Spread over 300 acres in the green hills of suburban Smith-field, Rhode Island, Bryant College appears a marvel of modern architecture. Designed with maximum flexibility, the campus buildings were planned to accommodate the changing and constantly updated education programs and social attitudes of our time. The setting, campus and ultra-modern facilities all contribute to an individualistic approach to education.

For well over a century, Bryant College has pioneered in specialized education that provides an essential resource for business and industry — creative, knowledgeable, and highly skilled men and women.

Bryant was founded in 1863 as a privately-owned commercial college in Providence, Rhode Island. Its motto, then as now, was "Education for Business Leadership". But the definition of "business leadership" has been in constant transformation since that motto was conceived, and Bryant's educational mission has expanded accordingly.

By combining business courses with general studies courses in the humanities, the social sciences, and the arts, Bryant gives its students the foundation for a lifetime of achievement and continued learning.

Page 5: BRYANT COLLEGE SPORTS DIGEST

Nationally recognized four-year undergraduate programs lead to the degrees of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Business Teacher Education, Bachelor of Science in Office Administration, and Bachelor of Science in Law Enforcement. These four-year programs may be completed in three or three-and-a-half years by attending special sessons. A two-year program in secretarial and office educations leads to the degree of Associate in Science in Secretarial Studies.

On October 24, 1967, Earl S. Tupper, former president of Tupperware Company, made an outright gift of his 222-acre estate to the College. This gave Bryant the unique opportunity of building a new campus from the ground up.

The move to Smithfield in 1971 converted Bryant from an urban to a suburban college. The campus location offers individual students the best of two worlds - the serenity of a suburban campus, all within 15 minutes of Rhode Island's capital city, Providence.

A network of modern superhighways link the campus to the major turnpikes of New England. The campus is only 12 miles from Providence and 40 miles from Boston.

Athletic facilities are an integral part of the Bryant campus. Last spring the new multi-purpose activities center opened its doors to the Bryant community. The addition of the MAC gave Bryant one of the most complete and modern collegiate athletic facilities in the East.

If coach Mike McGuinn can find pitching to match the offensive displayed last season, the Indians will be one of the top college-division teams in New England this spring.

Led by Paul Perry, the number two hitter in the New England Division Two ranks, the Indians set seven school offensive records last season.

Included among those record-setting efforts was Perry's .430 average and a .312 team batting average.

Perry, a senior outfielder from Riverside, Connecticut, will be leading the attack once again this year. But coach Mike McGuinn also will have the services of three other players who hit over 300 last year - Gene Rosadino, Joe Scanlon and Paul Man-gano. Scanlon, a senior infielder from East Hartford, will serve as co-captain with Perry.

Mike Walsh, a junior righthander from Westwood, Mass., will be the top returning pitcher. But McGuinn will be looking for help from several newcomers as the Indians' mound staff attempts to lower the 4.77 ERA it posted last year.

In three years as head coach Mike has returned respectability to the Bryant baseball program.

In 1978, the Indians set a New England record for most losses, 25, and most consecutive losses, 22.

Mike took over the team the following year and started a rebuilding program. Last year the Indians were one of the top hitting teams in the New England Division Two ranks.

Mike, who also serves as the Indians' assistant athletic director and assistant basketball coach, is a graduate of Providence College where he was a member of the Friars' nationally ranked basketball team in 1974.

One of the most successful teams in the Bryant varsity sports program, the Indian Keglers are constant national tournament qualifiers.

Members of the Tri-State College Bowling Conference, the Indians finished second in the 4-team league last year.

In addition to their league accomplishments the Indians also captured the Tri-State Doubles Tournament title, finished second in the Association of College Unions International Rolloff and fifth in a 51-team AMF Intercollegiate tournament.

Four of the top members from last year's squad - Steve Guz-ski, Mike Fabian, Lisa Monroe and Ty Rheaume — will be back again this year. The quartet each averaged over 180 during last year's Tri-State season with Guzski at 187, Fabian 185, Monroe 183 and Rheaume 181.

