CROW’S NEST Vol. XV, No. 13 www.guilfordcollegeumc.org September 16, 2015

Tom’s Note…. If you think Genesis is just a band from the „80‟s….

If you think it was Dr. Doolittle who took two of every animal into an Ark…

If you think an epistle is a woman who is married to an apostle…

… You may need to know more of The Story.

The Bible can be a bit intimidating at times. There are strange names of people and places. It contains accounts of events we were

never taught in school. It seems at first to be made up of a lot of different, seemingly unrelated stories. But it really is one, big,

exciting story.

In Genesis 1:1 we read: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” At the end of the Book of Revelation 21:1 we

read: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first had passed away.” This brings up the biggest question – “What in the

world happened between the beginning and the end of the Bible?” Uncovering the powerful and seamless story is what we began last

week. Uncovering The Story is what will provide all of us with the meaning, purpose, and destiny of our existence. Uncovering The

Story shows us that God is seeking to guide us every day as we choose to align lives with His great plan. Uncovering The Story will

forever transform your life and your family’s life.

Think The Story doesn’t include you? This week you are going to read about a couple God used to transform the world. We might

wonder why in the world God would choose a 90 year old woman named Sarah and her 100 year old husband named Abraham to give

birth to a new generation? Is it obvious that God picks people you and I would not necessarily select to take part in His story? That

means God also has a part for you and me. Unlike the way we do business, God taps people, not merely because of their abilities, but

for their availability. God searches for people who are open to be used by Him. That’s good news for folks like us who may not have

the greatest pedigree – but have a real desire to make a difference for God.

I hope you will join us in this journey through The Story – because the greatest thrill of life comes when we realize how our stories

and God’s Story intersect. At that intersection the lights of abundant life flash and we finally realize why we were created and how to

live the best possible life. You’ve wanted to do this all your life. Now is the time to put that desire into action! If you are not a part of

a small group there’s still time to join one on Sunday morning or Wednesday night. Be sure to also check our Website for updates on

all the materials, the daily devotions, video lessons and sermons that are provided for this entire journey.

Your Story matters to God – and to us! May God’s Spirit bless & lead you in this exciting time!

NOTE FROM MATT….

Whereas in years previous, we’ve had one chef leading Wednesday Night Out, this fall we have four faithful servant leaders who are each taking turns. We give our thanks to Alyssa Rice, Dwaine Davis, Bob Beasley and Shannon Martin for answering this call of God and need of the church. While in some ways sharing in this leadership presents more logistical details to be ironed out, it provides opportunities for fresh blessings as well. For her first meal, on September 30, Shannon has invited the Rastmo and Abdullah family to help prepare some side dishes that we might sample. This family was Syrian refugees who were resettled to Greensboro through the work of Church World Service. They now rent our Ballenger house. Shannon writes about how she’s been inspired by the Rastmos’ gracious welcome, and why she wanted the church to have this opportunity to connect with them on a deeper level. “As you read stories in the Old Testament, you see that the idea of hospitality was a core value of the Israelites. That value rings true throughout the Middle East still to this day, as families are glad to welcome in a stranger for a meal or a night’s stay on a journey. Recently, I went to visit our church’s Syrian Refugee family. Although I only intended to pop in for a moment to discuss the upcoming WNO meal they are helping prepare, the whole family welcomed me into their home and insisted on feeding me. The house became a flutter of hospitality, they pulled up a special chair for me at the table, they set out a plate and some food. I was overwhelmed by their insistence on caring for me. The sisters said, “We always have an extra place at our table, just in case someone comes.” What a powerful example of hospitality that we can all learn from. Join us in a few weeks to sample some traditional Syrian dishes as a part of our WNO meal.” The spirit of hospitality found in the Old Testament, as well as among our Syrian neighbors, is also echoed in the New Testament. Hebrews 13:2 says, “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” May we all – in this day and age when so many are pushed to their limits by hunger, persecution and war – find a little more room in our hearts and at our tables for those who need our welcome. God’s peace, Matt

GUILFORD COLLEGE UMC BACKPACK CLUB

When your child or grandchild comes home from school, what is the first thing he or she does? For many children, it's a trip straight to the fridge for a snack. Unfortunately, for many children right here in Greensboro, this is simply not a choice. The free or reduced lunch received at school on Friday

is the last nutritious food many children will have until Monday. The Backpack Club is beginning its fifth year thanks to your generous support. GCUMC sponsored 20 children last year. We additionally provided Thanksgiving meals, Christmas gifts, summer food, and back to school supplies and resources for clothing. The Backpack Club helps children who have been identified as being at risk of going hungry over the weekend. Each week, volunteers fill backpacks with nutritious, kid-friendly food that the child can take home on Friday and bring back to be filled again the next week. This ministry sponsors students from Guilford Elementary School. Almost 75% of the students (over 400 children) at Guilford Elementary School are dependent on the subsidized school lunch program. HOW TO GET INVOLVED:

Be a Club Buddy - Support a child with monetary contributions of $8 per week ($320 for a school year). This money will be used to purchase food items in bulk. Individuals, families, small groups, and Church School classes are encouraged to consider sponsoring a child. You are also encouraged to send notes to your child and build a relationship with the family.

Be a Club Shopper - Purchase food from our menus in bulk (Sam's, Costco, Walmart, Aldi) using monetary contributions received.

Be a Club Packer - Sort and stuff backpacks at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at GCUMC.

Be a Club Transporter - Deliver filled backpacks Thursday mornings to Guilford Elementary School.

Be a Club Pray-er - Pray for the children each week as they receive their backpacks.

Please contact Donna Ford at (336) 292-5833 or [email protected] for more information or to sign up to help with this vital ministry!
