The Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Control

Tower and support buildings represent some of

the United States’ most sophisticated facilities

dedicated to the sport of auto racing.

The Control Tower holds race control and security

functions for the oval track and also houses the

private hospitality suites for the Hulman-George

family, owners of the Speedway. The Media

Building is designed for Formula One but also

meets the needs of the Indianapolis 500 and the

Brickyard 400.

Browning Day is continuing its 20-year relationship

Browning Day Mullins Dierdorf was the Associate

Architect on the Lucas Oil Stadium project. We

worked with HKS Architects from Dallas.

Browning Day primarily developed portions of

the interior, including the private suites, the Colts

store, exhibit hall and meeting rooms, auxiliary

locker rooms, offices for first aid, security,

concessionaire and administrative staff, reflected

ceiling plans throughout and door schedules (there

are more than 1,100 doors).

Browning Day also developed the Pedestrian

Connector between the Stadium and the

Convention Center.

The Briner Sports Complex project is a three-

phase renovation and upgrade of the Ball State

University athletic facilities on the north side of

the campus.

The first phase, the Women’s Soccer Facility,

included the removal of a natural grass field

area and installation of a synthetic turf soccer

field meeting NCAA standards.

Phase Two was the renovation of the existing

track and field facilities which included new

synthetic surface, long jump runways and

sandfilled concrete landing pits, high jump facility,

javelin runway, and a combination discus and

hammer throw cage. Underfield drainage was

also installed in the throw sector area.

The final phase included the installation of a

new, modular press-box to service the soccer

and track facilities on a masonry storage

room base structure. Bleacher seating was

also added for soccer. A colonnade consisting

of masonry piers and a radiused metal canopy

was designed and constructed to announce

the main entrance to the Briner Sports Complex

on the west end of the site.

Victory Field, described as the “Best AAA

ballpark in America,” is a great addition to the

growing skyline of Indianapolis. The ballpark

has 13,000 fixed seats, 2,000 grass berm seats

and 27 luxury suites. Also included are a press

box and media facilities, administrative offices

for the Indians, home and visiting team lockers,

and concession and maintenance facilities.

The stadium stands on 13.9 acres of what was

a neglected corner of downtown Indianapolis

but is now a lush hub of activity. A natural grass

field system is incorporated in the asymmetrical

ballpark. The field also accommodates high

school, collegiate and major league exhibition

baseball.

Browning Day served as Associate Architect

on the original project in 1996. Since then, we

have provided architectural services for the

owner for numerous projects including adding

the “Cove” a food and beverage amenity space

on the left field line, upgrades to the suites,

several expanded amenity spaces, back-of-the-

house, and ticketing improvements.

The existing Duffy Bass Field was not a fitting

venue for the growing and successful athletic

program at Illinois State University. Our charge

was to improve the facility for athletes and

create an exciting, fan-friendly atmosphere.

The site placement of the existing field includes

a 14’ change in elevation from the spectator

entrance side. This aspect of the site allowed

us to create a concourse stadium design where

fans are situated at the upper level looking

down on the field. This created an excellent way

of allowing spectators to still feel and see the

ongoing game while participating in hospitality

and concessions areas. In the new design, 1000

spectator seats are situated into the existing

hillside. On the upper concourse level are the

media rooms, public restrooms, concessions,

tickets and hospitality deck.

campus near the 45/46 Bypass. The field is

100% artificial turf.

Highlights include new stadium seating, new

locker rooms, indoor and outdoor hitting

cages, turf fields, an 1,800 square foot press

box, a scoreboard, sports lighting and sound

systems, and two hospitality suites. The

complex also features ample parking, entry

plazas, picnic areas, concessions and restrooms

for fans.

The design uses an “open” concourse stadium

concept that seats up to 2,500 people, and

allows spectators to still feel engaged in the

ongoing game from hospitality and concessions

areas.

Ulmer Stadium UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLELouisville, Kentucky

Ulmer Stadium serves the University of

Louisville’s women’s softball team with a state-of-

the-art field and fixed seating for 800 spectators.

As a part of this “front lawn” to the University, the

field can be seen as one enters the campus and

from a major highway.

The venue features a gated entry of brick and

stone, and a fully functional press box equipped

with PA and music systems and TV camera

locations. The playing field is 220 feet from home

plate to the outfield fence.

Underfield drainage and irrigation systems help

maintain a healthy field, surrounded by park

landscaping.

The Ken Byers Tennis Center project is replacing

an existing tennis complex on the campus

of Georgia Institute of Technology. The site

components include 6 competition courts, 4

practice courts and an indoor tennis center with

6 practice courts. The competition courts will

have spectator seating on the south base line to

accommodate 500 fixed seats. Natural turf berm

seating will be provided at the ends of the courts

for lawn seating.

The indoor tennis center will be constructed of

a pre-engineered metal building that has been

architecturally treated to respond in kind to its

context and other campus facilities. Connected

to the indoor practice courts are locker rooms for

both men’s and women’s teams, training rooms for

the athletes, spectator seating on the upper level

that overlooks the practice courts, a team lounge

and coach’s offices. An upper level lobby within the

indoor practice center provides views out over a

entry plaza that affords views of the competition

courts.

Browning Day has had the pleasure of working

with the Association of Tennis Professionals

(ATP) more than three decades and has

performed architecture and planning services

for their complex in Mason, Ohio. This includes

a 10-acre master plan that doubled the size of

the practice courts, playing surfaces and seats,

in addition to adding a food court and other

hospitality areas.

The new Grandstand Court at Cincinnati’s

ATP Masters Series facility, the Lindner Family

Tennis Center, features 5,000 seats, including

900 box seats. The seats below the concourse

level are bleachers on treads, which are sized

for conversion to box seats.

A walkway at the top of the raised bleachers

connects to the main walkway of Center

Court, allowing spectators to move between

the two stadiums without interrupting people

seated to watch the match. ADA-compliant

accommodations and office space are located

below the bleachers on the east side.

Designed by Browning Day and completed in

1982, the Indiana University Natatorium set

the standard for competitive aquatic facilities

in the United States.

The 220,000-square-foot complex contains

three pools, including a 50-meter competition

pool, a 50-meter instructional pool and a diving

well. Its depth ranging from 9 to 10 feet, the

competitive pool ranks as one of the fastest in

the world.

The design of the space and the close proximity

of the spectators to the competition create a

venue for an athlete’s best performance. Up to

4,500 spectators can be accommodated by a

combination of chair and bench seating.

This facility served as host for the 1982 Sports

Festival, the 1987 Pan American Games and 11

Olympic Team Trials in swimming and diving.

Currently, Browning Day has been reengaged

to help design and complete upgrades to the

facility with a completion date of 2016.
