EmoSonal Intelligence (EQ)
• Defined: The ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emoAons and to use this informaAon to guide one’s thinking and acAons in posiAve ways.

• Self-‐Awareness -‐ understand their own thoughts, behavior, emoAons, strengths, and weaknesses.
• Self-‐RegulaSon -‐ Taking Ame to think before talking • Self-‐MoSvaSon -‐ possess iniAaAve and have long-‐term goals;
producAve, enjoy a challenge, not necessarily focused on external moAvators (i.e. status or wealth)
• Social Awareness -‐ Caring for others, ability pick up emoAonal cues from others, idenAfy and understand viewpoints of others, and feel comfortable in social situaAons
• Social Skills -‐ FuncAon well as team players, communicate clearly, manage conflict, build consensus, and encourage others to develop and achieve.

• Managing RelaSonships – Understanding how others feel can help people communicate and express feelings
• Maintaining Physical Health – Underdeveloped EQ can lead to stress and physical health condiAons
• PromoSng Mental Health – Underdeveloped EQ can lead to depression, anxiety, isolaAon, or feelings of loneliness due to lack of healthy relaAonships
• Succeeding in the Community – EQ needed to successfully manage the social expectaAons of everyday life, including school, life, or leading in the recovery community

Tips for EmoSonal Intelligence (EQ)
• Recognize your emoAons and how they impact the way you communicate
• Pay aeenAon to non-‐verbal cues (e.g., facial expressions, gestures, voice tone, and body language. Think about what non-‐verbal cues you are sending and receiving)
• Go beyond listening, make eye contact, and concentrate on what is being said, not on what your response will be
• Focus on the other person, be present in the conversaAon, and think before speaking
