View from Comanche Trail, in 1-31.%%:C Canyon National Park, Utah

Bryce Canyon National ParkRYCE CANYON, about ninety miles east of Cedar City, Utah, in thenational park of the same name, is probably the most astonishing blendof exquisite beauty and grotesque grandeur that the forces of erosion have

ever produced. Bryce is in reality a giant amphitheatre or basin, approximatelytwo miles wide, about three miles long and 1,000 feet deep. I ts rim is 8,000 feetabove sea level. The softer parts of the high plateau have been etched awayleaving an endless array of towers, spires, statues, minarets, fortresses, pagodas, castles and cathedrals standing in indescribably weird formation—a ruinedOriental city overspread by gorgeous color. A brilliant watermelon-pink pre-dominates, with alternate strata of deep yellows and white, together with manytones of red, orange, buff and purple. A t first view the eye is fairly staggeredby the imposing monuments, both singly and in groups, that adorn the sidesand bottom of the canyon. Moreover, the play of sunlight and shadow uponthe huge iridescent bowl of lace and filigree work in stone constantly changesthe colors, and sometimes seems to give animation to realistic images.

Near the rim of Bryce Canyon is an attractive rustic Union Pacific LodgeCenter, and in the pines near by are the cozy guest lodges, including some ofde luxe type. Excellent scenic motorways connect Bryce Canyon with CedarBreaks National Monument, another marvelously eroded and tinted basin, andwith Zion National Park, Kaibab National Forest and Grand Canyon NationalPark, al l reached by 6-day tours in comfortable Union Pacific motor-busesoperating regularly out of Cedar City, Utah, the gateway, during the season,June 1 to September 20. This gateway is reached daily by the fine fast service ofthe Union Pacific. Side trips en route Yellowstone or the Pacific Coast via UnionPacific may be made from Ogden, Salt Lake City or Lund, Utah.
