    Brownsburg Then and NowGood news everyone! Were going to spend the day

    exploring downtown Brownsburg on a field trip!

    Be sure to bring your lunch and wear a good pair of walkingshoes. We are going to visit some locations that areimportant in Brownsburgs history. We will also get to jumpback in time when you say the magic phrase with me Back in time to Brownsburg!

    Follow me in a single file line and we can be on our way.Oh and in case you didnt know, this is a very special field

    trip. Along the way you might see a Back in Time book.

    Destination: Brownsburg, IndianaWhen we arrive in Brownsburg we are going to visit several locations along

    Main Street. We will park the bus at the old library. Stop 1 will be the Historic Block. Stop 2 will take us to Walgreens

    Corner. Next, we will cross the street,

    being careful to watch for cars,and visit Stop 3 the CVS Corner. Stop 4 is the Bank Corner and

    we will be hungry! We can stopunder the trees at the bank andeat.

    At the end of our trip we canwalk to the old library buildingwhere the bus is parked.

    Stop 1: Historic BlockThis is the Historic Block.Look at the old buildings. Can

    you tell they have been herefor a really long time?

    I remember reading that

    these buildings had adrugstore and a newspaperoffice in them. I can seewhere a sign once hung on thefront of the first building. Do

    you see it? What shops are inthese buildings now?

    Lets count the windows. Whydo you think there were somany windows?Say it with me! Back in timeto Brownsburg!

    Can you count the windows better now? Look at thebeautiful trees that are on the street. There arent manycars here today! There are sidewalks on the street so thismust be after 1905. I know they didnt have sidewalks inBrownsburg until then.

    Activity: Why dont we make a list of things that mighthave been sold in this corner drugstore. Lets use the signsfor clues!LKC2012

    Brownsburg Then and Now Stop 2: Walgreens Corner

    OkayFollow me! This is Walgreens. Its kind of funny to visit Walgreens on afield trip! This corner was very special a long time ago. There used to be agrocery store here. This is a busy corner. There are lots of cars driving by. Ibet this was a good spot for a grocery store!

    People could walk to the grocery store to shop just like we walk to Walgreens toshop. Can you close your eyes and imagine an old grocery store? What do youthink they sold here? Are you ready to say it?Back in time to Brownsburg!

    You have a very finestore here. It is nicethat you stand outsideand greet yourcustomers. I wonderwhat Mr. Kennedywould think aboutWalgreens?

    Brownsburg Then and Now Stop 3: CVS Corner

    Be careful now! Lets cross at the light to the CVS corner. This is another busycorner. Can you see the trees behind the store? They have been there for along time. I bet many years ago some children about your age looked at thesame trees! The trees may be the same, but the store isnt the same buildingthat was here a long time ago is it? Do you want to guess what stood here

    before? Are you ready? Back in time to Brownsburg!

    Welcome to theCorner Caf! 1938

    Did you guesscorrectly?

    The Corner Caf lookslike a popular place toeat. You can see it isdecorated with flags.

    I wonder what holidaythey might becelebrating?

    This building was herein 1871! It was known

    as the Hunter Building.Before it was a caf ithad the first bank intown and the firsttelephone. Muchdifferent than CVS!

    Activity: Lets design a menu. Putitems on the menu that they mayhave served at the Corner Caf.For fun we could add pictures andprices.

    Brownsburg Then and Now Stop 4: Bank Corner

    Its time to walk to our last

    stop. We can cross the streetat the light. Watch the traffic.

    Here is the bank building. Ithasnt always been here. Itlooks pretty small doesnt it?

    Can you see the tiny windows?There arent very many ofthem.

    The bank is a place that peoplego to deposit and withdrawmoney. But it wasnt the firstbuilding on this corner. Are youready to see the first buildingthat was here? One last time,say it with me Back in time to Brownsburg!

    Dinwiddies Groceryand Notions

    So this was thefirst building on theBank Corner! Lookat all the windows.They are muchlarger than on thebank. Do youremember whythere were so many?

    Do you see the dirtsidewalks? I bet itwas dusty back then.I wonder what itwould be like if itrained?

    Activity: There are so many things in this picture!We could make a list of everything we see. Wecould count windows, wheels, or people. Letssee.why dont we write a story about one of thepeople in the picture! What are they doing? Wheredid they come from? What are they shopping for?

    Design your owntown and thebuilding that youwould have.
