Caroline divorced Michael for “extreme cruelty” beginning January 1879. In 1900 she lived in Lynn, MA at 29 Savory Street with husband Henry King. She had 10 children, 7 living. held Saturday afternoon. Mr. Bryne was born in Truro, Mass. on Cape Cod, a descendant of the Leete family that had settled in New Haven in 1632. In his youth he followed the sea, but at the age of 21 he went to Boston and found work with a contractor. Four years later he went into business for himself. He specialized in heavy construction work, and was president of A. W. Bryne & Son, Inc., a son, Thomas L., being associated with him in business.

Worked for Government Mr. Bryne’s business interest took him to all parts of the country. He did contract work for the government at Fort Russell, in Cheyenne, Wyo., and also work for the city of Cheyenne. He left Cheyenne to take charge of a construction job in New Orleans, but in 1899 returned to Wyoming where he prospected for copper. Among his large contracts were those of the Metropolitan Sewer and Water System in Massachusetts, and the Passaic Valley System in New Jersey, both of which cost in the millions. He also handled numerous contracts in New York and other states, and for numerous state institutions in Connecticut. He was regarded as an authority on explosives, and his advice was frequently sought on blasting and the use of dynamite. Mr. Bryne came to Hartford in 1907 and immediately began to take an active interest in civic and political affairs. Long active in Republican circles in the Eighth Ward, he played a prominent part in the many battles which gave the district its name of “The Fighting Eighth.”

Common Council Member He served as a member of the Common Council of this ward, being elected in 1924 and serving a term of two years, during which time he was a member of several important committees. In 1926 he was elected ward chairman, succeeding the late Coe E. Hawkins, a position

he held until his death. In May, 1929, he was appointed by the Common Council as member of the Board of Relief for a two years term beginning June 1, 1920 and was reappointed in 1931 and again this year. At the time of his death he was chairman of the board, beginning his third term on June 1. An active member of the Eighth Ward Republican Club, he held many offices in that organization. Last year he was a Republican candidate for the State Senate in the First District and conducted an active campaign. He was a member of the City Club, Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, the Rotary Club Hartford Lodge of Elks, Get-Together Club, Hartford Chamber of Commerce, Hartford Automobile Club and Men’s Club of the South Park Methodist Church. Mr. Bryne leaves four sons, Thomas L. and J. Frank Bryne of Hartford; William W. and Andrew M. Bryne of New York City; two daughters, Mrs. Anna L. Hedges and Miss May C. Bryne of New York City; four brothers, Willard W. B., and George M. Bryne of Boston; James J. America. The Cecelia BARRETT (1852–1905) who was the mother of Daniel Aloysius Dorey who married Estella Dora Bryne is believed to be Annie Barrett’s aunt; Cecelia (Barrett) Dorey’s parents were William Barrett and Annie Flaherty. This relationship has yet to be verified. Immigrated in 1870. I could not find her in the 1880 census. At that time there were 1,890 Barretts in MA, 440 born in Ireland. Lived in Somerville at the time of her marriage. A Catholic, was married in an Episcopal Church. The civil record gives her marriage date as 6-4-1885, her family bible as 6-6-1885. In 1892 lived in Somerville, MA at 27 Thurston with Edwin H. Barrett. In 1900 lived in Medford, MA at 26 Vernon Street as married woman (married 15 years) with children William W., John F., Annie L., Mary C., Andrew M. Had 6 children, 5 living [the dead child would have been Andrew Vincent]. In 1910 lived in Somerville, MA at 84 Wheatland Street with her children, a widow. In 1920 lived in Manhattan, NY on West 80th St., a widow, with daughter Anna. This was the Hotel Orleans. Did not believe or acknowledge that she was divorced. Died in the Orleans Hotel run by her daughter Anne Louise Bryne. Died of cancer. Anne Louise Bryne told Barbara (Robbins) Thorn that her mother’s father was one of the Barretts of Wimpole Street. John, a barrister, went to Ireland, married, had a family, and moved to the US. This story is contradicted by the

