Our healthcare team are very excited and proud to be a part

of a project to construct a new, state-of-the-art, twelve bed epilepsy unit. The unit will transform the lives of twelve residents who are living with the most severe cases of epilepsy and multiple disabilities.

Since September 2011, the Meath Epilepsy Trust has been focused on raising £2.3m to build a new centre at its site in Westbrook Road, Godalming. Ann Spencer fundraising manager stated “It’s tough times, financially, as everyone knows, but with the support and generosity of not only trusts and businesses, but many local people keen to get involved, the fundraising target is now within reach. We are so pleased to see Brymor on site and the work on the building finally underway.”

The initial focus from Kevin was not only securing some new and exciting projects but to find talented staff that could deliver. The team has

therefore been expanding and most recently Fleur Giles has joined the team as assistant quantity surveyor.

As well as attracting talented staff to the division, there have been some great achievements including:

• Completion of Parrywood pre-school; yet another project for Hampshire County Council to be completed on time, snag free and to budget

• Fast track B28 office refurbishment delivered on time – £1.1m completed in 14 weeks

• 24 months with no reportable accident and 1.2m hours RIDDOR free.

Kevin commented “I’m excited to be leading the expansion of our special works division building on the past success of Brymor Contractors. Our goal is to build on the capabilities and expertise of the division to increase its ability to undertake projects up to £2m. Our aim is to bring larger value professionalism to smaller value projects.

“Our dedicated teams offer a practical, innovative and personal approach to contracts ensuring our clients’ expectations are at the forefront of everything we do. We aim to provide our customers with a positive experience they want to repeat with us on future projects which is why I believe our division is growing from strength to strength.”

Special works continues its expansion with work in education, retail, defence, commercial and leisure. For more details or further information please contact [email protected]

Since the appointment of Kevin

Sage as special works director

and the expansion of the special

works division, we are pleased to

say that it’s going from strength to

strength. We are delighted to share

some encouraging results and

achievements.

I was attracted to the industry and to the prospect of spending my days liaising with clients, learning and evaluating their needs and focusing my work around their objectives. The prospect of interesting projects and opportunities appeals to me greatly. I have always had a great interest in buildings and in finance.

I decided to focus on quantity surveying so enrolled in a BSc Hons in Quantity Surveying and Property Development at Portsmouth University. The degree focused on elements of the subject such as

construction technology, tender documentation and measurement, legal studies, cost planning, sustainable development and health and safety.

The University of Portsmouth and the School of Environmental Design and Management has been designated ‘partnership status’ by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Whilst studying I carried out practical work experience with surveying practices which I thoroughly enjoyed, and knew this

was the career path for me. After spending four months

in an assistant QS role I heard Brymor were looking to expand their commercial sector, I was interested in the opportunity having heard how they were growing as a business and after some research I very attracted to their family business morals and impressed by their current portfolio.

I also saw that Brymor’s clients were consistently impressed with their work, which again attracted me and I’m pleased to now be a part of the special works team.

A little insight into Fleur:

In 1919, an engineering genius obsessed by speed, W.O. Bentley

focused on his dream, creating a car bearing his name and that October the first Bentley engine came to life.

Embracing modern technology while ensuring W.O. Bentley’s ambitions were not lost, the brand has gone from strength to strength and is now one of the most sought after car brands in the world. With this in mind we are very excited to be working alongside Bentley to redevelop their showroom in Bramshaw, New Forest, Hampshire.

Our preconstruction team worked hard at tender stage to produce a price and programme for our client

with the overall ethos to create a one-team approach to delivering a fully remodelled facility; maintaining the existing functionality of Bentley’s showroom operations throughout the

project. For these reasons we were delighted to pick up

this contract for such a prestigious client.

The phased redevelopment works include:• Demolition of existing vehicle

workshops, associated office space, staff/ancillary areas to side and rear.

• Erection and fit out of new workshops to Bentley standards, to include new MOT bay to VOSA

approval. Erection and fit out of new staff rest room and WC areas.

• Strip out, structural alterations and new build elements to workshop/MOT bay to the front of the showroom to form new motor vehicle space.

• Erection of a new Bentley showroom extension, including structural alterations

• Fit out of extended showroom to meet Bentley CI Standards.

• External works including making good of existing retained storage shed, making up of levels to front, surface water drainage alterations.

We look forward to delivering a project that Bentley, Brymor and the rest of the design team can be proud of.

Projects in Progress

We were excited to have been awarded this £4.5m

project to work alongside Associated British Ports (ABP) to deliver the new Mayflower Terminal in Southampton.

The works comprise of:• The remodelling of internal layouts• The addition of an internal lift

and two storey extension of the terminal into the adjoining existing grain store building

• The external northern façade is to be partially replaced.

Existing mechanical and electrical systems will be renewed as part of the alterations, including

new toilet facilities, provision of a new VRF heating/cooling system and replacement of the existing foul drainage system. The new system is a bio-digester with a pumped system; the latter involving trenching within the port to connect with an existing sewer pipe run.

The construction works commenced in late October with an overall construction programme of 22 weeks. The programme is a critical aspect of the contract due to the terminal needing to be open for passengers early 2015.