Miss Monroe, one of the top female collegiate bowlers in the East, has been one of the 24 qualifiers for the national women's collegiate tournament in each of her first two seasons of collegia-ate competition.

Ken McKenzie is one of the most successful bowlers in Bryant College history.

As an undergraduate, Ken qualified for national NAIA and ACU tournaments for four consecutive years during the early 70s.

Ken returned to his alma in 1979 as an academic counselor and immediately took over as head bowling coach.

In the past three years, under Ken's direction, the Indians have been one of the top collegiate bowling teams in the country.

The loss of All-American Ernie DeWitt leaves a large void in the Indians' offensive picture. DeWitt had been the Indians top scorer for the past four years leading the tribe to a combined record of 76-33 during his collegiate career.

Without DeWitt in the lineup, the Indians will be looking for a more balanced attack in 81-82. The key to that attack will be Paul Berlo. The 6-6 junior is one of the best shooting forwards in the eastern collegiate ranks. He averaged 13 ppg as a freshman and 16 last year.

Berlo is one of only three players with more than a full year of varsity experience. The other veterans are Dennis Verni, a 6-8 junior center and Ray "Chip" Venter, a 5-11 junior guard.

Lee Schatzlein, a 6-4 sophomore also should play a key role in the Indians' drive for an NCAA tournament berth. Schatzlein averaged 10 points a game during the second half of last season after recovering from an early season leg injury.

In his three years as the Indians' head basketball coach, y/ dm Lee Drury has become one of «^ • the most successful college-division coaches in New England. His .675 win-loss percentage (56-27) makes him the winningest active Division Two coach in New England.

In 1980, he was named Rhode Island Coach of the Year by Words Unlimited, the Association of Rhode Island sportswriters and sportscasters.

Lee came to Bryant in 1972 after serving two years as the Brown University freshman basketball coach. Heserved as assistant coach and assistant athletic director for six years at Bryant before taking over as AD and head coach in 1978.

A 1966 Springfield College graduate, he was captain of the 65-66 Springfield basketball team, which recorded the best record in Springfield history, 20-4.

He appeared in the 1966 New England Hall of Fame All-Star game and was a member of the 1965 Springfield team that conducted a 62-day Around-the-World good will tour on behalf of the U. S. State Dept.

Coach Mike McKee's squad is hoping to pick up where it left off last season.

After dropping eight of their first 12 games, the women hoop-sters posted a respectable 6-5 record over the final month of the season.

A big reason for the late season charge was a healthy Sue Cristafi. The sophomore guard from East Haven, Conn, missed the first half of the season with a leg injury and wasn't back to full strength until late January.

Once Sue was at full strength the Indians' attack started to jell. She averaged 15 points per game from her backcourt spot in addition to setting up the two top frontcourt performers Tricia Farrand and Kelly Conran. Combined the trio averaged 33 points per game, Farrand 10 and Conran 8. The threesome, along with two other starters Joan Waters and Denise Armstrong, will be back in the lineup again this year.

An extra incentive will be added to the 81-82 campaign with the initial season of Northeast-7 Conference competition.

Mike will be starting his third year as the women's head basketball coach.

A graduate of St. Francis College in Biddeford, Maine, he was a star performer for the Red Knights basketball forces in 1972.

Since taking over as the Indians head coach he has steadily upgraded the program. Top performers such as Sue Castafi, Tricia Ferrand and Kelly Conran all were recruited by McKee.

In addition to coaching the Bryant women, Mike also is the head coach of the Mt. St. Charles Academy boys' team in the R. I. Interscholastic League.

Rebuilding is the word for the 1981 Bryant harriers. With the loss through graduation, of five of last year's top seven runners, coach Fred Reinhardt isn't predicting any championships for this year's squad.

The hopes for a successful season appear to rest with two veterans, Jim Forker and Scott Pierson, both juniors.

