is upon us with festivities beginning Thursday Decem-ber 6th around 6:30 p.m. with the Lighted Christmas Parade presented by South-side Church. The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce and KTAB TV present the Fourth Annual Christmas Under the Stars Festival Friday December 7th and Saturday December 8th at the Depot Plaza Complex, Adams Street Community Center, and the Railroad Museum. Be serenaded by the sounds of Christmas from local talent and community choirs while you give Santa and Mrs. Claus your wish list. Funnel Cake, homemade chili, sausage wraps, and hot chocolate are a few of the tasty treats to try while the kiddos build crosses and decorate Christmas orna-ments, cookies, and pet food bowls. Glide around the ice skating rink then stroll to the Railroad Museum and experi-ence Choo Choo Christmas. While you are there, support a local nonprofit and bid on a fully decorated Christmas tree, ride the mini train, and vote for your favorite Christmas photo. If you have a competitive side, enter one of several competitions such as Santa’s Sleigh 5K run, the Amazing Race, the Photo Contest, or Treats for Santa bakeoff. Bring your four legged family members to the Depot on Saturday for the Best Christmas Pet Costume Contest hosted by the Corinne T. Smith Animal Center. We can’t forget to mention Christmas Karaoke – you know you can’t resist the urge to belt out your favorite holiday tune! With so many

activities, we can’t list them all. Holiday Hours

Thanksgiving HoursThe Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce will close at noon on Wednesday, November 21st for the Thanksgiving Holiday

and will reopen for normal business hours on Monday,

November 26th.

Christmas HoursThe Brownwood Area Chamber

of Commerce will be closed from December 24-January 1

for the Christmas Holiday. We will reopen for normal

business hours on Wednesday, January 2, 2013.

The Chamber’s Monthly Luncheon will be Friday, November 16 at the Brown-wood Country Club from 11:30 AM to 1 PM. The luncheon is open to members and guests. It will feature an interesting program, door prizes, introduction of new members and the “Aces Wild” Cash Drawing—which features a guaranteed winner each month. In addition, Chamber staff will report on current and upcom-ing projects, introduce new members and share important announcements.

The featured speaker will be State Representative Jim Keffer, a conservative family man, small business owner and lifelong Texas Republican Party leader. Jim and his wife, Leslie, first met at a church summer camp in East Texas. This year, they will be celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary and have 3 grown sons and two grandchildren.

As president of EBAA Iron Sales, Inc., Jim is one of the largest employers in his community. He is a graduate of Texas

Tech University, and rep-resents House District 60 which encompasses Brown, Eastland, Hood, Palo Pinto, Shackelford and Stephens counties.

In 1997, he became the first Republican to ever represent District 60. And has won overwhelming reelections ever since. For 2012, Jim served as Chair-man of the Texas House Committee on Energy Resources. He also serves on the House Calendars Committee, the Natural Resources Committee, Redistricting Committee and Texas House Republican Caucus.

A legislative leader in past sessions, Keffer has previously served as chairman of other House committees including: Ways and Means, Economic Development,

and the Select Committee on Property Tax Relief.

Jim has received numer-ous awards including: the Texas Association of Business “Champion of Free Enterprise Award”, the Republican Party of Texas Chairman’s Circle Award, the Texas Medical Asso-ciation’s “Texas Medicine’s Best Legislator Award”, the Texas Industrial Vocational Association’s “Outstanding Leader Award”; the “Cham-pion Award” from the Can-cer Prevention and Research

Institute of Texas Foundation; the Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers Asso-ciation of Texas “Golden Flame Award”, the Texas Academy of Family Physician’s “Patient Advocacy Award” and he was recognized as a “Star for Rural Texas” by Texas Farm Bureau. Additionally, he has

been named one of the best members of the legislature by Texas Monthly, Capitol Inside, and the legislative news service Gallery Watch.

Jim has also given generously with his time in the community. He has served as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher in the first Baptist Church of Eastland, Past President of the Eastland Little League and is active with economic development through his local Chamber of Commerce.

All parade entries are $10 through November 15th, then will be $20 November 16th- 26th. Floats are encouraged to be lighted – the more the merrier – and will be judged December 5th for the judging pur-pose Lineup will begin at 4pm at the Train yard south of Washington Street behind the Train museum. Every entry will have a designated number that will be given to you at the check in tent at the coli-

seum. Please remem-ber, no candy or any items may be tossed from the floats or vehicles. If you wish to provide such items you must have “Walkers” that move along with the float to pass out the items. The Brownwood Art Associa-tion will be seeking entries for the second annual Christmas Photo Contest in conjunction with the 4th annual Christmas Under the Stars

Festival on December 7th and 8th. The photos will be on display at the

Lehnis Railroad Museum on Friday, De-cember 7th and Saturday, December 8th

from 4-8 p.m. during the Christmas Under the Stars Festival.

Cash prizes for first and second place will be awarded in categories of ages 15 & under, ages 15-

20, ages 21 & up, professional, and best "Scared of Santa" photo. A ribbon will be awarded for People’s Choice as attendees

choose their favorite photo during the contest. There is a $5 fee per entry, and photographs will be accepted at the Lehnis Railroad Mu-

seum on Saturday, December 1st from 1-3:30pm. All photos must be framed with wire or hook and be ready to hang.