Son Thomas Lachlyn Bryne believed his mother to be related to Julia T. (Dorey) MULLINS, I proved this conclusively in 2016. He also said her father was a French cavalry officer. I verified the calvalry bit: Mansfield enlisted in the Massachusetts 3rd Calvalry on 11-16-1861; he was discharged with a disability (fractured right knee) on 9-16-1862 in New Orleans, LA. He served during the Civil War. 4-9-2016 discovered: Father: Alfred J. MULLINS who also used two other names: Mansfield A. Moullins and Mansfield A. Mouline. (It seems likely his middle name was Alfred.) Born Montreal, Quebec 7-12-1839. Died 2-10-1905 Gloucester, MA age 61. Mother: Julia Tryphina DOREY. Born 12-28-1838 Guysborough Intervale, Nova Scotia. Death unknown. Thus Andrew and Rose were first cousins. There is a family story that she attended school in CA, in particular Mills College in Oakland, CA on 1-12-1888 and that Asa HAMILTON, married to Eunice Lucretia Louisa Jane DOREY, paid her tuition. Leander Dorey was unable to confirm the attendance with the college. Her marriage license said she was age 32 of Boston, MA. She was married by a Justice of the Peace. In 1900 lived in Carbon County, WY with husband Andrew and son Thomas. She was born 11-1872 in MA to parents born MA. Andrew’s record said both his parents were born MA, which was in error since mother was born Canada. In 1910 lived in Boston, MA with husband, 2 children born, 1 living. She was age 37 born MA to parents born Canada. Andrew’s record correctly named the birth location of his parents. A horsewoman, she never recovered from a fall. She drowned herself. There is a dress of hers in a museum in Cheyenne, WY. Children: Thomas Lachlyn Bryne, b. 1900 Grand Encompment,

1.6.4 Anne Louise BRYNE (known as Dolly)

b. 11-28-1890 MA d. 3-28-1981 Silver Spring, MD

She was nicknamed Dolly as an infant by brother William, the name persisted throughout her life. In 1910 lived in Somerville, MA with mother and siblings; stenographer in jewelry store. In 1920 lived in Manhattan with mother; hotel manager. This was the Orleans Hotel at 100 West 80th Street at the corner of Columbus Avenue. It was built in 1898–1900 in the newly fashionable form of an apartment-hotel. It is the second oldest surviving tall building (10 stories) on the west side of Manhattan after the Dakota completed in 1884. The building is currently The Orleans, www.theorleansny.com . In 1930 lived in Manhattan on West 80th St. by herself, single; office secretary. In 1970 lived in Silver Spring, MD. She is listed on the Women’s Memorial outside the gates of Arlington National Cemetery in VA. Her death date is from her mother’s bible.

Children: Barbara Louise Robbins, b. 1919 NYC In 1900 lived in Medford, MA with mother and siblings. In 1910 lived in Somerville, MA with mother and siblings; bookkeeper in office. At time of marriage lived in Somerville at 27 Pennsylvania Avenue, age 21. Her mother’s family bible cited her marriage as 1-27-1914; the civil record says 4-15-1914. In 1930 lived in Queens, NY at 20-53 32nd Street with husband William (35) and daughter Barbara (10). Mary was 19 at first marriage, William 32. This suggests that Mary was his first wife, which contradicts other data I found. William immigrated in 1919, naturalized, and was an insurance salesman.

Olvier Kendall Pierce ROBBINS ? m. 4-15-1914 Mary Caroline BRYNE in Providence, RI div. d.

Mother: Clara M. PIERCE, b. 8-17-1859 Groton, MA, m. 5-13-1878 in Littleton. There is a question about his middle name: (a) The MA Archives indexed his birth record as Oliver Pierce Robbins, born Fitchburg to Edward F. Robbins and Clara M. Pierce. (b) The MA Archives indexed his marriage record as Oliver Kendall Robbins, age 24, born Fitchburg, parents Edward F. Robbins and Clara Pierce, occupation chauffeur. I’m inclined to think his full name was Oliver Kendall Pierce Robbins. In 1900 he lived in Fitchburg, MA at 111 Myrtle Avenue with parental family. Sibling: Grace A. Robbins b. 12-1878 MA; father was grocery clerk. His name cited as Oliver P. Robbins, born 1-1890. I could not find Oliver in the 1910 census. In 1914 at time of marriage he was 24 and lived in Somerville at 38 Wisconsin Avenue; a chaffeur. In 1917, per draft card, lived in Elmhurst, NY at 234 25th Street with wife; a salesman for American Chicle in NYC (his brother-in-law Andrew Montgomery Bryne also worked there). Service started 12-6-1917 NYC. At the beginning of WW I he attended Officer’s Training School in Plattsburg, NY and became a pilot. He fought in France and went to Mexico with General Pershing. In 1920 he lived in Kelly Field, Bexar, Texas as a Captain in the US Army; married. In 1918 and 1921 he was Second Lieut. In Air Service, National Army, reported to Chanute Field, Rantoul, IL.. I could not find Oliver in the 1930 census. In 1935 a man of this name lived Montgomery, AL. He died 12-15-1940 and is buried in Arlington National

Looking for Gladys in 1920, a 26-year old Gladys Shaw lived in Jacksonville, IL with husband A. W. and son Joseph (9/12 born Canada). She was born OH to parents born OH, husband born IL to mother born Canada. Interesting Canada connection. This was likely her first marriage. In 1930 she lived in Manhattan, NY at 138 West 77th Street married with two daughters Yvonne and Shirley; painting artist; married at age 20. Her husband was not present. [I first learned about Gladys in July 2009 when I was contacted by two of her descendants. According to the 1930 census she first married in 1914, it seems she must have had a marriage prior to Andrew. This suggests that Shaw was not her maiden name.]

