Time to Bid GoodbyeApple posted record Apr-Jun sales due to price drop of iPhone XR

iPhone models will

selling price

The iPhone 6s currently sells forabout .̀ 29,500, while the iPhone SE,the earlier entry model, used to sellfor .̀ 21,000-22,000.

The four models are out of stockon Amazon India, while on Flip-kart, the iPhone SE and 6Plus areout of stock and not all variants ofthe other two models are available. All four models continue to be lis-ted as available in the US, accor-ding to Apple’s website.

The decision was taken after App-le improved its revenue and profitin India in 2018-19, even though iP-hone sales volumes took a hit, withthe focus more on pushing the la-test and higher-priced models.

An industry executive said App-le India’s sales in the April-Junequarter had gone up after it un-dertook a promotion to drop iPho-ne XR prices.

Apple is yet to file its India finan-

cials for FY19 with the Registrarof Companies. In FY18, Apple In-dia’s revenue increased 12% to.̀ 13,097 crore while net profit morethan doubled to .̀ 896 crore, as perRoC disclosures.

Cupertino, California-based App-le reduced the number of distribu-tors in India to two from five last ye-ar and decided to rein in arbitrarydiscounts to reinforce the brand’spremium.

“Cupertino does not want Apple In-dia to chase volumes by discountingat the cost of profit,” said one lea-

ding trade part-ner of Apple.

“These mo-dels which arebeing phasedout will increa-se the averageselling price ofiPhones inIndia and bo-ost both pro-fit andrevenue.”

Apple Indiadeclined to

comment on the matter.Apple used to assemble theiPhone SE in India alongwith the 6s and 7. The idle ca-pacity may now be used toexpand production of othermodels, one executive said.

UPBEAT ON INDIAN

MARKET

Another executi-ve said that App-

le has certainlynot given upon the poten-tial of the In-dian marketand willcontinue toroll out af-fordabili-ty pro-gram-mes like

buy-back and cashback offers. The company will localise its up-

coming iPhone operating systemiOS 13 for the first time for Indianconsumers, with support for 22 In-dian languages, maps for naviga-tion and virtual assistant Siri, which can now talk and under-stand Indian English.

“These initiatives highlight howApple still considers India an im-portant market for business. Justthat the priority has changed fromjust selling a box to improving ove-rall sales experience, brand posi-tioning and financials,” he said.

Analysts estimated that iPhoneshipments fell in India last yearand continue to plunge this year. The company, however, has expan-ded its iPhone assembling opera-tions in the country and soon plansto start offering the newer and su-per-premium models too.

Apple to pull out iPhone SE, 6, 6 Plus and 6s Plus from India; move part of strategy to focus on value sales rather than just volumes

[email protected]

Kolkata: Apple has taken four ofits ‘lower priced’ smartphones offthe shelves in India, making it mo-re expensive to buy an entry-leveliPhone.

As part of its new strategy to fo-cus on driving value in India inste-ad of chasing volumes, Apple hasstopped selling the iPhone SE, 6, 6Plus and 6s Plus, three senior in-dustry executives said. This willincrease the entry level price of aniPhone in India by almost .̀ 8,000.

The executives said supplies ofthese models stopped last month.Apple’s distributors and sales te-am have informed traders that thenew entry model will be the iPhone6s, as and when the existing stockof the earlier models get sold.

CCI Calls Hotels to Discuss FoodE-tail and What’s Eating Industry

[email protected]

New Delhi: The Competition Commis-sion of India (CCI) has called a meetingwith the National Restaurant Associa-tion of India (NRAI) and consultant EYto seek recommendations on an ecom-merce policy.

Amid growing friction between res-taurants and ecommerce platforms,CCI’s letter said, “The workshop willbring together all relevant stakehol-ders on a platform to discuss competi-tion-relevant issues in ecommercefrom different perspectives. The objec-tive is to understand issues and trendsin the context of growing ecommerceactivities.”

CCI’s move follows the Department forPromotion of Industry and InternalTrade (DPIIT) calling Swiggy, Zomato,Uber Eats and foodpanda for a meetingearlier this month to resolve concernsexpressed by restaurant companiesover “deep discounting” and “predato-ry pricing”.

“The objective is also to have sta-keholder recommendations onpolicy options that may ade-quately address these is-sues while safeguar-ding both freedomof trade and in-

novation incentives of online plat-forms,” said CCI.

The letter, a copy of which ET has se-en, schedules the meeting for August 30.

EY was mandated by CCI in May toconduct a market study on ecommerceevolution and issues in businesses, in-cluding the restaurant sector.

In January, some 500 small and mid-si-zed restaurants had alleged “misuse ofdominant position by food delivery com-panies including Swiggy, Zomato, UberEats and foodpanda.”

An online petition to CCI againstfood aggregators expressedconcern over deep discoun-ting, inhouse kitchensand internal sourcing.

The petition ur-ged CCI to “putan end tounsustai-

nable pricing, prohibition of cross-hol-dings of food services delivery compa-ny to own or have a stake in any kit-chen/restaurant and appointing foodregulators to ensure a level- playingfield is not breached in the garb ofcutthroat competition.”

Minister of commerce and industryPiyush Goyal earlier said violation ofPress Note 2, which barred ecommer-ce companies from offering discountsor influencing prices, would not be to-lerated. New FDI in ecommerce guide-lines seek to create a level-playing fi-eld for all online retailers and promo-te domestic sellers.

According to the draft nationalecommerce policy, ecommerce com-panies are prohibited from storingconsumer data with third-party enti-ties, even with consumer consent.

The India Food Services Report2019 estimates the food services sec-tor grew 11% in the last three years

and valued it at .̀ 4.2 lakh crore in2018-19.

It attributed growth to ur-banisation, rising income

levels and improved in-vestment climate,

and projected thesector will reach

.̀ 5.9 lakh croreby 2022-23.
