, the slave trade, and emancipation functioned in the politics and social life of early Rhode Island, and the manner in which attitudes toward slavery shaped the founding and growth of Brown University in its �rst century.

    Ladd, Bryant, Orwig: �e Making of the Music BuildingLobby, Orwig Music Library September 4 – December 21, 2012

    �is new exhibit traces the history of the Orwig Music building. �e large brick mansion has served as a private hospital, and as classrooms and administrative o�ces for Bryant College. It began as a residence for a member of the Sprague family and later, a Brown alumnus, Isaac Gi�ord Ladd. �e display features photographs courtesy of the HELIN Digital Commons website and Bryant University, as well as photos and memorabilia from Brown University Archives. Since 1988 the Library has shared the building with the Music Department.

    Digital Scholarship Lab Opening Early OctoberEarly October heralds the opening of the new Digital Scholarship Lab in the Rock,

    featuring a large-scale visualization wall comprised of twelve 55" high-resolution LED displays with a total of 24 megapixels. Uses of the wall are limitless — from displays of detailed geo-spatial maps to interactions with complex visualizations; from community hack sessions to crowd-sourcing manuscript transcriptions, and more. �e Lab will provide a wide range of so�ware for scholars across the disciplines and will be available for classes, group sessions, and individual use.     Jude Ciccolella ’69: 9th Annual Wilmeth Endowed Lectureship in American �eatreMonday, October 15, 2012 • 7:oo pm

    Come to Leeds �eater in Lyman Hall for an evening with renowned actor Jude Ciccolella ’69. A reception will follow in the foyer. �e Don Wilmeth Endowed Lectureship was established in honor of Professor Don Wilmeth and his monumental contribution to the study of theatre at Brown. Jude Ciccolella, a stage, �lm, and television actor, as well as an active musician, graduated from Brown University in 1969 with a BA in Philosophy. �is event and reception are free and open to the public.

    Announcing �e Brasiliana Collection at Brown UniversityOctober 24, 2012 • 6:00 pmIn the Reading Room of the John

    Hay Library, Brown will launch the Brasiliana Collection and feature the newly indexed �omas E. Skidmore Papers, an anchor of the collection. A display including highlights of the Brasiliana Collection and items from the Skidmore Papers, and the new companion website to Skidmore’s textbook Brazil: Five Centuries of Change (Oxford University Press), developed with Brown students over the last two years, will be on view. �is event and reception are free and open to the public.

    Roger Stoddard on Early American PoetryOctober 25, 2012 • 7:00 pmRoger Stoddard, former Curator

    of the Harris Collection at the John Hay Library, and former Curator of Rare Books at Harvard, will speak in the Lownes Room of the Hay.

    �e talk will examine Stoddard’s research that contributed to his descriptive bibliography of early American poetry. �is talk and reception are free and open to the public and will be accompanied by an exhibit, �e Work of a Lifetime: Roger Stoddard on Early American Poetry and theCollections of Brown University, on view in the Gammell Gallery and North Gallery, John Hay Library, October 12 – December 14, 2012.

    �omas Horrocks on Lincoln’s Campaign Biographies November 1, 2012 • 5:30 pm�omas Horrocks, the Library’s Director of

    Special Collections, will give a talk in the Lownes Room of the John Hay Library on Abraham Lincoln’s 1860 campaign biographies and the role they played in shaping the Lincoln image. Campaign biographies from the Hay’s Lincoln collection will be available for viewing before and a�er the talk. A reception will follow. �is event and reception are free and open to the public.

    �riller Panel — Steve Berry, David Baldacci, R. L. Stine, Lisa Gardner, and Nelson DeMille November 15, 2012 • 6:30 pm

    Brown University Library and Friends will host a thriller writers’ panel discussion at Salomon Hall, followed by a reception and book signing in Sayles Hall, to introduce a �riller Writer Archive at Brown. Jon Land ’79, celebrated author, will moderate the panel discussion by well-known thriller writers Steve Berry, David Baldacci, R. L. Stine, Lisa Gardner, and Nelson DeMille. �is program, book signing, and reception are free and open to the public.
