PWP Member Appreciation Retreat

I want to thank every member who painted “treasure boxes” dur-ing this year. I realize that every one is busy and I do appreciate all the “work” that every one puts into decorating the boxes. We have sent 23 boxes to “Caitlin Smiles”. Also thank you To Barb Lehm-an for delivering the boxes to “Caitlin Smiles”. I will have boxes with me at the Jan. meeting; and also patterns for ideas. Keeping in Touch EverydayThis newsletter is a nice thing to have to refer to with the information stashed alongside your paints, or in a notebook that you keep things just for Penns Woods Painters. Did you know that you can have a bit more fun staying in touch with all your fellow painters with just a click of your mouse, or button on your lap-top or smart phone? First there is our new website, which is way more interactive than our previous one. More chances are available for updating it more often and for inter-action between all of the members. Go to http://pennswoodspainters.wordpress.com/ and check it out. Second there is Facebook. I know, I know...you are not looking for another time waster on-line. How-ever, what if you think about it as our ultimate show and tell? Where else can you ask a question of the

membership and get almost instant feedback?“Has anyone tried this paint?” “Does that work as well as.....?”

“Where can you buy....?”“Did you know that ....... is having a show?

There is nothing like experiences that we all have had to make it just that much easier for one another. If as many of as possible head over to our Facebook page....like it and start communicating with one another I guarantee we’ll have some fun. So far we have shared some great photos from meetings and events that you might have missed in 2013. The more that partcipate

and share the more connected we will be. If you know members who aren’t on the computer and don’t have access to this, invite them over or meet for coffee with your lap-top some-where there is Wi-Fi and have some fun.

Tera Leigh started the memory Box Program in 1998. Boxes are painted and donated to hospitals with infant bereavement programs. The boxes are given to parents who have lost a child at birth or shortly thereafter to hold the few personal belongings of their child. Painters all over the U.S., Canada, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Australia and Venezuela now paint boxes to donate. As one of our community service projects, Penns Woods Painters have adopted the Carlisle, Holy Spirit, Pinnacle Health Harrisburg Hospitals as well as the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center hospital for our Memory Box pro-gram. We have traditionally held a Paint-In, generally in February each year, dedicated to painting Memory Boxes’ we also encourage members to paint Memory Boxes throughout the year. Speaking from the heart, since my family has been affected by this unimaginably sad situation, please look inside your hearts to see if you can help us by painting some Mem-ory Boxes this year. The Memory Box website is www.memoryboxes.org. On the website, there are a number of appropriate saying that may be included, as well as some designs that have been contributed to this wonderful endeavor.

For our February 2014 Memory Box Paint-In program, we will continue the pattern of the last few years, with one project taught in the morning, and a second project taught in the afternoon. The 2014 date is Saturday, February 15 – mark your calendars now, and let me, know that you plan to be there! (Hilary Felinski ([email protected], 717 730 9220)) I will have the patterns and prep instruc-tions with me at the January 2014 meeting so you will have at least a month to pre-pare for this year’s event. Arlene Linton and Scottie Foster have graciously allowed us to base our 2014 Memory Box program on their designs. We will be painting one of Arlene’s lacy designs, and one of Scottie’s Doves. For both of the designs, you can prep your lids with a medium to dark base coat. You may want to sponge the bottom of the boxes, or use Arlene’s ‘linen’ technique! You will want to have your normal painting supplies with you for the February Paint-In.

For Scottie’s Dove, you will want to have some good stroke brushes. For Arlene’s design, she rec-ommends that we that we use the Scharff Series 3000 Kolinsky Sable Round (#4) (I used #2 for this design), and the Scharff Series 560 - Golden Taklon Short Handle Jumbo Wash (2 inches). You can

find these brushes at http://artbrush.com/shop/home.php. Please join us on February 15 to con-tinue the strong tra-dition that PWP has established for this program! You can sign up at our Janu-ary 2014 meeting, or by emailing Hilary (address above) or calling her (phone number also above).

Included here are some design variations that are examples of what we will be painting on Feb. 15!

Well, your Ways and Means com-mittee needs to report on a couple of activities, as well as remind you about the same! First – if you are planning to join us for the February 15 Memory Box Paint-In, and you do not have the Scharff brushes that Arlene Linton recommends, please be re-minded that, while we have already had some success with our 2013 Scharff brush orders, we still need a minimum order of $300 retail to benefit from the chapter fundraiser order. If you want to order any Scharff brushes through the chap-ter, at a 30% discount off the retail price, please contact Hilary Felin-ski. Remember, for this fundraiser, the chapter gets a 40% discount, and you get the 30% discount, with that 10% difference helping the chapter’s treasury. Next – The Rada fundraiser, while allowing us to receive up to 40% on each sale, was largely not used by our chapter members. To date, we have received $91.00 to-wards our fundraising goals (as of mid-November), with another $100 anticipated based on November and December sales. Statements are received approximately mid-month, so we do not yet have the fi-nal numbers for 2013, based on the 2014 January newsletter deadlines. We will report our 2013 final num-bers in the February Board meeting minutes or at the March meeting. For 2014, we will be having both a Silent Auction and a Raffle of some big brush items. (See page 2)These will be held at our SATUR-DAY meetings in January, May and September….so you might want to make sure you are there! For the January 2014 meeting, the SILENT AUCTION item is a

chair, painted by Ginger Edwards. We will also have 2 RAFFLE pieces that will be awarded at the 2014 January meeting – a plate by Judy Diephouse from our 2012 seminar, and the White Poppy, painted by Maureen McNaughton at our 2013 seminar. Raffle tickets will be $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. Pictures are in-cluded in this newsletter – to whet your whistles and entice you to join us on January 18! And last – we are working with the folks at Messiah Village to see for what months we might be able to display our art in the Village Center. As a reminder, we deduct both a 10% donation to Messiah, and the state sales tax from the sale price before we issue a check to

you, the artist. And, as a second reminder, there may be more than one payments issued, depending on when the money is actually received.