Reinhardt also is hoping Art Welch, a schoolboy standout at Lincoln, R.I., High, who has been sidelined with injuries for the past two years will be back in action this fall.

Two freshmen with strong high school credentials, Joe Han-ley of North Attleboro, Mass. and Marty Merritt of West Hartford, Conn, also should help.

Fred is the founder of the Bryant cross country and track programs. Except for a two-year absence in the mid 70's, he has directed the Indian trackmen since 1965.

During Fred's tenure the Indians have become one of the top college-division cross country and track teams in New England. One of the leading track officials in New England, Fred also has served as president of the R.I. Timers Guild. In addition to his coaching duties, he is a professor of mathematics at Brvant.

Led by senior co-captains Jenny Proud and Janet Cook, the women harriers are looking forward to their second straight successful season.

Last year, in its first year of varsity competition, coach Charlie Mandeville's squad posted a 6-5 record in dual meet competition, placed second in the Tri-State Conference championship and captured the women's title in the Bryant International Invitational.

Mandeville has virtually his entire 1980 team back for the 1981 campaign.

In addition to Proud and Cook, veterans Sue Jensen, Beth Perreault, Cathy Kears, Joanne Wright and Anne Quill should provide the depth needed for another winning season.

Bryant athletic director Leon Drury didn't have to look very far last year when it came time to find a coach for Bryant's newest women's athletic team.

In the past few years, Charlie Mandeville, the Indians' full-time athletic trainer, has become an expert in running techniques and treatment of running injuries.

A former All-State hockey player at Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket, R.I., Charlie has become an avid runner in the past few years, and spends most of his free weekends participating in New England area road races.

Before coming to Bryant four years ago, Charlie served as trainer for the Sun Coast Suns and Cape Cod Codders professional hockey teams.

Last year in the first year of varsity competition, he directed both the women's cross country and track teams to victorious seasons.

All NE-7 Conference selections Andy Hardy, Fred Messier and Greg Beamon head the list of 12 lettermen who will form the nucleus of the 1981 squad.

This trio, along with senior co-captain Tom Clynes, junior Jeff Besse and sophomore Tim Lawlor should give the Indians' booters the experience they lacked last season when they lost eight of fourteen matches.

Hardy, a junior from Lima, Peru, was the top scorer last year with seven goals and five assists. Messier, the other co-captain, was one of the top fullbacks in the NE-7 and Beamon, a sophomore from Lexington, MA developed into an outstanding midfielder in his first year of collegiate competition.

The addition of several talented newcomers should help strengthen some of last year's weak spots. Included among the newcomers are Greg Nash, a sophomore transfer who sat out last season and five top freshmen candidates: Rob Losty, Windsor Locks, CT, Joe DiPuma, Pleasantville, NY; Rick Sheppeck, Philadelphia, PA; Brian Wise, Framingham, MA, and Roland Locke, Bridgewater, MA.

This season marks step-two in Lou Verrochi's rebuilding program for the Bryant College Soccer team.

Lou took over last season as the Indians' fifth varsity soccer coach and immediately began laying the groundwork for a successful Division-II program.

A native of Walpole, Mass., Lou was head soccer coach at Tri-County Regional High in Franklin, Mass. for two years before taking over as the Indians' head coach last year.

During his two year tenure at Tri-County, Verrochi posted a combined 23-6-1 record, highlighted by a berth in the state tournament in 1979. In addition to his soccer coaching duties, Lou also serves as head wrestling coach at Franklin High.

A 1974 graduate of Boston State College, Lou won varsity letters in Soccer, Wrestling and Lacrosse for the Warriors. He was captain of the Warriors' Soccer team in both 1972 and '73.

If experience is the key to success, 1981 could be a banner year for the women's soccer team.

Only two players graduated from last year's 21-women roster, giving the Indians the expereince they lacked in 1980.

After a slow start in their first year of varsity competition last season, the women booters lost only one of their final five matches en route to a 2-3-2 record.

