BCEF Helps BHS Garden Grow

In their first three grant cycles, BCEF has provided over $120,000 to support projects across Brunswick’s public schools. With the broad-based support of you and the Brunswick community, we can reach our goal and continue to fund even more great ideas. Visit http://brunswickcef.org/donate/ to donate today or contact them for information on how to get involved at [email protected] - help make a difference

today! Brunswick High School’s organic farm program, in its fifth year, expanded and offered paid

internships to participating students, thanks to a grant from BCEF. Twenty-one students from across the BHS student body, including a core group of 8-12 students, worked throughout the summer to make the garden a success. In addition to the physically and intellectually demanding work of tending the farm, students benefited from a full summer of enriching activities including visits to other farms, berry picking, cooking and preserving food, learning sustainable farming techniques from professional farmers, and connecting with their community through visits to local charitable organizations to donate produce from the farm. This garden, organized and led by BHS English teacher Jon Riggleman, serves as a focus for many curriculum connections including art and health as pictured above.

"DINE IN" ON FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES DAY, DECEMBER 3, 2017!

Join Mrs. Selberg’s Food Science Classes and “Dine In”! Students will prepare a home cooked meal

and have a family mealtime!

We ask families to make and eat a healthy dinner together on December 3rd.

There’s a nationwide obesity epidemic, especially in children and teens, and a lot of that has to do with

unhealthy eating and lack of food preparation knowledge.

Research has shown that the whole family benefits from family mealtime by having better nutrition,

improving family communication, fostering family traditions, and teaching life skills, such as meal planning, budgeting, and food preparation. Encouraging families to prepare simple, healthy meals and eat together supports the essence of family and consumer sciences: “Creating Healthy and Sustainable Families.”

NAVIANCE FAMILY CONNECTION

The Brunswick High School Counseling Office is pleased to continue offering a web based college and career planning resource called Naviance Family Connection. Naviance provides a range of services for students and parents. Naviance Family Connection will allow students and parents to:

Get Involved in the Planning and Advising Process – Order transcripts; Build a résumé,

complete on-line surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and careers

Research Careers – Naviance Family Connection offers the “Career Interest Profiler” as an on-

line career interest assessment for students based on Holland’s interest codes. The “Do What You Are” feature begins with a personality inventory and concludes with a report describing the student’s personality type, potential careers, and related majors. The results link students directly to detailed career profiles, which include educational requirements, salary data, and in some cases even multimedia presentations. Students may also link directly to the college database to find colleges that offer an educational path to each career

Take a Learning Style Inventory – The innovative Learning Style Inventory gives important

insights about how students learn in order to help each student achieve maximum potential. The tool assesses the following dimensions that affect a students’ learning: Immediate environment; Emotionality; Sociological needs; and Physical needs

Research Colleges – Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to actual

historical data from our school for students who have applied and been admitted in the past

Sign Up for College Visits – Find out which colleges are visiting our school and sign up to attend

those sessions

Apply for Scholarships – Check lists of scholarships that are on the local, state and national

level.

Students each have a code to access his or her personal password protected account on the Family Connection website where they can keep records of their activities, grades, and college and/or career interests. They are able to compare GPA, SAT & ACT scores, along with other information. Naviance Family Connection also facilitates communication between counselors and students. Additionally, the Brunswick High School Counseling Office uses Naviance to submit transcripts and recommendations to most colleges online. To begin using Family Connection, go to the Brunswick High School Home Page, click on the Naviance link and follow these steps:

UNION SCHOOL NEWS

At our Off Campus Learning Center on Federal Street, we continue to progress through the curriculums in the respective courses we are engaged in. In US History, students have recently learned about the colonial frontier, Native American struggles and conflicts, and westward expansion. In World History, students have made connections to how innovations have played a role in shaping history. In Earth Science, students are learning about ground water such as wells and aquifers and effects of fracking. In Biology, students are currently studying the positive and negative aspects of bacteria and viruses. Some highlights for our PE and Experiential activities recently have been a bowling outing at Yankee Lanes, a 3-4 mile walk along the Androscoggin River bike path, and a community service day at the Preble Street Soup Kitchen in Portland. It’s hard to believe that we will begin new courses next month! English and Math classes will be the

focus for the second semester.

If you’re interested in having a unique and more personalized approach to education, get in touch

with us (319-1925) to visit our location and meet with us – we have openings for the 2nd semester!

Attention BHS Students!

Community Service Message

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead

Each student enrolled at BHS must meet a 30-hour community service requirement in order to gradu-ate (policy), a website has been created for students to discover community service opportunities that exist in our area. The real emphasis of our record keeping is to track and enforce the 30-hour graduation re-quirement among all students. We try our best to manage and track hours beyond the required thirty, but it is the student’s responsibility to keep their own portfolio of service activity. Students should make copies of their hours and keep their own portfolio while submitting originals to the main office at Brunswick High.

Student Responsibility

It is the student’s responsibility to fill the community service form out correctly and timely. Community ser-vice documentation is not the community partner’s responsibility. Community service documentation is not Brunswick High School’s responsibility. Students should not assume that their community partner has filled out the form and sent it to BHS.

Inaccuracies

Any inaccuracies on report card postings are to be reported immediately to Mr. Wilson. In rare instances, community service hour totals posted on report cards may change as a result of discovering mistakes.

Posting Hours Community service hours are updated eight times a school year, at progress report time and at the end of each quarter. The BHS Guidance Office updates transcripts at the end of each semester so be sure to get your summer and fall hours in early. Any student wishing to have his or her community service rec-ord articulated on school letterhead may request this from Mr. Wilson.