In 1870 lived in Truro with parental family. In 1880 lived in Truro with parental family. In 1920 lived in Wellfleet, MA with sister Estella DOREY and her children Ruth, Daniel, Leander, Marian, and Estella; he was divorced per census. In 1950 lived in Cathedral City, CA at 911 Second Street. Died of lung cancer (“bronchogenic carcinoma’) of 1.5 years; had previously as a pedestrian been struck by a car. Cremated in Pomona, CA. I have several letters from a couple (Joseph G. and Blanche F. Brown) who were friends looking for a family member to pay the medical bills. He was a mine construction contractor. In MA had been a sea captain (mariner) and fisherman. I noted the following story about him in 1979 based on accounts of John Bryne, Marion Carlson, and David Dorey: Thomas was a sea captain from age 14 on. He was a very good sailor but a hard man. He raced another ship to Africa and won. He could sail the Atlantic coast by the seat of his pants, without charts or technological devices. His crews deserted him in port—once was enough. He shanghaied (kidnapped) Daniel Dorey (my uncle) for three years upon learning Dan had joined the revenuers (Coast Guard) and kept him sailing non-stop without pay. Bryne sailed a circular route: Boston, Cuba, Africa. He dealt in cotton and slaves [I doubt this bit about slavery as it was done then], among other things. He ended up with the Matson Lines in San Francisco. None of these stories have been corroborated.

1.10 George Milton BRYNE b. 4-8-1869 Truro, MA m. 11-22-1905 Blanche Louise BRUCE in Medford, MA d. 2-18-1963 Marblehead, MA, age 93 bur. Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Wellfleet, MA

Lived in Winchester, MA most of life. Owned over 100 acres and a “camp” near Wellfleet, MA. The Cape Cod National Seashore took much of the land. George sold the rest to a dentist named Alfie who had previously rented it. The camp was a small cabin where he entertained customers and politicians. The cabin had a wine cellar under a trap door in the floor. Owned a marine construction business. In 1951, at age 83, he raised the motorship Arizona Sword which on 5-7-1951 had collided with another ship in the Cape Cod Canal and sunk near the canal entrance, it was featured on the cover of Life magazine of June 16, 1952 (the article was titled “Octogenarian's Jackpot”), the issue is on Google Books; the owners and the insurance companies carrying the insurance on the vessel and cargo abandoned the motorship and cargo as a total loss. The Army Engineers concluded the sunken wreck constituted a menace to navigation and solicited bids to dismantle and remove it. George won the bid and contracted on 7-6-1951; he was paid $227,000 and given title to the ship and its contents. It took him to June 1952 to raise the ship, during which he spent much more than he had been paid. He worked with his sons on the project; George, 41, handled the paper work and planning while John, 34, was the project supervisor. He removed about 4,000 pounds of sulphur which he then tried to sell. (One account said he removed all 48,000 pounds by midsummer 1951. Other accounts give the quantity as 4,800 tons and 28,000 tons.) On 9-28-1951 he contracted to sell it for $60/ton and delivered about 618 tons under the contract. There began a legal dispute about whether or not the sulphur was under a price control under the Defense Production Act of 1950, George was sued by the US government. In 1955 the case

continued. George won the principle (that he owned the salvage), but lost $1 million. He then sold the boat back to its builder. (In 1961 the boat, owned by Texas Bulk Sulphur Company, sank off the coast of Palm Beach, Florida with a full cargo of sulphur, seven hands were lost, the cook escaped.) There is an article with photos on the Arizona Sword’s 1951 sinking from the National Archives at Boston on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.445820848784023.105923.126634757369302&type=3 There is a family story that he was involved in building the Cape Cod Canal walls and Boston’s Callahan Tunnel (opened November 11, 1961, the Sumner Tunnel had opened in 1934), but it is not yet substantiated. He built the Grand Island Bridge in Barnstable. Regarding the Callahan Tunnell, the Perini Corporation held the contract, Irving R. Huie led the construction. Perhaps George was a subcontractor. Deaf. Children: George Herrick Bryne, b. 1911 Stoneham, MA John Dewart Bryne, b. 1917 Winchester, MA In 1890 lived in Boston, MA; clerk. In 1905 he had an office in Boston at 7 Water room 408.