Edward HoodTRAINEE ESTIMATOR

Since the last edition of ‘Work in Progress’ we have continued to invest in our staff. As well as actively recruiting, we are supporting young construction professionals, helping them to build successful careers in construction.

We thought it would be interesting to hear from them:

Brymor continue to recruit for the future

I like to keep busy and have variety in what I do so the idea of working on and off site really appealed to me. In terms of variety, I also like working with different clients on different projects, this way the job can never get boring!

I was excited of the prospect to work at Brymor and from my research I realised they were going from strength to strength and were one of the few, large independent construction companies in the South of England. I then went on to discover their core values and ‘excellent delivery’ strategy and I knew they were an organisation I would love to be involved with.

As an apprentice, Brymor is sponsoring me to attend college to study my NVQ BTEC Level 3, Construction and the Built Environment. The thought of studying while I work really appealed to me as Brymor allow me to do things that I would not be able to do if I didn’t take the apprenticeship route.

For example, attending meetings, getting out into the field to witness jobs happening first-hand and continuously learning in a business environment. Furthermore, I am working with experienced employees who take pride in their work and motivate me to succeed in the industry.

In ten years time I see myself doing something I enjoy, climbing the career ladder in the construction industry, in particular, quantity surveying. Furthermore, I see myself still working for Brymor, keeping up their good reputation and working in a great environment with a great group of people.

I think the industry is an interesting one to work in, full of exciting opportunities for both company and client.

I was first attracted to the construction industry because you can clearly see the accomplishments of your labour. With every turn you can see the “built environment”; it is an exciting, challenging and ever-changing environment. The thought of one day being able to point at a project that I helped in will give great satisfaction.

So what attracted me to Brymor? I bumped into one of the current employees at a university fair. I went away and researched the company and based on the research I found that Brymor was a well developed company within the industry, working within many sectors. When I visited the website and other resources, I discovered impressive information about projects that had been completed and was pleased to be able to join the team.

After starting as a trainee estimator, Brymor have been extremely supportive in my career development from the word

“GO”. Taking me on as a trainee, whilst still at university studying BSc Construction Management, has allowed me to work with experienced professionals to gain valuable industry knowledge whilst studying. The Brymor team is always willing to help me with any questions I have related to work or university.

My future; I would like to see myself in a responsible position where I become an asset of the company. The industry as a whole is adapting and changing constantly to meet more stringent legislation. I believe this is going to be more about change in the design and build process of construction and I’m excited to be evolving with the industry and creating a lifelong career.

I have been a part of the construction industry for 23 years where I began my career as a plasterer working on numerous projects throughout London and the South East.

After being selected for a position by CTI I was offered a place with Brymor. After some research I felt that Brymor would be the ideal company to move forward with

and begin my management career. Brymor have now sponsored me for further education and I have begun my Level 4 Diploma in Site Management at Lambeth College.

Through my current training programme with Brymor I hope to be building a future in management and envisage running my own projects to a very high specification in the future.

I started my career in boatbuilding and then progressed into bench joinery and shopfitting and finally thought I’d move onwards and upwards to a position in within a main contractor. Boatbuilding was a different background to most, but has given me a great opportunity to cover a lot of bases in the construction industry while still achieving academic qualifications, so I felt this was a natural progression.

I knew of Brymor from my time at Hadley, we worked together on Southsea Library, Portsmouth. I had

supplied various quotations and knew they were considered a professional reliable company in the industry, so was delighted to be offered a position within the company.

My previous company did not support employee further education or have training programmes in place so I was excited to be given the opportunity go back to college where I am currently studying HNC Construction & Built Environment.

I am pleased to say that the industry is on the up again and I’m excited to be part of it!

In addition to investing in apprenticeships and young staff we are also rolling out a management training programme. This will provide our

senior management with the skills to fully understand their role and responsibilities of being a manager within the company. The course will also explore and demonstrate the benefits in all working together as a united front.

There will be significant emphasis on the core values as a foundation for the five year business plan to grow

the business, and significantly increase the workforce. Our management behaviour will be crucial to the achievement of this plan.

This is an exciting time for Brymor and the training programmes we are rolling out will ensure we invest in our staff and our future.

Brymor Management Unite!

Trainee site manager takes to the front lineJoe Nash has recently joined our evolving team and is working, training

and studying to build his career in site management. If this wasn’t enough to fill his day he decided that he needed to take up a hobby, which would also encourage him to keep fit, so has now joined the Army Reserves as part of the Royal Engineers!

The Army Reserves has two clearly defined roles. Firstly, it provides highly trained soldiers who can work alongside the Regulars on missions in the UK and overseas. Secondly, it gives people who have specialist skills, like medics and engineers, a range of exciting opportunities to use them in new ways.

Joe explains “I just wanted something like a hobby at the weekends that was productive and was a good way to keep fit so I thought why not the Army Reserves! Brymor has been really supportive and I’m sure everything I learn will help me out on site!