Non-profit organizations are decorat-ing Christmas trees this year to help

raise money for their organization dur-ing the 4th annual

Christmas Under the Stars Festival.

Non-profits will be displaying fully decorated trees at

the Lehnis Rail-road Museum

from December 1st - 8th, and each tree

will be up for auction. Silent

auction bid sheets will be placed at each tree and

all proceeds will benefit

the non-prof-it agency who

decorated the tree. To help the

cause, the non-

profits have recruited local businesses to sponsor their tree to pay for setup and decorations.

One tree will be selected for the “Best Decorated” award to be given to the sponsoring non-profit and business. An award for the “Silent Auction Winner” will also be given.

This will be a great chance for the pub-lic to purchase a fully decorated Christ-mas tree for the holiday season while supporting a local non-profit agency.

The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce will host the “Treats for Santa Bake-off” competition at the 4th annual Christmas Under the Stars Festival.

Santa likes his treats, and area bakers can enter the contest to show off their skills in several categories including pies, cakes, bars/brownies, cookies, bread/rolls, and muffins.

The contest will take place on the second day of the festival, Saturday, December 8th in the Bertrand Tech-nology Solutions meeting room at the Brownwood Area Chamber of Com-merce offices. Baked goods will only be accepted on December 8th from 3-4pm and judging will begin at 4:30pm.

Scoring for each treat will be based on taste, appearance, and originality.

Cost is $10 per entry and cash prizes will be awarded for

1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Entry forms are available at the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce or online at

The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with the First United Methodist Church Weekday Pre-School for the 3rd Annual Santa’s Sleigh 5K.

The event will take place at Gordon Wood Stadium on Saturday, December 8th at 9 a.m., with all proceeds benefit-ing the FUMC Weekday Pre-school.

The pre-school is located inside the First United Methodist Church in Brownwood, but operates on its own budget separate from the church as a non-profit organization. The funds raised from the Santa’s Sleigh 5K will help provide supplies and other educa-tional material for the pre-school over the next year.

Registration is $25 per runner and forms are available now at the Brown-wood Area Chamber of Commerce of-fice, most area fitness centers, and the FUMC Weekday Pre-School.

Packet and t-shirt pickup and last-chance registration will take place during the Christmas Under the Stars Festival on Friday, December 7th inside the Depot (600 E. Depot St.) between 5-7pm. T-shirts will be available to the

first 50 to register for the race so early registration is encouraged.

Medals will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each age group as well as overall male and female winners. The awards ceremony will be held immediately after the race at the finish line.

All runners are encouraged to dress in Christmas costumes.

First Saturday of Every Month is Family Day Lehnis Railroad Museum


The Brownwood Rotary Club Arts & Crafts Show will be held on Saturday, Nov 10 inside the Brownwood Coliseum in downtown Brownwood. The show’s offerings are so diverse that many types of hand-crafted items will be available. Fea-tured artisans consist of iron and metal art, hand-crafted clothing, jewelry, home ac-cessories and much more. Fine artists will include paintings, jewelry and pen & ink drawings. Several craft-

ers will offer selections of home-made candles, soaps, lotions and food items.

Local favorite Stella Tin-kler has developed several beautiful new techniques for her decorative gourds that she is anxious to show her fans. According to Tinkler, “Some are embellished with pine needle coiling while others have fret-work carving and gold leaf. I hope everyone likes them.” Another returning favorite is the Goats’ Milk Soap Man,

Arvel Boatner who sells goats’ milk soaps, lotions and other unique skin care products. Boatner stated, “I’ve been in the Brownwood show for about 7 or 8 years.” He continued, “I do shows almost every weekend of the year and I do this one because I love the town and the folks who put on this show are so great to work with.”

The Brownwood Rotary Club has announced that the show proceeds will benefit

their Dictionary Project—in which every third-grade student in Brown County re-ceives their own Student Dic-tionary. Additional funds (if any) are distributed as schol-arships to local graduating high school students.

In Christmas 2011 – fami-lies gathered to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year. For the fami-lies of the 111th Engineer Battalion, Christmas wasn’t quite complete without their soldiers who were serving in Afghanistan at the time. This National Guard Unit, made up of soldiers from Brownwood, Stephenville, and the surrounding area, spent their Christmas in a foreign country under hostile

circumstances all in the name of freedom – our freedom.

All of our soldiers returned home safely in April of this year and resumed the lives they left behind. As Christ-mas 2012 quickly approach-es, these “Roughnecks” would like to celebrate this holiday season with their military family and loved ones. Plans for a Christmas celebration are under way for December 8th. Of course budgets are tight in any

government department, especially the military, and “parties” are not necessarily a line item! This means they must depend on the commu-nity to assist them in any way possible.

Monetary donations are being accepted in order to provide a meal for the families (approximately 200 individuals). Other donations being accepted are items that can be used for door prizes and items for the raffle to

be held during the celebra-tion. If you or your busi-ness/organization is able to assist, please contact Missi or Sunni at the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce, 325-646-9535. Checks can be made payable to FSC 111th EN BN FRG and mailed to P.O. Box 880 Brownwood, Texas 76804 or you may drop off donations at the Chamber office 600 East Depot Street Brownwood, Texas.