If they can find some talented freshmen to complement the long list of veterans this could be the first winning women's soccer season in Bryant history.

The New England Intercollegiate individual champion, three other starters from a team that qualified for the 1980 national NCAA Division Two Tournament and some top freshmen prospects.

What all that adds up to is another highly successul season for coach Archie Boulet's linkmen.

With Jim Hallet, the New England Intercollegiate champ, leading the attack the Indians should be a top contender for the New England team title.

Hallet, a junior from South Yarmouth, Mass., became one of the leading eastern amateur golfers this summer as he captured medalist honors in the Massachusetts Amateur and low amateur prize in the Rhode Island Open in addition to his collegiate championship.

But Hallet isn't the only reason the Indians should be in the New England title race this season. Joining Hallet once again will be senior Tony Gerardi, junior Mark O'Brien and sophomore Bill Walthouse, all starters from last spring's top five.

Freshmen Steve Dion of North Attleboro, Mass., John Jep-sen of Newton, Mass. and Wally Cichon of Ellington, Conn, should provide added depth.

Under Boulet's direction the Indians have had either an individual or team qualify for the national NCAA tournament in eight of the past 10 years.

In 18 years at the helm of the Indian linkmen, Boulet has suffered only two losing seasons. In addition to his coaching duties, Boulet is chairman of the Bryant Science Department and owner of the Woonsocket Country Club in Bellingham, Massachusetts.

Losses in three of their final four regular season games last year cost the Indians a chance for their first winning softball season in five years of varsity competition. But coach Lorraine Hudak is hopeful the combination of experience gained in '81 and the return of several key players will produce a winning campaign in '82.

Heading the list of returning lettermen will be Lynne Wright, a sophomore pitcher from Manchester, Conn. Lynn posted a 2.27 ERA last year en route to a 6-6 record.

Also returning in '82 will be most of last season's top hitters, led by Nancy Berardi, a senior third baseman who hit .435. Other top hitters returning this spring include Wright, .354, Linda Ysewyn, .350; Melissa Jenikies, .340 and Terry Payton, .318.

Lorraine has been the women's athletic coordinator, head volleyball and head softball coach for the past five years.

She will take a one-year leave from her volleyball post this season, but will be back as softball mentor in the spring.

Under her direction the volleyball team has posted four winning seasons and the softball team has enjoyed steady improvement.

Lorraine joined the Bryant staff in 1977, following a four-year teaching and coaching career at Warren, R.I., High.

During her tenure at Warren, she coached the women's varsity teams in tennis, basketball and volleyball. She organized the school's varsity volleyball program in 1974 and within a year the team qualified for the state playoffs.

With five of the top six players returning from last year along with two outstanding newcomers, the Indian netmen should be one of the top college-division teams in New England.

Coach John Gillooly will have the top three singles players from the 1981 squad, John Kreider, Paul Capozzoli, and Jack Murphy back in the lineup. But the veteran trio should receive strong competition for the top spots from two talented newcomers, freshman Kevin Ledversis and junior Jay DiLorenzo.

Ledversis was the number two player in the Rhode Island intercollegiate ranks last year during his senior year at Cranston East High. DiLorenzo, also a star basketball player, was runner-up in the New Jersey junior college championships last year.

Also returning for the 81-82 campaign are sophomore Bill Kaufman and junior Rick Cannata. The duo posted the best loss records on last year's squad at the number five and six singles spots respectively.

John is the Dean of Rhode Island collegiate tennis coaches. Since 1969, he has directed the Bryant netmen, suffering only three losing seasons in his 11-year tenure. His teams have posted 61 victories against 45 losses for a .575 win-loss percentage.

In addition to his tennis coaching position, John also is the Indians' fulltime Director of Sports Information.

Five points made the difference between a winning and losing season last year for coach Pete Barlow's squad and the Indians' third year mentor is hoping the experience gained last year will turn 1981 into a winning campaign.