“My enrolment involves a minimum of 27days a year, normally at least one weekend and one drill night a month. The basic training consists of two phases which will be over six weekends, for each phase. The basic training will include, rifle training, shooting ranges, assault courses, map reading, survival treks, marches and the list goes on! I am part of the 135 geographical squadron of the Royal Engineers and basically we are one of the first units on the ground of any mobilization.

“We will plan, map, grid and assess terrain ready for the infantry units to plan attacks so even more of my training will be on how to use the kit for mapping terrain, including those flyable drones! Very exciting!”

We would like to congratulate Joe on his new venture. We are sure his new skills will be useful on site!

A s the children aged 4-11 walked into the assembly it was a lovely and relaxed atmosphere as one of the pupils sang Michael Jackson’s ‘Love

never felt so good’, whilst another shouted ‘it’s the builders’, so they instantly knew who we were.

The assembly got off to a great start and we received a warm welcome and positive response from the children when asking them questions about the building, PPE (Personal protective Equipment), what the safety signs they had seen around site meant, how big the digger was and what foundations were.

Then came the exciting part when we chose two pupils to dress up in our PPE, which they particularly enjoyed. We explained to them this clothing was an essential part to keeping the builders safe when working on the construction site.

We feel this is an essential part to working within schools and live environments where vulnerable people are in close proximity to our works. This is good practice and promotes a positive image of not only Brymor but the industry and helps our project team engage with the local community – it was great to see the children getting so involved and excited about health and safety. They are currently completing a poster competition with the winners being awarded prizes, so hopefully this will continue to raise their awareness of the dangers of a construction site.

Brymor Fundraising Activities

Throughout the month of October many of our guys ditched the razor to grow a spectacular beard to help raise awareness and money for vital

research in prostate cancer. OctoBeardFest is a fundraising organisation involving solely volunteers

with very low fixed administration costs - no office and no paid staff. Therefore all the money raised will go directly into research that will make a huge difference, this year they are hoping to raise enough money for the new diagnostic test.

John Clayton, Estimator shows his support for Prostate Cancer Research.

Macmillan coffee morning

Managing Director, Mark Dyer, completed the Great South Run on Sunday 6th October in 01:28:28

and came 5,212th!His chosen charity was the Saints Foundation who

consolidates the successful football, sport and education programme with a fresh commitment to their charity work. With over 25,000 young people and adults taking part in activities and over 190,000 accumulative visits each year, the programme is successful in capturing the attention of the public and offering a wide range of opportunities which ultimately makes a positive difference to people’s lives.

To help Mark raise sponsorship for such a worthy charity we held a charity day, consisting of a red and white dress down, cake sales and putting competition.

We raised an amazing £130, so thank you to everyone who donated and helped make the day a success.

Great South Run!

On Thursday 25th September Brymor’s head office staff held the

‘World Biggest Coffee Morning’ charity event for Macmillan.

To help make the day a huge success and to raise as much money as possible we organised a green dress down day, cake sale and raffle.

All members of staff participated by wearing green clothing, some of the ladies showed off their ‘Mary Berry’ talents by baking some delicious cakes and employees grabbed at the chance of winning some great raffle prizes.

Cancer is the toughest fight some of us will ever face and Macmillan are there to support you! They will help with all the things that people affected by cancer want and need. It’s not only patients who live with cancer, Macmillan also help carers, families and communities.

As treatments improve, more and more people are living with cancer in their daily lives. The money we raised helped make sure no one has to face cancer alone, from the moment they’re diagnosed, through treatment and beyond.

After a successful and enjoyable charity day we raised an amazing £205. Thank you to everyone who donated to such a worthy cause!

Penguins set to create a splash in £1.5m expansion to

Bournemouth Oceanarium

Following five years of planning the seafront tourist attraction

is set to embark on the biggest project in its 16 year history, which will increase the size of the Oceanarium by a third.

The centrepiece will be a fantastic penguin beach, pool and underwater viewing area along with a special area for penguins and visitors to mingle during feeding time.

The two-storey extension, which will open in summer 2015, will feature a new penguin enclosure, a walk through aviary,

sea view terrace, educational exhibits, additional catering facilities and new staff areas.

It is the first time that the Oceanarium, which is owned by Spanish leisure park giant Parques Reunidos, will be home to penguins and other new species will be announced in the coming months.

James Eels, UK Director at the Oceanarium, The Bournemouth Aquarium, said: “We are delighted to officially announce our plans to build an amazing new facility for all to enjoy.

“We have been planning this

huge development, which will increase the size of the Oceanarium by a third, for five years and this is a fantastic opportunity to build on our success and offer visitors more than ever before.

“I am confident that the penguins will be an amazing addition and the penguin enclosure has been specially designed to ensure people can get up close and personal with the animals.

“Indoor and outdoor eating

spaces, a children’s play area and elevated views of some of the UK’s most stunning beaches are just a snapshot of what will be on offer.

“We have enjoyed a super summer season and this news rounds off the year perfectly.”

We look forward to seeing the new penguin enclosure take shape and many of our families visiting next summer!

Bournemouth is set to become home to a colony of penguins thanks to a £1.5 million investment. We have now started on site and are excited to be involved in this scheme for The Real Live Leisure Company.
