TheSpanishsupercomputingcentrecontinuestoleadthewaytowardsusingARMprocessorsinHighPerformanceComputing.
Barcelona,12thJune2013BarcelonaSupercomputingCenter(BSC)willdeployitsnextprototypesystem,advancingtheroadmaptowardsthesuccessfulintroductionofARMprocessorsinHighPerformanceComputing.InJuly,BSCwillinstallthefirsthybridacceleratorclustercomposedofARMCortexA9,NVIDIATeslaK20GPUandMellanoxQDRInfiniBand.Co
fundedbythePartnershipforAdvancedComputinginEurope(PRACE)initiative,theclusterwillbenamedPedraforca[1]andwillbebuiltatBSCpremises.BSCandtheEuropeanHPCmanufacturerBullareinchargeoftheindustrialcoordinationandintegrationoftheproject,whiletheItalianE4ComputerEngineeringcompanyisprovidingthecomputingnodes.
PedraforcaenablestheuseofInfiniBandnetworksanddirectGPUtoGPUcommunicationthroughRDMAonARM.ItfeaturesalowpowerNVIDIATegra3(4coreCortexA9)toruntheoperatingsystemanddriveboththeTeslaK20acceleratorandtheQDRInfiniBandattheminimumpowerconsumption.
Thebenefitsofthisnewsysteminclude:
SuperiorenergyefficiencyforapplicationsthatrunalmostexclusivelyontheGPU,AhighbandwidthQDRInfiniBandwhichenablesremoteGPUoffloadingofhighlyparalleltasks,decouplingthehomogeneoushighperformanceclusterfromtheGPUaccelerators.
Prototypesarecriticaltoacceleratesoftwaredevelopment,bothsystemsoftwareandapplications.PedraforcaintroducesmultipleinnovationstotheARMsoftwarestack,leadingtoamoreenergyefficientplatformforthoseGPUcentricapplicationsthatmatchthecharacteristicsofthecluster.saysAlexRamirez,leaderoftheHeterogeneousArchitecturesResearchGroupatBSC.
BSCdeployedthefirstARMbasedmulticoreHPCclusterinOctober2011withaclustercalledTibidabo[2].InNovember2012,BSCcollaboratedwithNVIDIAandSECOinthedevelopmentoftheKAYLAdevelopmentplatform,thefirsthybridARM+CUDAGPUplatform,whichwasfieldtestedinthesecondBSCcluster.PedraforcarepresentsanotherstepforwardintheBSCresearchroadmaponnewtechnologiesandinnovativearchitecturestowardsenergyefficientHPC.