The Indians dropped seven of 10 matches last season enroute to their first losing campaign in three years. But two of those setbacks were by a point and another by only two.

With the entire team back again in 81 coach Barlow is hoping the year's experience will make the difference.

Senior co-captains Shelley Tahan and Anne Westdyk are expected to hold down the number one and two singles spots respectively once again.

The other singles players should be Anne Maria Savela, Cindy Borelli and Lisa Daly. Ellen Fay and Laurie McCurry, who posted a 6-4 record as the top doubles combination last year will team-up once again with Susan Rannenberg and Sandy Alemian expected to make up the number two doubles squad.

As in cross country, the Indian trackmen were hard hit by graduation last year.

Their strength for the '82 campaign appears to be in the middle distance and field events where two of last year's top performers Mike Cassano, 400, and Jim Crutchley, javelin are back again.

Sophomore Joe Brennan in the 800, junior Jim Forker in the 1,500 and a healthy Art Welch in the 3,000 also could contribute.

The women tracksters set nine school records last season and seven of the eight women responsible for the record-setting efforts will be back this spring.

Janet Cook, a senior who set two individual records and sparked a pair of record-setting relay performances, should be the top middle distance performer again.

Junior Sue Jensen, who set records in both the 1,000 and 3,000 last season, will lead the distance corps once again and Pam Fales, the senior who broke all hurdling marks last year, will be the main threat in both the hurdles and sprints.

The Indians also should be strong in the field events with four school recordholders expected back in uniform: Kathy Smith, high jump; Karen Zecher, javelin; Celeste Buckmore, shot and discus and Sue Spencer, triple jump.

Over the past five years the volleyball team has been the most successful team in the women's varsity sports program and the 1981 season looks like it should be another banner year.

Under the direction of Lorraine Hudak, on leave of absence this season, the team posted an impressive 16-11 record in 1980, highlighted by a third place finish in the Rhode Island collegiate tournament.

With nine lettermen back from last year, including most of the starters, 1981 should be another great season. Heading the list of returning vets is Denise Armstrong, a 5-9 junior from Cranston, R.I., Kathleen Ahern, a 6-2 sophomore from Barrington, R.I. and Katty Smith, a 5-11 junior from Middletown, Conn.

The inclusion of women's volleyball into the Northeast-7 Conference schedule this season, should make the 1981 campaign the most exciting in Bryant history.

A leading New England club team for several years, the men's volleyball team gained varsity status last year and immediately brought home the hardware as they captured the New England Division 11-111 championship.

With several of the key members from that championship squad returning this season the outlook for 1982 looks bright.

It was formed in June, christened in September and by May it was a role model.

Success may be an understatement of the Northeast-7 Conference's progress during its first year of operation in 1980-81.

Officially formulated in June of 1980 as the nation's newest NCAA Division Two athletic conference, it took the NE-7 less than a year to become the model upon which other conferences would be formed.

But the NE-7 seemed destined for success since its inception. The original membership lineup reads like a Who's Who of eastern Division Two athletic powers - Assumption, Amer-can International, Bentley, Bryant, Hartford, Stonehill and Springfield.

Last season in its first year of competition the Conference crowned three men's champions, Hartford in soccer, Stonehill in basketball and Springfield in baseball and in the process generated more interest than two of its founding fathers had expected.

"I'm elated at what happened after one year," said Stonehill AD Tom Folliard in an Associated Press regional feature about the Conference this summer.

"If we went back to our original meeting and imagined this would be the result after the first year of competition, I think we all would have said, 'Let's not get carried away. Things won't happen like that.' "

"We feel a lot of milestones were established in the first year," said Bryant's Leon Drury in the same story. "The on-campus enthusiasm was great, and not only in basketball."

The Conference, however, isn't sitting on its laurels. Four new sports will be added to Conference competition this season: women's basketball, men's and women's cross country and women's volleyball. And in 1982-83 the Conference will be expanded to eight teams with the addition of St. Anselm's College of Manchester, New Hampshire.
